Across Japan, many places are known as haunted spots, with stories ranging from local rumors to accounts people insist are true. Hospitals are especially common settings for these legends, whether they are still in operation or have fallen into ruin.
Tochigi Prefecture has several places with frightening reputations, but the former Old Nogi Hospital site in Sagawa-no, Nogi Town, Shimotsuga District is often named as one of the prefecture’s most famous haunted locations. Some locals even rank it above Kegon Falls, a well-known sightseeing spot that also has its own darker reputation. For many people living in Tochigi, the name is familiar.
Location and access
The site is in a town area rather than a city, so it can be a little difficult to find. According to local accounts, the ruins are reached by heading south along Heisei-dori on National Route 314. Cars cannot go all the way to the hospital site, and visitors would have to continue on foot from partway in.
The approach is said to pass a stretch of mixed woodland, with a single path leading through it. After walking for a while, the trees open up and the hospital building appears ahead. People who have seen it describe the first view of the ruins as deeply unsettling.

Two major rumors about the building
The area around the old site is described as a bleak open lot with weeds growing around it. Two main rumors have spread about the building.
The first is that it was once a psychiatric hospital. In Japanese ghost stories, former mental hospitals often become the setting for disturbing legends, and Old Nogi Hospital is one example of that pattern.
The second rumor is that the building was never completed because construction was stopped partway through. Across Japan, there are buildings that were abandoned during construction for one reason or another, and many people believe this is what happened here.
Of the two theories, the unfinished-construction story is often treated as the more likely one. The building reportedly has no sign with a hospital name and does not look as if it was ever open for business. The concrete walls are exposed, and there are said to be no clear traces of painted interior walls. In other words, the so-called Old Nogi Hospital may have been a half-finished hospital that was simply left behind.
There is also an important point of confusion: Nogi Hospital in Tomonuma, Nogi Town, Shimotsuga District, Tochigi, is reportedly unrelated to the haunted-site rumors and is still in operation. Some people from outside the prefecture have apparently mistaken the active hospital for the haunted location, walking around it late at night or taking photos after hours. This has caused trouble for staff. The rumored haunted site is the former hospital site in Sagawa-no, not the operating hospital.
Rumors that have circulated for more than 20 years
Old Nogi Hospital has been talked about as a haunted place in Tochigi for more than two decades. Those who have gone inside describe an atmosphere that feels exactly like a classic haunted ruin. In summer, it is said that some local young people would suggest going there as a test of courage.
One rumor connected to the former-psychiatric-hospital story claims that patients were abused by nurses and the hospital director. One version says a violent male patient was tied to a bed and left without food for a week. According to the story, he screamed as if he had lost his mind and died a week later. When his parents came to the hospital after learning of his death, the rumor claims they smiled instead of grieving.
Another rumor says that patients with mental illness were used for human experiments. In this version, severely ill patients were taken to a laboratory and injected with new drugs to test their effects. One patient allegedly began suffering immediately after an injection, foamed and bled from the mouth, and died. Another particularly lurid version claims that a female patient was subjected to invasive abuse by a doctor.
These are only rumors, and the article presents them as part of the site’s frightening folklore rather than confirmed history. Still, stories like these have helped shape the image of Old Nogi Hospital as a place more like a torture hospital than a normal medical facility.
The mother and son story
Another story told about Old Nogi Hospital feels more detailed and, for that reason, has frightened many people who hear it.
According to this rumor, when the hospital was still believed to exist, a mother brought her teenage son there for treatment because his behavior had become strange and she was worried about him. After examining him, the hospital director allegedly said he needed to be hospitalized immediately.
The story continues that the son was bullied every day by the director and nursing staff. About one month after being admitted, he and his mother are said to have jumped from the roof of Old Nogi Hospital together.
Because the building was not especially tall, the rumor says the mother and son were still alive immediately after the fall and might have been saved. However, the hospital allegedly left them untreated, and both died. Stories of abuse inside the hospital and the tragic deaths of the parent and child are part of why the ruins became known outside Tochigi as well.
Apparitions, voices, and strange photos
Today, the former hospital site is described as an abandoned ruin: dark at night, dirty inside, and covered with graffiti left by young visitors. For people seeking a haunted atmosphere, it reportedly has a strong impact.
Some who went there for a test of courage claim to have experienced strange phenomena.
In one account, a group of five young people drove to the Old Nogi Hospital site at night. They entered nervously and moved deeper into the building, feeling their way through the darkness without proper lights. As they passed in front of one room, one of them suddenly cried out and told the others, “I just saw a woman inside.”
The figure was said to look like a woman in her 40s, wearing something like a white hospital gown. The group wanted to leave immediately, but since they had come all the way to one of Tochigi’s famous haunted places, they continued up the stairs despite their fear.
As they walked, one man tried to light a cigarette, but his lighter would not catch no matter how many times he tried. The group, now badly shaken, continued toward the top floor and tried to make their way out. Then another member reportedly saw the same woman, and the group fled the building.
Rumors of a female ghost at Old Nogi Hospital are fairly widespread. There are also stories of strange voices. In one account, a group exploring the site heard a faint scream that sounded like a woman crying out, as if she were being attacked or blamed. Several people in the group reportedly heard it.
Another visitor is said to have brought a camera hoping to capture a spirit photograph. After taking around 20 pictures, they noticed white streaks in about 10 of them. In other photos, they believed they could see something resembling a human face.
Tochigi has several haunted locations, but Old Nogi Hospital has a reputation that sets it apart. Whether it was truly a psychiatric hospital or simply an abandoned construction project, the building remains one of the prefecture’s most talked-about haunted ruins. For safety and legal reasons, it is best treated as a place of folklore to read about rather than a site to enter.

女性の服装は、白い入院服のようで年齢は４０代ぐらいだった そうです。５人の若者は、この栃木県の心霊スポットから早く出たい気持ちが生まれます。しかし、５人グループは、せっかく来た栃木県の心霊スポットなので怖がりながらも階段を登って行ったそうです。歩いている途中、１人の男性がタバコを吸おうとライターを付けようとします。しかし、ライターの火は、一向に付かずタバコは吸えません。ゾッとした若者グループは、なんとか最上階まで登って行き外へ出ようと歩きます。
しかし、また、１人が、女性の姿を見て慌てて旧野木病院跡から外へ出たそうです。栃木県の心霊スポットとして、女性の霊が出る噂は意外と広がっています。さらに、 旧野木病院跡には、不思議な声が聞こえる噂 も聞かれています。ある若者たちが、栃木県の心霊スポット野木病院跡へ遊びに行き体験した話です。中に入り、探索していると、「キャー」と、女性の悲鳴のような声が小さく聞こえてきました。何か、誰かに責められているような悲鳴声で数人が聞いたそうです。栃木県の心霊スポットとして、旧野木病院跡は怖い噂は絶えません。
