In eras when values were very different from today, Japan—and many other parts of the world—had customs that now sound almost impossible to believe. Some stories involve practices such as ottōi yomejo, which reportedly even led to court cases, or customs like ojiroku and obasa, said to have existed until around the Meiji period, as well as mukonage, or “groom throwing.”
Many of these chilling customs are associated with isolated rural communities. Among them are two especially disturbing terms: yobai and yotogi.
What Was Yobai?
When people hear the word yobai, they may imagine period dramas or old aristocratic love affairs. That image is not entirely wrong. But some accounts say a much darker form of yobai survived in certain regions until as late as the early Shōwa period.
In those places, yobai was said to have been treated as a kind of coming-of-age ritual.
In modern Japan, Coming of Age Day is associated with ceremonies, drinking, and celebration. This ritual was very different. It reportedly began after Matsunouchi, the New Year period when pine decorations are displayed, came to an end.
On that night, adult men would run toward the homes of adult women they were interested in. Then they would perform yobai—literally, a nighttime visit for sex.
If this had been based on mutual consent, it might be understood as an old-fashioned courtship custom. But the frightening part is that, according to these accounts, consent did not matter. The first man to reach the woman was called the “first spear,” the second the “second spear,” and so on. In modern terms, what is being described is sexual assault.
It reportedly did not matter whether the woman had a lover or someone she already liked. For that one night, she was expected to have sex with the men in the order they arrived. If the man she actually liked eventually reached her, the two might then begin a relationship with marriage in mind.
In other words, if the man she loved arrived first, she was lucky. If not, she had no choice but to wait until his turn came.
Some men were said to have thought, “Even if I can’t marry her, if I run there, I can at least sleep with her once.” Men who refused to take part—or who failed to sleep with anyone—were allegedly subjected to murabachibu, a form of village ostracism.
The horror here is not only the lack of sexual autonomy, but the fact that women were treated as objects of the custom and apparently could not refuse. When people hear “rural bride” in Japan, they may think of harsh treatment by in-laws. But this goes far beyond ordinary family bullying.
Imagine the despair of a woman whose own husband told her, “Go and entertain him properly.” Even more disturbing is the mindset of men raised in an environment where such treatment was considered normal.
What Was Yotogi?
The word yotogi has several meanings.
One meaning is to sleep beside the body of a deceased person, as close relatives might do before a funeral. Another is to stay up all night nursing someone who is ill. Neither of these meanings is frightening by itself.
But yotogi can also mean a woman spending the entire night attending to a man. In many cases, that meant sexual service.
In one rural Japanese village, yotogi was reportedly considered the highest form of hospitality for an important guest.
The story centers on a woman from the city who married into a very closed-off mountain village. There were very few young women there. A few months after her marriage, an important guest came to the house. He ate, drank, and because it had grown late, he stayed overnight.
Then the woman’s mother-in-law gave her an unbelievable order: perform yotogi.
In other words, she was told to go to the guest’s room in her underwear and have sex with him.
Even more shocking, her husband did not stop it. According to the story, he simply told her, “Go and entertain him properly.”
The guest was a stranger, old enough to be her father. Unable to endure the fear of being sent to his room, the woman pretended to obey, then escaped through the back door.
She fled along a mountain road and somehow managed to get away. Meanwhile, members of her husband’s family and nearby residents reportedly searched the area by car.
Although she escaped, a frightening number of documents later arrived at her family home. They allegedly stated that yotogi was a village custom—and that if she returned, she would have to apologize by performing yotogi for every man in the settlement.
The original account presents this as a true story, though the specific place is not named for privacy reasons. Whether treated as testimony, rumor, or local dark history, it is a deeply unsettling example of how the word “custom” can be used to pressure people into silence.
Do Yobai or Yotogi Still Exist Today?
Now that Japan has moved from the Heisei era into the Reiwa era, it is probably fair to say that almost no place openly preserves customs like yobai or yotogi.
But sexual matters are often hidden, in every era. It is possible that traces of old attitudes or local expectations may still survive quietly somewhere, even if not in an open or formal way.
For travelers and horror fans, stories like these should be approached as dark folklore and social history—not as attractions to seek out. Do not trespass, harass residents, or try to identify private communities connected to rumors. These stories involve real harm, and the safest, most respectful way to engage with them is through reading, research, and historical context.
The Fear Behind “Tradition”
This article looked at disturbing stories connected to sex, marriage, and rural customs. Ideas about chastity and relationships were very different in the past, but even with that in mind, these accounts are horrifying.
Imagine the night after Matsunouchi ends, when men from all around the village come running toward your home. For women considered beautiful, it must have been an especially terrifying night.
Yobai also has a long shadow in Japanese culture. In The Tale of Genji, one of Japan’s most famous Heian-period works, the protagonist visits many women at night. Depending on the time and social class, forms of nighttime courtship may have existed in various ways.
Still, it is hard not to be shocked by accounts that say customs like these were treated as “normal” in some regions even in relatively recent times.
In communities where harmful traditions remain, there may be an unspoken rule: “We went through it too, so you must as well.” Anyone who refuses can be punished through ostracism, discrimination, or social isolation.
That is what makes the word “custom” so frightening. Sometimes the scariest thing in a village is not a ghost, but a rule everyone is expected to obey.
