Have you ever heard of the “Blue Whale” game? Originating in Russia, it became known around the world as an online “suicide game.” This article looks back at the history of Blue Whale, the panic surrounding it, and what eventually happened.
A Deadly Game Said to Have Started in Russia
Blue Whale is believed to have appeared in Russia sometime between 2013 and 2015. The basic structure was simple: through social media, a so-called game master would give participants tasks to complete over a period of 50 days.
At first, the tasks were reportedly easy. Over time, however, they became more dangerous. According to reports, the final task was suicide.
That may sound too extreme to be real. However, a number of deaths among young people were reported as being connected to Blue Whale, and the story spread rapidly across the world.
How People Joined Blue Whale
Blue Whale was associated with VK.com, a Russian social networking service. It was not something a person could simply download to a smartphone like an ordinary app. Reports said that users had to access certain links or communities within VK.
Even so, young people in Russia and other countries were said to have joined or attempted to join the game.
What the Tasks Were Like
The tasks in Blue Whale reportedly began with simple instructions, such as watching a horror movie at a specific time. Later tasks allegedly escalated into self-harm and other dangerous behavior.
By that point, many people would naturally hesitate. But some participants reportedly carried out these harmful tasks anyway.
Why Did People Get Pulled In?
From the outside, Blue Whale seems obviously dangerous. It is hard to understand why anyone would become deeply involved. But some participants were reportedly struggling with mental health problems, including depression. Critics have suggested that the game may have worsened the mental state of already vulnerable young people.
There were also reports of threats sent to people who tried to quit, including messages claiming that their lives were being watched. If participants believed those threats, leaving may have felt impossible.
Another possible factor is a sense of belonging. Around eight suicide-related Blue Whale communities were reportedly found on VK.com. For someone inside such a group, quitting may have felt like betraying the others.
Did Blue Whale Really Cause 130 Deaths?
In 2016, a Russian tabloid reported that 130 people had died by suicide because of Blue Whale between November 2015 and April 2016.
That number has been widely questioned. The direct connection between Blue Whale and many of those deaths was unclear. Still, suicides allegedly linked to the game were reported in multiple countries, making Blue Whale a major social concern.
The Alleged Mastermind Who Wanted to “Cleanse” Society
In 2017, Philipp Budeikin, one of the alleged masterminds behind Blue Whale, was arrested in Russia. He had reportedly studied psychology, and it is believed that he used that knowledge to build the system behind the game beginning around 2012.
He showed no remorse toward the victims. According to reports, he claimed that he had merely “cleansed” society of people he considered worthless.
Even more disturbingly, he later received numerous love letters from members of the suicide communities connected to him.
The Game Did Not End With His Arrest
Although Budeikin was arrested, Blue Whale did not immediately disappear. Reports of suicides allegedly connected to the game continued, not only in Russia but also in countries such as China and India.
Governments and social media companies responded by shutting down communities and warning the public. Over time, the panic began to fade. Today, reported deaths connected to Blue Whale have become rare, and the issue is generally considered to have largely subsided.
Did Blue Whale Return in 2018?
After Blue Whale faded from the headlines, another supposed suicide game became a global topic in 2018: the “Momo Challenge.” Like Blue Whale, it was said to start with simple tasks before escalating until participants were pushed toward suicide.
Reports of deaths allegedly connected to the Momo Challenge appeared around the world. These stories often shared one detail: the icon of a woman with bulging eyes and a wide, unsettling mouth.
However, in 2019, the Momo Challenge was widely identified as a hoax. The image used as the icon came from an artwork created by a Japanese special effects artist. No clear connection was found between the Momo Challenge and the suicides said to be linked to it.
In other words, the supposed Momo-related suicides were spread online as misleading rumors or outright misinformation. Some experts have suggested that, as children increasingly use social media and video platforms, worried parents may have amplified the hoax by reacting too strongly to frightening but unverified claims.
Final Thoughts
Blue Whale became infamous as a terrifying online game that caused fear around the world. Although the panic has mostly died down, similar rumors and malicious online trends can still appear.
When using social media, especially around disturbing horror content or urban legends, be careful with misinformation, harmful communities, and anything that encourages self-harm. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or struggling with suicidal thoughts, contact local emergency services or a crisis support line right away.
