This is an account said to have come from a real phone fortune-telling session in Japan. Phone readings are a popular style of consultation where a client speaks directly with a fortune-teller or spiritual adviser. In this story, however, the session took a frightening turn when an angry ancestor allegedly came through the client herself.

What is phone fortune-telling in Japan?

Before getting into the story, here is a quick explanation for anyone unfamiliar with the service.

Phone fortune-telling is exactly what it sounds like: a client calls a fortune-teller and receives a reading or consultation over the phone. Many readers belong to fortune-telling companies, and the client connects with them through that service.

Hours vary depending on the company, but many accept consultations late at night. That is part of the appeal: when someone feels they need advice immediately, they can speak with a professional reader without leaving home.

Each fortune-teller has different specialties. Some use tarot cards, some claim spiritual sensitivity, and others focus more on counseling-style advice. That means people sometimes call not only about love and relationships, but also about things like feeling haunted, sensing a spirit nearby, or experiencing strange phenomena at home.

The woman who called about a haunting

Love problems are said to be the most common reason people call. But every now and then, a client is dealing with something much darker.

The woman in this account will be called Mrs. Inoue, a pseudonym. She was in her 40s, lived in the Kanto region, and shared a home with her salaryman husband and their two children. By all accounts, she was a gentle, soft-spoken wife and mother.

She had always liked fortune-telling and charms, and she was interested in ghost stories and supernatural topics. But until then, she had never personally experienced anything paranormal.

One night, her husband was away on a business trip. Her two children were also late coming home because of club activities and part-time work. While she was alone in the house, she suddenly felt as if the entire building had started rattling.

At first, she thought it might be the wind. She opened a window, but there was nothing strong enough to shake a house.

Then she wondered if it had been an earthquake. She checked the news, but there were no reports of one.

Still uneasy, she messaged a neighbor she was friendly with and asked if anything strange had happened nearby. The reply came back: no, nothing at all.

From that day on, the same thing happened at the same time every night. At 8 p.m., the house would rattle.

Thinking something was wrong, Mrs. Inoue asked her husband and children to be home at that time. But the rest of the family felt nothing.

Then the disturbances escalated. There were knocking and cracking sounds inside the house. The television turned on by itself. When she was in the bath, something pounded on the outside wall.

She tried to tell herself it was only her imagination. But she could not believe that was all it was. Eventually she became unable to sleep at night and sat alone in the living room.

That was when she flipped through a magazine feature on fortune-telling and found an advertisement for a reader who specialized in psychic phenomena. She decided to request a phone reading.

The reading that became a possession

While waiting for her appointment time, Mrs. Inoue began to feel sick, as if she might vomit. She managed to endure it until the scheduled call, but by the time the reading began, her body felt as heavy as stone. She could not move from the sofa.

Lying down, she started the call with the fortune-teller.

The moment the session began, she was struck by intense nausea and exhaustion. Then she lost consciousness.

According to the account, for about five minutes while she was unconscious, the spirit of an ancestor came through her.

In a deep, low, masculine voice completely unlike Mrs. Inoue’s usual gentle way of speaking, the spirit angrily told the fortune-teller to pass on a message:

“The grave is filthy, and water has collected inside it. No one comes to clean it. No one manages it. We have become a laughingstock. I devoted my life to this family. At least keep the grave clean.”

Then the voice changed into that of a woman.

“There is a memorial tablet forgotten in my grandmother’s house, where no one lives anymore…”

At that point, the fortune-teller had little choice but to listen over the phone and promise to deliver every demand, hoping the ancestors would return Mrs. Inoue’s body to her quickly.

Once the promise was made, Mrs. Inoue came back to herself.

Panicked, she asked, “Did I say anything rude to you?”

She had no memory of the conversation. While unconscious, she said, she had only dreamed that she was shouting at someone.

The fortune-teller repeated the ancestors’ message exactly as it had been spoken. Mrs. Inoue said both parts sounded familiar.

The very next day, she went to the family grave and to her grandmother’s now-empty house. Sure enough, the grave had been neglected and water had collected inside it. In the deserted house, she found a memorial tablet that had fallen behind a closet.

She cleaned the grave, took the memorial tablet home, and contacted her older brother, who had been responsible for managing both the grave and the house. She had believed he was divorced and living alone. Instead, she learned that he had remarried without telling her and moved to another prefecture.

After the grave was cleaned

Mrs. Inoue acted immediately after the phone reading. After that, the frightening phenomena that had troubled her so much stopped completely. The rattling, the noises, the television turning on by itself—everything went quiet.

Later, after the grave and memorial tablet were properly cared for and offerings were made, something unexpected happened. Her husband won a large long-odds horse-racing payout. Then their eldest son was accepted into a difficult university.

According to the story, after the family began looking after the ancestors properly, good things started happening one after another.

A reminder about graves and ancestors

This was supposed to be an ordinary phone fortune-telling session, but it allegedly turned into a sudden spirit possession. Even if the strange events were a message from her own ancestors, spending night after night alone with those disturbances must have been terrifying.

In Japan, visiting and maintaining family graves is an important act of respect. Whether you take this story as a supernatural warning, a coincidence, or a modern ghost tale, it reflects a very real cultural belief: the dead should not be forgotten.

If you visit cemeteries or memorial sites in Japan, do so respectfully, during appropriate hours, and only in places where visitors are allowed. For families, this story offers a simple reminder: clean the grave, honor the ancestors, and say thank you—before they decide to send a more dramatic sign.
