Among the ancient ruins left behind by civilizations around the world, researchers sometimes discover objects that seem difficult to explain in their historical context. These mysterious items are often called “out-of-place artifacts,” or OOPArts: objects that appear to be out of step with the time or place where they were found.
In many cases, these alleged OOPArts are discussed because of the “technology” they seem to imply, or because their origin is unclear. Researchers and enthusiasts often begin with the object itself and then try to investigate the background behind it. But in some ruins, the mystery is slightly different: the evidence seems to suggest that something happened, yet no firm proof can be obtained.
Separate from OOPArts, myths from many parts of the world also share certain recurring themes. We will look at the details in future entries, but in broad terms, myths from ancient times to the present often contain descriptions that can be interpreted as “great disasters,” “the destruction of humanity,” or even the idea that humankind may once have been wiped out.
How the Ancient Nuclear War Theory Took Shape
The usual view of human history is based on the idea of the world’s four great ancient civilizations: Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and the Yellow River civilization. These are often taught in school as the first major civilizations in human history.
However, the concept of the “four great civilizations” itself was proposed in the 20th century. It is not an idea that comes directly from extremely ancient texts.
The ancient nuclear war theory takes a very different view. According to this theory, a “super-civilization” existed before recorded history, and most of humanity was once destroyed in a nuclear war.
Why would anyone propose such a theory? That is where the subject becomes especially strange. Supporters of the ancient nuclear war theory point to alleged OOPArts, ruins around the world, and ancient myths as traces that seem to hint at something lost. In other words, when certain physical clues and interpretations are considered together, some people arrive at the idea that a nuclear war may have occurred in the ancient past.
Discussion of this theory became especially active in relatively recent history. It is said to have drawn the most attention during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.
That makes sense in its own way. The Cold War was a time when the threat of global nuclear war felt very real. Because people were living under that shadow, the idea that a nuclear catastrophe might have happened once before may have captured the public imagination even more strongly.
A Theory That Still Attracts Attention
Of course, no hypothesis like this can be proven simply through debate. Modern history generally assumes that present-day civilization, especially in science and technology, represents the most advanced stage humanity has reached.
At the same time, the truth is that much of human history remains unresolved. If every part of the current understanding of human history—including the four-civilization model and evolutionary theory—were completely settled, then objects described as OOPArts should not appear in ancient ruins at all.
And yet, objects have been found that, at least according to some interpretations, seem out of place for their time or location. When ancient texts and myths that appear to support these interpretations are added to the discussion, supporters argue that the ancient nuclear war theory cannot be dismissed as pure nonsense.
In this series, we will introduce traces, myths, and stories that are often cited as if they support the idea of an ancient nuclear war. How you interpret these claims is up to you. But by looking at the possibility—however uncertain—that such a war might once have occurred, you may find yourself seeing history, ruins, and old legends from a different angle.
Arguments Against the Theory
Before going further, it is also important to introduce some skeptical views.
Many people who reject the ancient nuclear war theory argue that if a full-scale nuclear war had occurred, a “nuclear winter” would have followed, and humanity would have died out completely. Certainly, if the nuclear weapons held by modern nations were ever detonated on a large scale, it is often said that human civilization, and possibly humanity itself, would face near-certain destruction.
However, it should also be noted that many versions of the ancient nuclear war theory claim that the pre-ancient “super-civilization” responsible for such a war possessed technology even more advanced than our own today.

世界各地に残された古代文明と呼ばれる古い遺跡の中には、時々現代の研究者が首をかしげるようなものが発見されることがあります。こういった謎の物体は「out-of-place artifacts」（時代や場所にそぐわない物の意）と呼ばれ、それらの頭文字を取って日本ではオーパーツと呼ばれます。一般的なオーパーツのほとんどは、その時代には見合っていないとされる「技術」であったり、「出どころの不明なもの」であったりと原因自体がオーパーツにあり、そこから背景を研究されることが多いですが、一部の遺跡からは「何があったかは予測出来るものの、確証が得られない」という物が発見される例もあります。
またオーパーツとは全く無関係ですが、世界各地に残る神話にはある種共通している部分があります。詳細なポイントは今後紹していこうと思いますが、結論から言えば、古代から現代に至るまでの神話の中には、「大きな災害」「人類の破滅」といった我々人類が一度は滅んでいるような解釈が出来るような記述などが残されています。古代核戦争説の成り立ちとは。もともと、人類の軌跡とは世界四大文明と呼ばれる歴史観に基づいています。人類史上、もっとも最初に起こった大きな文明が「エジプト文明」「メソポタミア文明」「インダス文明」「黄河文明」の4つだと言われており、これらの始まりについては教科書などで習うことだと思いますが、実はこの四大文明が唱えられたのは20世紀であり、そこまで古い文献などに基づいたものではありません。
一方でこの四大文明は有史以前に「超文明」が存在しており、一度人類は核戦争によってそのほとんどが死んでしまったという説です。何故このような説が唱えられるのか？というところが古代核戦争説の面白いポイントなのですが、この古代核戦争説は先に述べたオーパーツや各地の遺跡、そして神話などにその片鱗を残しているのです。つまり、状況証拠としていくつかの物証や検証をすると古代に核戦争があったのではないか？という結論にたどり着くということになります。特に議論が活発なったのも近年のことであり、米ソの冷戦時代が最も盛んだったと言われています。
冷戦時代となれば、実際に世界規模での核戦争の危機があった時代ですから、余計に人々の関心を引いたのかもしれません。古代核戦争説は今も無視出来ない論説の1つ。もちろん、議論一つでこういった仮説を断定することは出来ませんし、近代以降の人類史では今、現在が科学を始めとした文明の最先端であることが前提となっています。ただし、人類の歴史というのは実際のところは解明されていないのです。人類史が本当に現在提唱されている四大文明や進化論を含めて全てが正しいのであれば、過去の遺跡などからオーパーツなどと呼ばれる物体は”出てきてはいけない”はずなんです。
しかし、実際には現在の科学ではその時代や場所にそぐわないとしか判断出来ないものが発見されています。さらにそれらを裏付けるかのような古代の文献などを加えて判断するならば、古代の核戦争説はまんざらデタラメでもないということになります。この記事では、そんな古代の核戦争説を裏付けるかのような数々の痕跡や神話などについて紹介していきます。もちろん、こういった説の解釈、受け取り方はこれを読んだ人次第ですが、ひょっとしたらあったかも知れない古代の核戦争について触れることによって、新しい考え方が出来たり、物の見方が変わるかもしれません。
最初に否定する側としての意見もいくつか紹介しておきますが、古代の核戦争説などは完全になかったと主張する人々の多くは「全面核戦争が起こった場合には核の冬によって人類は死滅する」という根拠にもとづいています。確かに、現代の各国が保有している核が仮に爆発した場合にはほぼ確実に人類は滅亡すると言われています。しかし、「超文明」と呼ばれる核戦争を起こしたとされる古代以前の文明は、現代よりも発達したテクノロジーを持っていたとする説の方が多いということも付け加えておきます
