Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland helped ignite World War II. Under Hitler’s dictatorship, the war in Europe expanded, and the scars left by fanatical racial persecution remain among the deepest wounds of modern history.
But alongside the better-known atrocities, Nazi Germany also carried out numerous human experiments, most often on Jewish prisoners and other people targeted by the regime. What follows is a look at part of that horrifying history.
This is not folklore or a ghost story. It is a record of real crimes. If you visit Holocaust memorial sites or former camps in Europe, go with respect, follow official rules, and treat them as places of mourning and historical memory.
Terrifying Experiments Conducted by Nazi Germany
Nazi Germany rounded up large numbers of Jewish people and forced them into isolation facilities and concentration camps, including the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp. For those of us living far from that time and place, it can be difficult to fully grasp the suffering caused by the brutal living conditions, forced labor, and other inhumane treatment inside those camps.
Yet another layer of horror was taking place there: human experiments conducted by doctors and scientists working under the Nazi system. Some of these crimes were later revealed during the postwar Nuremberg trials.
Low-Pressure and Low-Oxygen Experiments
Nazi Germany developed advanced fighter aircraft for its time, capable of reaching altitudes of around 12,000 meters. The military wanted to know what kind of physical reactions pilots might experience in such extreme conditions.
Under Luftwaffe doctor Sigmund Rascher, around 200 prisoners were reportedly forced into low-pressure, low-oxygen experiments. About 80 people died as a result. Their bodies were then dissected and treated as experimental records.
Skull Collection and Racial Classification
Another horrific project was associated with Dr. August Hirt, a professor at the Reich University of Strasbourg. The idea was to collect skulls and other data in order to classify human beings by race, a concept tied to Nazi racial ideology and its obsession with “efficient” extermination.
At least 120 prisoners of war and camp inmates were reportedly selected as samples. They were killed with gas in a way intended to avoid damaging the head and neck, and their bodies were preserved in alcohol tanks.
Eugenics and Human Experimentation
Other crimes included forced sterilization experiments, twin experiments, and malaria experiments. These acts treated human beings not as people, but as disposable material for what the Nazis considered “necessary” research under their ideology of racial superiority.
Perhaps the most chilling part is that some of the doctors and scientists involved were highly educated people who, in another era and under a different system, might have contributed to medicine or science. Under Nazi Germany, however, they carried out cruel human experiments with little or no visible moral hesitation.
Nazi Germany’s “Mad Scientists”
Under the Nazi regime, specialists were organized across many fields, including weapons development, urban planning, polar exploration, and medical research. Some groups were said to have operated outside public view.
The persecution of ordinary Jewish people was carried out by forces such as the Gestapo and the SS, organizations with authority to use state violence. After people were captured, many were sent to camps where experiments were conducted under the supervision of doctors and scientists.
Among the most infamous figures was Josef Mengele, known as the “Angel of Death,” who worked at Auschwitz.
Mengele’s role reportedly began with the selection process when prisoners arrived, often packed into trucks or trains. He helped decide who would be used for human experiments and who would be sent to the gas chambers. Prisoners chosen as subjects were killed through numerous methods, and the results were recorded.
Today, medical testing is expected to follow strict ethical standards, including repeated preliminary research before anything can involve human subjects. The Nazi experiments were the opposite: chemical tests, torture-like procedures, and attempts to explore the limits of the human body were carried out on people who had no freedom to refuse.
Some accounts even claim that living prisoners were dissected. Because of these crimes, Mengele remains one of the most notorious figures associated with Nazi medical atrocities. His victims were reportedly referred to as “guinea pigs.”
After the war, the Nuremberg Doctors’ Trial exposed many Nazi medical crimes and led to death sentences for several perpetrators. Mengele himself escaped to South America and died there decades later.

ナチス・ドイツによる恐ろしい人体実験の数々。。ナチス・ドイツは多くのユダヤ人を連行し、有名なアウシュビッツ強制収容所をはじめとした数々の隔離施設へと押し込んだ 。劣悪な生活環境や強制労働による多くの非人道的な行為によって、収容された人々の苦痛を想像するには、現代の日本人である我々にはあまりにも現実感がない。さらにこの数々の収容所で行われていた本当の恐怖、それはドイツが誇る天才的な医師や科学者による多くの人体実験である。以下は 戦後のニュルンベルク裁判にて明らかになった悪魔のような人体実験の一部 だ。
低圧、低酸素の環境下における生体反応。。高度12,000メートルという当時として最新の戦闘機を開発したナチス・ドイツは、この戦闘機に兵士が搭乗した時にどのような生体反応が起こるのかを把握出来なかった。空軍のジクムント・ラッシャー博士によって被験者とされた約200名の囚人は強制的に低圧、低酸素状態にさらされ、この実験によって亡くなった約80人の遺体は解剖されて実験記録として処理されたのである。人種選別による頭蓋骨収集。。ストラスブール国立大学教授のアウグスト・ヒルト博士が発案した頭蓋骨収集という検証は、収集したデータによって人種を選別し、効率よく撃滅出来るという狂気の発想から許可された。
各地からサンプルとして集められた少なくとも120名の捕虜や囚人は、 生きたまま首から上を損傷しないようにガスによって殺害 され、その遺体はアルコール水槽に保存されていった。選民思想と人体実験。。この他にも、 「強制不妊化実験」や「双子実験」「マラリヤ実験」 などといった人を人として扱わない数々の凶行が選民思想による必要な実験として各地で行われている。しかし、もっとも恐ろしいのは、時代が違えば医学や科学に大きく貢献出来たような天才達がナチス・ドイツという背景を持ったことにより。

一般的なユダヤ人を迫害していたのは、いわゆるゲシュタポやSS部隊といった「軍事的制裁を許可された部隊」であり、彼らに捕まった後に、各地の収容所などで科学者や医師の立ち会いのもとに多くの人体実験をしていたとされている。中でも「死の天使」と呼ばれたヨーゼフ・メンゲレは悪名高いアウシュビッツ強制収容所の担当をしていた。。画像引用元： ヨーゼフ・メンゲレ 。メンゲレの主な仕事は、トラックなどに詰め込まれた囚人がアウシュビッツ強制収容所に到着した際に、誰を人体実験に使うか、誰をガス室での毒殺実験に使うか、といった「選定作業」に始まり、被験者に選ばれた囚人を、数多くの方法で殺害してはその記録を残していた。
現在では、慎重なマウス実験などを繰り返してから行うような薬品の実験から、いわゆる人体の限界を探るような拷問など、その手法には枚挙にいとまがない。一説には生きたままの囚人を解剖していたという話しもあり、ナチス・ドイツにおいても、もっとも狂気を持った人物だと言える。そんな彼の被験者の呼び名は「モルモット」であったとも言われている。戦後、ニュルンベルク裁判では当然死刑判決を受けたものの南米に逃亡し、最後は心臓発作で死んだ
