Do you like haunted places? In Japan, many famous ghost spots are deep in the mountains, inside abandoned tunnels, or in deserted ruins and empty villages far from the city. Many are dangerous, off-limits, or on private property.
But in the middle of Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward, there is a well-known haunted spot with constant traffic and pedestrians: Sendagaya Tunnel. It is said to have been built beneath a cemetery, and because so many people pass through it, many strange experiences have been reported over the years.
A haunted tunnel in central Tokyo
Sendagaya Tunnel is located near the Senjuin intersection, about a 12-minute walk from JR Sendagaya Station. It was built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, but at some point it became known as a place where ghosts are said to appear.
Tunnels often feel eerie by nature, which makes them easy candidates for ghost stories. In the case of Sendagaya Tunnel, however, there is a specific reason behind its reputation.
Above the tunnel is the cemetery of a temple called Senjuin. According to the story, the tunnel was built in a hurry for the Tokyo Olympics, and there was not enough time to relocate the graves. As a result, the tunnel ended up passing beneath the cemetery.
For many people, the idea of building a road under graves feels deeply disrespectful. Some say the spirits of the ancestors buried above may have been angered. Even today, cars pass through the tunnel every day, so the dead who were meant to rest in peace may, at least in rumor, still be unable to sleep.
The inside of the tunnel is also marked by a large amount of graffiti, which adds to its unsettling atmosphere.
Reported ghost stories and strange phenomena
If you visit Sendagaya Tunnel, the interior is dimly lit by hazy orange lights. During the day, there is plenty of foot and vehicle traffic. At night, however, the area becomes much quieter, and people often describe the tunnel as unusually cold.
That chill may be part of what gives visitors a bad feeling. Some say they sense someone watching them, even when no one appears to be there.
Over the years, the following stories have been told about Sendagaya Tunnel:
- A woman with disheveled hair appears in a car’s rearview mirror while passing through the tunnel.
- Handprints appear on a windshield.
- The ghost of a woman with a child crosses in front of a car.
- A hand reaches out from the wall and grabs a pedestrian.
- A blood-covered woman chases someone through the tunnel.
- The spirit of a long-haired woman appears from above.
- Strange noise is recorded at a nearby recording studio.
As with many urban legends, these accounts are rumors and personal stories rather than confirmed events. Still, they have helped make Sendagaya Tunnel one of Tokyo’s most talked-about haunted locations.
Location and access
Sendagaya Tunnel is in Sendagaya 2-chome, Shibuya Ward, Tokyo. It is easy to reach by public transportation: about a 10-minute walk from Kokuritsu-Kyogijo Station on the Toei Oedo Line, or about a 12-minute walk from Sendagaya Station on the JR Chuo-Sobu Line.
Because it is close to central Tokyo and surrounded by busy streets, you might never guess it has a haunted reputation unless someone told you. Nearby landmarks include Jingu Stadium and the Japan National Stadium, and with a bit more walking you can reach areas such as Harajuku and Yoyogi Park.
Despite its haunted reputation, Sendagaya Tunnel is a normal urban tunnel with heavy daytime traffic. Since it is part of the city’s road network, many people pass through simply because they need to. At night, however, the area becomes much less crowded, which may be why those who know the stories tend to avoid it when they can.
Sendagaya Tunnel has been known as a haunted spot for decades, and because it is now so accessible, it is one of the easier ghost-story locations to visit in Japan.
If you go, remember that this is a real public road in a residential and urban area. Do not stop in the roadway, block traffic, enter restricted areas, disturb the temple or cemetery, or bother local residents. Visit safely, stay aware of cars and bicycles, and treat the area with respect.
A rare haunted spot in the heart of the city
Many haunted places are remote, unsafe, abandoned, or located on private property. Some have a risk of injury, trespassing issues, or groups hanging around at night.
Compared with those places, Sendagaya Tunnel is unusual: famous, easy to access, and located in the middle of Tokyo. That makes it a popular subject for fans of urban legends and haunted travel stories.
Even so, as with any haunted location, visit at your own discretion and use common sense.

心霊スポットやいわくつきの場所というのは、 山の中 や 廃トンネル といった都会から離れた場所や、 廃墟 や 廃集落 といった人がいない場所がほとんどです。怪我 をしやすかったり、 不良のたまり場 になっているところも多く、 私有地 で 立ち入り禁止 になっているところも多いですよね。その点、 千駄ヶ谷トンネルは有名でありながら手軽に探訪ができる心霊スポットなので、心霊スポットマニアにオススメです。。ただし、もちろん 自己責任 で……ですが。
