English Version

Hyogo Prefecture has no shortage of places whispered about as haunted. Mt. Kabuto is often named among the scariest, and Mt. Myoken on the Osaka–Kyoto border is another famous one.

This story, however, comes from a reader’s submitted account about an anonymous haunted spot in Hyogo: F Mountain’s ○ Pass. Because it is described as a real experience, the exact location is not given.

If you visit mountain roads or rumored haunted places in Japan, stay on public roads, do not trespass, avoid unsafe night driving, and never interfere with police or emergency situations.

The Headless Rider of F Mountain Pass

This happened when the narrator was a university student.

At the part-time job where they worked, there was an annual summer tradition: after closing, the staff would pile into a car and go on what they called a “ghost tour,” driving around local haunted spots in Hyogo.

The narrator says they were never the type to believe in ghosts. Still, they were young, and they enjoyed the noisy, reckless energy that always came with those late-night trips. They also had not traveled much growing up because of their parents’ work, so even short drives around Hyogo felt exciting.

That night, they had planned another test-of-courage trip after work. A light rain had started to fall, so the narrator initially declined. But coworkers and an older senior kept pushing, and in the end, they joined.

Four men squeezed into a tiny kei car with barely functioning air conditioning. The music was absurdly loud, everyone was shouting and laughing, and they drove through the night toward their destination.

Looking back, the narrator says it is hard to imagine doing something like that now. But they were young.

Their destination was F Mountain’s ○ Pass in Hyogo. They entered it into the car navigation system and set off.

At the time, a rumor was circulating about that mountain. People said the ghost of a headless rider appeared there.

As the narrator remembers it, the story went something like this:

Late at night, while driving along the mountain pass, you see a single light approaching from behind.

A motorcycle at this hour?

The road is pitch-dark, with no lights, and it winds sharply through the mountains. You keep driving, thinking the rider must have a death wish. But the light never disappears.

It follows at a steady distance, as if touring with you up the slope.

Technically, the rider is not doing anything wrong. But it feels wrong. Some drivers get irritated. Others feel a deep unease because of where they are.

According to the rumor, most people eventually hit the gas, panic on the mountain road, and crash. Those who crash supposedly all say the same thing afterward.

But there were also people who stopped or pulled aside to let the rider pass.

What they saw overtaking them was a motorcyclist with no head.

So at F Mountain’s ○ Pass, the rumor said, you were forced into one of two choices: see the terrifying headless rider, or have an accident trying to escape him.

The Figure in the Fog

They drove up the pitch-black pass toward the top of F Mountain.

At the time, the area was known as a gathering place for street racers, but that night it was late, rainy, and deserted. They did not even pass an oncoming car before reaching the summit.

And that was the end of the first half of the ghost tour.

Nothing happened. It was the same as always.

The narrator says they had never actually experienced anything supernatural on those trips. The real reason they kept going was simple: it was an excuse to fool around with friends.

When they got out of the car, the rain had stopped. In its place, fog began to gather. Their T-shirts clung damply to their bodies.

They bought canned coffee from a vending machine, joked about breathing in the haunted atmosphere, smoked Marlboros, and talked. That was the feeling they had gone out for every summer night.

After about 15 minutes, they got back in the car. The fun was over.

The narrator had poor eyesight, so they were never made to drive on these haunted-spot trips. They say that if they had been behind the wheel that night, they might have crashed from fear.

But not because they saw the headless rider.

On the way down, they saw something even more frightening.

The Hanging Man

As they descended from F Mountain, the fog grew thicker. The driver turned on the fog lamps and crawled down the road at a near walking pace, using high beams that barely reached through the mist.

Then, just as they came through a wide curve, the headlights skimmed across something.

Between the trees, a white human shape appeared.

The narrator froze for an instant, then immediately decided it must be a doll.

Someone’s prank.

After all, this was a haunted spot. Maybe someone had set it up to scare people who came for a test of courage. The placement was clever. It would appear suddenly, and once the car passed, there would be no easy way to turn around and check.

The narrator even thought, “So this is how ghost stories are born.”

No one else seemed to notice, so they said nothing. They did not want to give whoever had set the prank the satisfaction.

They drove down the mountain and stopped at the usual convenience store for their ghost tours.

But as soon as the senior who had been driving pulled the hand brake, he suddenly spoke.

“Did you see that man hanging himself back there?”

The narrator went cold.

The other two immediately said, “I saw him too.”

All four of them had seen the same thing.

Inside the convenience store near the Hyogo border, under lights so bright they felt unreal, the group fell silent. Unusually, no one smoked. The radio was playing a local AM station.

Soon, though, they started arguing.

Was it a prank? Trash? A ghost? A real suicide?

Because it was so late and they were making a commotion, the convenience store clerk came over to see what was happening. The senior told him what they had seen.

The clerk reportedly said:

“Probably a suicide. People hang themselves around there pretty often. It’s hard to be seen. I guess it could be the ghost of someone who died by suicide, too… But either way, I don’t recommend going there for fun.”

With that comment added to the discussion, they kept debating. The narrator tried to stay realistic, and eventually they narrowed the possibilities down to a prank, trash, or an actual dead person.

But that last possibility created a problem.

If it was only an object, fine.

But if it was really someone who had died there, could they just leave?

“He might still be breathing,” the senior said.

With that, they decided to return to the haunted spot.

The narrator admits they were annoyed. In their mind, it had to be a prank or garbage. And even if it was a person, they thought harshly that someone who hanged themselves in such a visible place was beyond their help. If it was suicide, they were probably already dead.

Going back would change nothing.

“We can’t just leave a body there like that,” the senior said, sounding oddly serious and subdued.

The narrator suddenly remembered that the senior’s family home had some connection to a temple or shrine, though they could not remember which.

They thought about that on the way back. Looking back now, the narrator believes it was obvious escapism.

Even while thinking the whole thing was ridiculous, they were terrified of something.

Back to the Curve

The car returned to the haunted pass and stopped just before the curve.

The road was wider there, and it looked like the only place they could safely pull over.

Using a weak flashlight from a cheap emergency tool kit, they headed toward the spot.

The narrator does not remember exactly how it was decided, but two people stayed in the car while the other two went to check. In the end, the narrator and the senior walked toward the curve together.

The road lights were already weak and spaced far apart. The flashlight was all they had.

Cold air from the mountain chilled the damp T-shirt clinging to the narrator’s skin. They still remember that, despite how noisy the insects usually were, there was no sound of bugs at all.

They reached the curve.

When they looked back, all they could see were the headlights of the car waiting behind them.

They shone the light over the tree where the figure should have been, but nothing looked unusual.

No body.

No doll.

So maybe it had only been a plastic sheet or piece of cloth caught in the branches.

The Rope

“Hey!” the senior shouted.

He swung the flashlight in a circle.

There, hanging down, was a rope.

Just the rope.

“Do you think someone hung a doll from that?” the narrator asked.

“Idiot! It was a suicide!” the senior snapped.

“Then where’s the body?”

The senior pointed the light downward. He swept it everywhere, even pushing into the bushes.

But there was nothing.

When they looked up, there was only a single rope hanging limply like a shed snakeskin.

“It was a prank,” the narrator said.

“No, it might have been a suicide,” the senior insisted.

The narrator was just thinking that this had become a real nuisance when they heard a rustle.

They spun around.

A man covered in blood was standing there.

He made a low groaning sound, like his throat had been crushed. His eyes were bloodshot.

The narrator and the senior both screamed in deep, panicked voices and ran.

They jumped into the car, left immediately, and returned to the same convenience store.

The group concluded that what they had seen must have been the ghost of someone who had died by suicide.

They split up for the night.

But when the narrator was alone at home, the blood-soaked face would not leave their mind.

Then one question occurred to them.

If it had been the ghost of someone who hanged himself, why was he covered in blood?

What the Newspaper Said

The narrator says the answer came the next day.

There was an article in the newspaper about an incident.

A murder on F Mountain.

It had taken place in a deserted, fog-covered mountain area.

The victim had been killed and hung from a rope to make it look like a suicide.

The plan had failed because of witnesses.

The body had then been dismembered and abandoned.

As the narrator read the article without breathing, they saw a photograph of the suspect.

It was the convenience store clerk who had spoken to them the night before.

The narrator believes the clerk had hung the body from the rope to make the death look like a hanging suicide. The group had seen it from the car.

The body was probably supposed to be discovered later. But if the group went back and examined it, that would ruin the plan. So, according to the narrator’s understanding, the clerk returned to the scene and took the body down.

Whether it was because of evidence, an alibi, or some other problem, the reason is unclear. But the killer apparently changed plans, dismembered the body, and hid it in the mountains.

By then, however, it was nearly dawn. A nearby elderly resident found something, and the arrest followed.

So what the narrator and the senior saw was not a ghost.

It was the killer.

And the blood on him was likely from dismembering the body.

After that, the group never went on another haunted-spot tour.

In the end, the narrator says, they never experienced a real supernatural event at all.

But maybe a ghost would have been better than being caught up in a murder case.
