Have you heard of hwa-byung, sometimes translated as “fire illness” or “anger illness”? In Japanese it is often read as hibyo or fabyon. It is usually discussed as a culture-bound syndrome: a pattern of mental and physical distress that appears especially often within a particular cultural area, region, or ethnic group.
Culture-bound syndromes are found around the world, but this article focuses on hwa-byung, a condition often associated with Korean culture. It has been described as a form of mental illness or distress that appears notably among Koreans.
What are the symptoms of hwa-byung?
In the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, hwa-byung has been described in an appendix on cultural concepts and culture-related syndromes as a Korean anger syndrome involving a combination of anxiety, depression, and physical symptoms.
The image often used to explain it is vivid: anger rising in the stomach like a ball of fire. It may be accompanied by physical sensations such as abdominal pain, palpitations, or shortness of breath.
The cause is generally said to be the long-term suppression of anger. Resentment, frustration, and grief are held down for too long, until they surge up all at once. In that sense, hwa-byung is not treated as ordinary anger. It is closer to suddenly “snapping,” when buried emotions erupt in a frightening way.
Some people point to dramatic footage of Koreans crying, shouting, or expressing rage and wonder whether hwa-byung might be involved. That kind of speculation should be handled carefully: a video clip is not a diagnosis, and emotional expression differs from person to person. Still, in popular discussions, hwa-byung is often used to explain anger that appears unusually intense.
One quoted Japanese source, referring to an article about a rapid increase in hwa-byung among Korean office workers, claims that 90.18% of Koreans have experienced it. Figures like this should be read cautiously unless the original survey method is clear.
Are most Koreans affected?
Because hwa-byung is discussed as a culture-bound syndrome, some sources claim it is extremely common in Korea. The article cited above says that about 90% of men have experienced it, while another common claim is that roughly 80% of hwa-byung patients are women.
One explanation offered is cultural pressure. Korea has a long history of patriarchal social structures, and women may have been placed in situations where they were expected to endure anger rather than express it. Another explanation is that Korean society places strong value on harmony with others, which may make people more likely to suppress resentment regardless of gender.
Suppressed emotion exists in many countries, of course. So why is hwa-byung so strongly associated with Korea? This is where the article moves from medical explanation into a darker, more speculative rumor.
A rumor about genes
Some online discussions claim that hwa-byung may not be caused only by environment, but may also be connected to genetics. These claims argue that Korean DNA has unusual characteristics and that this might somehow relate to the condition.
The source article refers to a 2014 mention of genetic distinctiveness, as well as genetic-gradient research associated with anthropologist Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza. It then connects those ideas to speculation about genetic drift and old marriage customs, including rumors involving close-relative relationships in the Joseon period.
This part should be treated as rumor, not established science. Genetic studies do not prove that an entire people is destined to behave a certain way, and they should not be used to stigmatize Koreans or any other group. Hwa-byung is best understood as a cultural and psychological concept, not as proof of some frightening national “curse.”
Still, from a horror perspective, the idea is unsettling: what if rage were not only emotional, but something written deep inside the body? What if invisible information—genes, memory, culture, silence—could press on the mind until it cracked?
That is the eerie image behind hwa-byung: a fire that cannot be seen from the outside, burning for years in the stomach and chest, waiting for the moment it finally erupts.
If you encounter someone in emotional distress while traveling, do not mock, provoke, or film them for entertainment. Keep distance, stay safe, and seek local help if necessary.

kakikomi 。 The Great Human Diasporas: The History of Diversity and Evolution.1995.. 。
