English Version
For this New Year travel story, I want to write about Kuki Yoshitaka’s head mound on Toshi Island in Mie Prefecture.
For some reason, when I take photos, strange things tend to show up in them. So this time, I’m writing from my own experience: a year-end and New Year trip I took when I was in university.
There are two things I want to get across in this article.
First, don’t mess around at places like this just for fun.
Second, don’t casually take photos at places like this.
If you visit real memorial sites, graves, temples, or shrines in Japan, please be respectful, stay on public paths, follow local rules, and never climb on or sit on monuments.
Kuki Yoshitaka’s Head Mound on Toshi Island
Kuki Yoshitaka was a warlord from Japan’s Sengoku period. He served under Oda Nobunaga and is often described as a naval commander or “pirate daimyo.” His base was around Ise-Shima and Toba, and he was something like the boss of the pirates in that region.
The reason his head mound is on Toshi Island in Mie is connected to the Battle of Sekigahara. Yoshitaka sided with the Western Army, lost, and is said to have taken his own life on Toshi Island, where he was buried.
Since this is an occult story, I’ll skip most of the historical details. But one important part is that the person who faced Yoshitaka on the Eastern Army side was his own son, Moritaka.
If I ever write a more history-focused article, I may go deeper into that.
A New Year Trip to Toshi Island
Now, to the main story.
This happened when I was a first-year university student. A friend who had gone to a university in Tokyo and another friend who had gone to a university in Kyoto invited me to go somewhere over the New Year holiday.
At the time, I didn’t have a part-time job, and I wasn’t dating anyone, so I had no plans. I figured I would just spend New Year’s sleeping at home anyway, so I decided to go.
Both of them had been my friends since elementary school, so I knew them well. But there was one thing that worried me.
My friend in Kyoto was the kind of friend I would call a best friend. She knew about my “photos with things in them” problem. She had actually seen those photos many times, including pictures we had taken together where something had appeared. So even if I said I didn’t want my photo taken, she understood.
But my friend in Tokyo was different. She was part of our friend group, but even when I told her about my problem, she didn’t believe me.
She would say things like, “You’re just trying to scare us,” or “If something shows up, that would be fun.”
Looking back, I can understand her reaction. If a grown adult starts talking about ghosts and spirit photos, most people are going to look at them like they’re being ridiculous.
But after this trip, she started believing me.
Once you become an adult and start working, there are times when you have no choice but to be in photos: group pictures, company events, things like that. Even now, at my workplace, when I say that strange things show up in photos of me, almost everyone gives me a cold look. Nobody believes it.
Well, almost nobody. One person in the general affairs department at headquarters believes me, because in my first three years at the company, three digital cameras broke after something showed up in photos of me.
Whether it was a disposable camera or a digital camera, things showed up. So even back then, I avoided photos as much as I could.
As a condition for going on the trip, I asked both of them for two things: “Do not take photos of me,” and “Especially do not take photos of me at temples, shrines, or places like that.”
After that, we discussed where to go. None of us had much money, so we wanted somewhere cheap, relaxing, and by the sea. That was how we decided on Toshi Island in Mie Prefecture.
From Toba to Toshi Island
When the year-end holiday arrived, both of my friends came back to their family homes, so we met for tea before the trip.
I had gone to a local university, so I was still in Aichi Prefecture. We met at a familiar coffee shop chain, the kind people in Aichi immediately think of when you say “coffee shop,” and started planning the trip.
While we were talking, my Tokyo friend suddenly got excited and said, “Wow, Toshi Island has a head mound?”
She was what people now might call a history girl. Before we knew it, she had planned a walking route around the island all by herself.
My Kyoto friend and I didn’t have any particular requests, so we decided to just follow her route.
Thinking back, I sometimes wonder if her excitement and the flow of that conversation were being guided by something.
December 31, 200x
On the morning of December 31, we left the Chita Peninsula first thing and went to Nagoya. From there, we took the Kintetsu train to Toba.
The three of us enjoyed the scenery and talked like university girls, asking things like, “Did you get a boyfriend?” The real conversation was too raw to write here, so I’ll leave it out.
From Toba, we took a ferry to Toshi Island.
On the boat, my Tokyo friend suddenly said, “Let’s take a photo of Kushinada at the head mound and see if she can really make a spirit photo happen.”
My Kyoto friend and I panicked.
Even Kyoto, who usually stayed calm, got irritated and warned her, “You absolutely should not do that. You’ll regret it later, and I don’t know what will happen.”
Tokyo backed down for the moment and said, “Sorry, sorry, I was joking.”
But I had a feeling she was going to take one secretly.
People like that usually don’t believe anything until they see it with their own eyes.
Eventually, the ferry arrived, and we landed on the island.
In ghost stories, this is where people often say they felt a bad presence the moment they arrived, or that the locals were strangely unwelcoming. Nothing like that happened.
For one thing, I only have the photo problem. I can’t see or feel spiritual things, so I wouldn’t know. Also, since it was New Year’s, the ferry was full of families who seemed to be returning to the island for the holidays. When we got off, it was lively and noisy.
At the dock, someone from the guesthouse was waiting for us and took us to the inn. They joked, “You’re unusual, coming all the way to a place with nothing at the end of the year.” The trip continued in a friendly mood.
Visiting Kuki Yoshitaka’s Head Mound
As soon as we got to the guesthouse and dropped off our bags, Tokyo said, “Let’s go to the head mound!”
We barely ate lunch before heading out to Kuki Yoshitaka’s head mound.
The head mound of the famous commander was on a small hill on the eastern side of the island.
Looking back now, I think Tokyo had been aiming for this from the beginning.
On the way there, the three of us were chatting like usual. But on the way back, Tokyo suddenly became quiet.
Honestly, I could tell just by looking at her that something had happened.
After we returned to the guesthouse, Kyoto and I agreed: “She took one.”
We confronted Tokyo immediately, but she completely ignored us.
The next day, we were supposed to go fishing with someone from the guesthouse, but Kyoto and I talked it over and canceled right away.
We ended up spending the night in the worst possible mood.
I’ll say this first: nothing happened to me before I got home.
Or rather, maybe something did happen. Maybe something had attached itself to someone. But I can’t feel or see those things, so I don’t know.
So I slept normally and woke up the next morning.
To be honest, I hate scary things. I’m the kind of person who becomes afraid to go to the bathroom alone. I can even get scared of taking a bath.
So I really wished all of this would stop.
According to Kyoto, Tokyo was groaning in her sleep all night.
After We Got Home
After I returned home, nothing happened to me. I went back to my normal life.
Actually, I had sensed that this was definitely bad, so I tried not to get involved.
But after the holiday break, Kyoto called me, and everything changed.
I ended up having to go all the way to Kyoto.
I was furious. I think that was the angriest I have ever been in my life.
This is what Kyoto told me:
1. Tokyo had taken the photo after all. 2. She had photographed me from behind, and a human face was clearly visible on the back of my head. 3. Apparently, Tokyo had also sat on the head mound. 4. Tokyo was feeling sick, and they still had the photo, so they wanted me to introduce them to someone who could perform a purification.
At that point, all I could think was: you brought this on yourself.
I scolded them endlessly over the phone.
But inside, I was panicking too.
Because something had shown up in the photo. And it was on me.
Since things often appeared in my photos, I used to go to Kyoto once a year to have the photos purified and memorialized. Most of the time, they were just little balls of light and didn’t seem like a major problem. But very rarely, there would be a photo like this one, where anyone could see what was in it.
That was exactly why I had those photos handled properly.
This time, however, Tokyo had gotten sick and was clearly acting strange, so I was worried that the trouble might reach me too.
After yelling as much as I could, Kyoto apologized to me over the phone for some reason. Still irritated, I started thinking about what we could do.
The options were basically these:
1. Go to Kyoto immediately and have the photo purified and memorialized. 2. Have both Tokyo and Kyoto receive purification as well.
That was about all we could do.
So I took the developed photo and headed to Kyoto, to the temple where I always had these things handled.
So, We Went to Kyoto
There used to be a famous travel slogan about going to Kyoto, didn’t there?
This was not that kind of Kyoto trip. I had no sympathy for them. It was just a nuisance.
I had never imagined that after traveling to Mie over New Year’s, I would be going to Kyoto right after the holiday for a purification.
I brought the two of them from Aichi to Kyoto, went to the usual temple, showed the photo, and thought the purification would begin.
Instead, only I was taken to a separate room and served tea and sweets.
Apparently, while I was relaxing there, the priest was giving the other two an incredible lecture.
He told them they had done something outrageous, that the other side was extremely angry, and that if possible, they should go back to the actual site immediately and apologize deeply.
I had no idea any of this was happening. I was watching TV and enjoying my tea and sweets.
After that, the two of them received purification and came back to me.
Once I heard the story from the priest, we ended up staying overnight at the temple.
Honestly, the scariest part for me was “staying overnight at the temple.” Even now, years later, I think that may have been the most frightening mission of my life.
The next day, Tokyo had finally regained a little energy, so we headed home.
Even as we were leaving, the priest kept scolding the two of them. I watched and thought, “Well, you deserved it.”
Maybe I could have written this in a funnier way, but because of the subject matter, and because I’m not that skilled a writer, please forgive me.
Aftermath
After we returned to Aichi, Tokyo gradually recovered. About half a year later, she was able to go back to university.
Was it really that bad? Yes. After returning to Aichi, she had been hospitalized.
Because of that, she apparently lost all her credits for the second half of first year and had a hard time catching up in her third year.
From my point of view, though, I think she was lucky it ended at that.
I left out some of the finer details, but the situation at the head mound, Tokyo’s condition after we got back, and what happened before we went to Kyoto were all terrible.
She says her memories of that period are fragmented, but she never wants to go through anything like it again.
She also learned that you should never mess around at places of worship or memorial sites, and you should not take meaningless photos there just for fun.
She also finally believed me when I said strange things show up in my photos.
Final Thoughts
This was the story of a trip I took during my university days.
As I wrote at the beginning, what I want readers to take from this is simple: don’t fool around at places like this, and don’t casually take photos at places like this as a joke.
My Tokyo friend, unfortunately, was not the type to learn her lesson easily. She later caused another legendary incident in Mihama, Fukui Prefecture. I may write about that another time.
There are many people in the world who don’t believe in spirit photos. I’m not trying to deny that view.
But there are also many photos that are hard to explain.
If you are reading this, I sincerely hope you never encounter one.
