Nanbara Tunnel in Hiroshima is officially called Nanbara Zuido, using an older word for tunnel. It sits on Hiroshima Prefectural Route 253, the road toward Nanbara Gorge, a valley known for autumn leaves, and it leads in the direction of Nanbara Dam.
Among Hiroshima ghost-spot fans, Nanbara Tunnel is famous for a set of very typical haunted-tunnel rumors. As always with stories like these, treat them as local legends rather than verified facts.
Rumors About Nanbara Tunnel
The main stories often repeated online include the following:
- If you stop inside the tunnel, turn off both the engine and headlights, and honk the horn three times, a spirit will fall from the ceiling.
- Spirits are said to live in the concrete ceiling, dropping onto the hood of passing cars with a heavy thud.
- A severed head is said to rush toward drivers from the darkness ahead.
- If you take a photo by the stone monument beyond the tunnel, a ghost may appear in the image.
- Nanbara Gorge itself is rumored to be a suicide spot.
- At the restroom in Nanbara Gorge Campground, located at the dead end beyond the tunnel, the ghost of a person who died by suicide is said to appear.
- Another rumor claims a woman was assaulted and died in that same campground restroom.
- A combined version of those stories says a dying message scrawled by a suicide victim still remains on the wall: I do not want to die. I do not want to die.
- Some people also claim to have seen fireballs at the campground.
Please do not attempt the tunnel ritual described above. Stopping in a tunnel, turning off lights, or blocking a road can be dangerous and may violate traffic laws.
Nanbara, Myojin, and the Dams Beyond
Beyond Hiroshima’s haunted Nanbara Tunnel lies Nanbara Dam. Beyond another haunted spot, Myojin Tunnel, lies Myojin Dam.
Myojin Tunnel is actually a series of three connected tunnels, and some say it is the more serious haunted location. According to one common explanation, many of the rumors now attached to Nanbara Tunnel may have originally come from Myojin Tunnel instead.
The legend says that as you pass through the tunnels one by one and move deeper into the mountains, the concentration of spirits grows stronger. In Hiroshima ghost-story circles, one of the standard claims is that anyone who makes it all the way out through the final exit will die within the next few days.
A warning posted on one haunted-spot blog says the road to the three Myojin tunnels was eventually closed because the area became too famous. It is reportedly off-limits except to authorized personnel. The land is associated with Chugoku Electric Power, which supplies electricity in the Hiroshima area, and signs are said to warn that alarms may activate. In short: do not climb fences or enter restricted areas.
Nanbara Tunnel is on the way to Nanbara Dam and the campground. Cars cannot continue beyond the campground. Farther beyond that are the Myojin tunnels, which lead toward Myojin Dam, but reaching them requires walking through mountain terrain. Because the original Myojin Tunnel area is difficult to reach, the easier-to-access Nanbara Tunnel seems to have become the more famous haunted spot over time.
In the past, the first, second, and third Myojin tunnels were reportedly open to anyone. But after the location became famous as a haunted place, visitors came from both inside and outside Hiroshima. Since there is nothing past Myojin Tunnel except the dam, everyone had to return the same way they came.
Motorcycle gangs and thrill-seekers allegedly began gathering there, especially on weekends and during summer vacation, creating noise night after night. Local residents complained, and the power company eventually closed the route.
One detail is certain enough to take seriously: the metal fence at the closed entrance reportedly has spear-like pointed tips. Trying to climb over it could cause serious injury even if nothing supernatural happens.
Some blogs have described people entering anyway and then writing about the scenic dam beyond the fence. That is still trespassing. For travelers and horror fans, the safest option is to enjoy the story without entering closed property.
Old Rumors About the Three Myojin Tunnels
The following are older stories associated with the Myojin Tunnel area:
- At the entrance of the first tunnel, an old man is said to be sitting. If you see him, you should turn back immediately.
- In the second tunnel, people claim to hear a child crying. The warning is the same: turn back while you still can.
- In the third tunnel, a police officer on a bicycle is said to come from the far side of the tunnel. Even though he is a police officer, he appears in complete darkness with no light on his bicycle. By the time you realize how wrong that is, the story says it is already too late.
Once you pass through the tunnel, there is only the dam. Nothing else is there. You have no choice but to turn around and go back.
According to the rumor, anyone who passes through all of the Myojin tunnels, also known as the three Myojin tunnels, will inevitably have an accident and die. Many people are said to share this story, though it remains only a rumor.
Another Hiroshima location known in haunted-spot circles for frequent accidents is Koi Pass. One rumor says that if you go there to pray, a voice tells you, You should have died.
A Commenter’s Experience Near Nanbara Gorge
The following account was taken from comments on a Hiroshima haunted-spot experience site. It is presented as a story, not as proof or a travel recommendation.
About ten years before the comment was written, the poster was a university student in Hiroshima. One night, they went with three friends for a test of courage at the well-known Nanbara Gorge Tunnel.
The road there was deserted. As they drove forward into the evening darkness, the tunnel appeared in the headlights. It looked unused, and red traffic cones were placed at the entrance, a detail that made it feel even more like a classic haunted spot.
They moved the cones aside and brought the car as close to the entrance as possible. Then they stopped and stepped inside.
They left the car lights on, but the beams reached only about 20 meters into the tunnel, roughly one-tenth of its total length. While they stayed within the light, everyone acted calm. But the moment they entered the pitch-black space beyond, fear seemed to crawl up the poster’s back. They later wrote that it was not just fear on their back; their whole body became a mass of fear.
When everyone fell silent, the poster heard ringing in their ears. Then came something like human voices. It did not sound like one or two people whispering. It sounded like the murmur of dozens of people. The air itself seemed full of presences, and the poster felt so frightened they might vomit.
They called out to the other three, saying they could not take it anymore and wanted to go back to the entrance. But the others urged them to keep going to the exit. Reluctantly, the poster held hands with the group and hurried forward.
Just outside the exit, there was a small hut about the size of a restroom. One friend went to look inside, then came back and said it was bad and that nobody else should look. When asked what was there, the friend said several photos of an elderly woman were lying on the floor.
The poster only remembers desperately retracing the route back through the tunnel, guided by a friend’s hand until they returned to the entrance. After that, everyone went home.
But according to the poster, the real fear began afterward.
They arrived home around 3:00 a.m. At the time, they lived alone in an apartment building with two elevators side by side. They pressed the button for one elevator. They were clear about this: they pressed only one button. But the doors that opened belonged to the other elevator.
They lived there and knew the elevators were not supposed to work that way. Only the elevator whose button was pressed should have moved.
For a moment, the poster froze. Then they decided it was probably a mechanical glitch or a mistake and got in.
Once inside their room, they immediately turned on the TV. Silence was unbearable; they needed to hear a human voice. For a brief moment, they felt relieved. Then the screen suddenly turned to static.
They had been watching a late-night shopping program. It did not matter what was on, as long as someone was talking. They kept pressing the remote, but even local Hiroshima channels would not appear. They checked behind the TV to see if a cable had come loose, went out to the veranda to check the antenna, and tried the buttons on the TV itself. Sometimes the picture returned, but it quickly fell back into static.
Covered in anxiety and irritation, they pulled the futon over themselves while thinking about what might be broken and what they would do the next day. It felt, they wrote, as if the spirits had moved out of the haunted spot and into their room.
They ended the comment by saying that people should not casually visit haunted places, and that they regretted going. The story stopped there, unresolved.
Other Reported Comments
Another commenter wrote simply that they went to Nanbara Gorge in Hiroshima and nothing happened.
A third person said they once rented a car with classmates and went to Myojin Tunnel. In the middle of the tunnel, as a joke, they turned off the engine and the lights, leaving everything in total darkness.
When they tried to restart the engine, it would not start. They tried again and again, but nothing happened. A strange ringing sound, possibly caused by airflow inside the tunnel, seemed to fill the space. They closed the windows, turned the headlights to high beam, and kept turning the starter while nearly crying. At last, the engine started. They were relieved the battery had not died, left immediately, and said they would never go back.
Again, do not imitate this. Turning off a vehicle in a tunnel is dangerous.
A Local Resident’s View
One commenter who said they live in Nanbara offered a very different perspective.
According to them, they had never heard any local ghost stories about the three Myojin tunnels. If any place in the area has a real basis for ghost stories, they said, it would be Nanbara Tunnel, which anyone can pass through, rather than the closed Myojin tunnels.
They claimed that about 50 years ago, someone died in an industrial accident during construction work at Nanbara Tunnel. Outside the tunnel, they also mentioned an incident more than 40 years ago in which a woman died by self-immolation in the campground restroom. They said they had heard ghost stories connected to that event.
As for the three Myojin tunnels, the local commenter said no one died during construction there, and even looking back through the past, there did not seem to have been any major incidents or accidents. In their view, the place was peaceful.
They added that the three tunnels had been closed for a long time and that surveillance cameras were said to be installed. Although the tunnels have become famous online as a haunted spot, they questioned how many people had actually gone all the way there and risked trespassing to write about it.
After all, posting proof of such a visit would be like advertising that you committed an illegal act. The commenter suspected that most of the online stories were simply entertaining inventions.

壁には「わしは死にたくない。わしは死にたくない」と書かれている。。・キャンプ場で火の玉を見た人がいる。等々。広島県の心霊スポット 「南原トンネル」 の奥には 南原ダム があり、同じく広島県の心霊スポット 「明神トンネル」 の奥には 明神ダム があります。「明神トンネル」は三つ連なっており、こちらの方が、より 深刻な心霊スポット らしいのです。上のまとめた噂話も、元々は「明神トンネル」から変化したものです。トンネルを 一つまた一つと潜り、奥へ奥へと進むにつれ、霊の濃度は濃くなっていきます。
最後の 出口まで出てしまうと、近日中に死んでしまうというのが、広島県下では鉄板ネタ なんだとか。ある心霊スポットブログの注意書きによると、心霊スポットとして有名になってしまったがために、 明神三連トンネルへの道は封鎖され、関係者以外立ち入り禁止 となった。としています。柵を乗り越えなれば行けませんが、広島県下に電気を配る中国電力の土地であり、警報装置が作動する旨が書かれた看板があるので、辞めておいた方が身のため ともありました。広島県有数の最恐心霊スポット「南原トンネル」「南原ダム」「明神トンネル」「明神ダム」。
「南原トンネル」は南原ダムとキャンプ場へ行く途中にあり、キャンプ場から先へは車ではいけません。その奥に 「明神トンネル」があり明神ダムへと繋がっています が、キャンプ場からは徒歩 を余儀なくされます。結構な山道を行かなければ、大元の「明神トンネル」までたどり着けない のです。そのせいか分かりませんが、いつの間にか、お手軽な「南原トンネル」が広島県有数の心霊スポットとして脚光を浴びることになってしまいました。実はこの「明神トンネル」、昔は第一、第二、第三と誰でも通れました。
しかし、心霊スポットとして広島県下で有名になってしまい、内外問わず人が来て賑わってしまったのが災いしました。上記したように「明神トンネル」の先にはダムしかありません。来た道を帰るしかないのが定めです。。暴走族がやって来てはたむろし、帰っていきます。週末、夏休みともなれば、毎日毎夜のお祭り騒ぎ。地元民は騒音に悩まされました。怒りの矛先は電力会社へ向けられ、あえなく閉鎖と成りました。しかし、一つだけいえる事があります。それは閉鎖された入口の金属柵の先端は槍状に尖っており、跨ぐのに失敗すると、死ななくても怪我はするということです。
それを決行した人のブログがありました。何やらダムの風光明媚について感慨にふけっていましたが、もちろん違法行為です。以下は、広島県「明神トンネル」にまつわる、かつての噂をまとめてみました。蛮勇を持ってトンネルを、ずんずん進んで行くと、いったい、その心霊スポットでは何が待っているのか?。タイトルが入ります。・第一目トンネル、入口に老人が座っている。その老人を見たら引き返すべし。さもなくば……。・第二トンネル、子供の泣き声が聞こえてくる。まだ間に合う、引き返せ。
・第三トンネル、トンネルの向こうから自転車に乗った警官が来る。真っ暗な暗闇を、警察官にもかかわらず無灯火で現れる。この時点で色々アウトだと気づいても、もう遅い。トンネルを抜けると、そこはダム。何もありません。後は引き返すだけです。「明神トンネル」通称「明神三連トンネル」を全て通った人は必ず事故に合い死ぬ といいます。多くの人が、そのような話を共有していると、もっぱらの噂なのです。同じ広島でも 事故が多発する心霊スポットとして知られてるのが「己斐峠」 です。

使われなくなったトンネルらしく、入口には心霊スポットにふさわしい赤いコーンが置かれていました。私たちはそれを横にどけ、入口ギリギリまで車を入れました。そこで車を停め、中に足を踏み入れました。ライトはつけたままでしたが、光が届く範囲は20メートルが限界。全長の約1分の10ほどにすぎませんでした。光の届くうちは、みんな余裕しゃくしゃくでしたが、 前後不覚な漆黒へ突入した途端、背中から恐怖が這い上がりました 。いえ、全身恐怖の塊になった、が正解です。

友人が中を見に行くと「ヤバいから、これは見ない方が良い」と言って出て来ました。何があったんだ？と尋ねると、 お婆さんの写真が何枚も落ちていた と答えました。祈るような気持ちで、来た道を引き返したのだけは覚えています。友人の誰かに手を引いてもらって、何とか入口まで戻りました。後は、それぞれ帰路へ着きました。しかし、 本当の恐怖はここから でした。家に着いたのは夜中3時頃だったと思します。当時、私はマンションの一人暮らしでした。並んだエレベーターが２つあって、一方のボタンを押しました。
あいまいな記憶ではありません。片方だけ押したんです。でも、開いたの押してない別の扉。私はそこに住んでいたんです。そういう仕様ではありませんでした。ボタンを押した方しか動かないはずなのです。エレベーターは反対側が開きました。一瞬固まりましたが、機械の誤作動か自分の勘違いと思い乗り込みました。なだれ込むよう部屋へ入るや、テレビのスイッチを点けました。無音は耐え難く、誰かの声が必要でした。安心したのも束の間、心のよすがが切れました。画面がいきなり砂嵐になった のです。
チャンネルを合わせていたのは深夜の通販番組でした。なんでもよかったのです、人の声さえ聞こえたら。とにかくリモコンをチャカチャカしましたが、広島県のローカルすら映りません。配線が外れたか、アンテナがズレたかと、テレビの後ろに回り、ヴェランダへ出ました。箱本体のボタンも押してみました。調子が戻っても、すぐに砂嵐に逆戻り。何度やっても同じでした。不安とイライラに塗(まみ)れ、故障の原因と明日の対処法を考えながら布団をかぶりました。霊たちが心霊スポットから引っ越して、自分の部屋が彼らの棲み処になってしまった ようでした。

唯一、心霊スポットなりえる根拠があるのは、むしろ誰でも通れる南原トンネルです。50年前、 工事中に労災の事故で亡くなられた方 がいました。トンネル以外だと、 キャンプ場のトイレで女性が焼身自殺した事件 がありました。これも40年以上前の話です。それに関連した幽霊話なら、確かに聞いたことがあります。明神の3つのトンネルに限って言えば、工事で亡くなった人はいないし、遡っても、目立った事件事故は起きていないようです。いたって平穏です。ちなみに、もうずいぶん前から3連トンネルは封鎖されていて、監視カメラが設置されていると聞いています。
ネットでは、3連トンネルは心霊スポットとして有名になってしまいましたが、はたしてどれだけの人が現場まで足を向け、不法侵入のリスクを冒してまで書き込んだのか疑問です。それを実演したら、私は違法行為をしましたと宣伝しているようなものですから。思うに、殆どの方が、面白おかしい作り話をしているだけではないでしょうか。
