Curses appear in cultures all over the world. In Japan, one of the better-known images is the straw doll nailed to a tree. But what about the United States, more than ten hours away from Japan by plane?
One of America’s famous political ghost stories is known as Tecumseh’s Curse, a legend said to strike roughly every 20 years.
A Curse That Comes Every 20 Years
Since the founding of the United States, many presidents have led the country, from George Washington to Abraham Lincoln, the president famous for the Emancipation Proclamation.
According to the urban legend, however, American presidents have often died at intervals of about 20 years. This pattern is called Tecumseh’s Curse, and it is still discussed as one of America’s political legends.
The Story Begins With War Against Native Peoples
Tecumseh’s Curse is said to come from Tecumseh, a Shawnee leader connected to the wars between the United States and Native American nations. From 1622 to 1890, the United States expanded its territory through repeated conflicts with Indigenous peoples. These wars are also remembered as part of the genocide of Native Americans, one of the darkest chapters of early American history.
In the legend, Tecumseh was the Native leader who placed the curse that would return every 20 years. He was a hero of the Shawnee people, but the story says he was killed in 1811 at the Battle of Tippecanoe. The American commander associated with that battle was William Henry Harrison.
After Tippecanoe, Harrison eventually became president in 1841. According to the legend, that is when the terrifying curse began.
Presidents Who Fell in the Pattern
William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia only 31 days after taking office.
After him, at intervals of roughly 20 years, presidents including Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, and William McKinley were assassinated. The timing is not perfectly exact, but the repeated pattern of presidents dying after a certain span of years is what kept the legend alive. Since many of these deaths happened while the presidents were still in office, each one must have thrown the government into confusion at the time.
| President | Year of death | Cause of death | Notes | |—|—:|—|—| | William Henry Harrison | 1841 | Pneumonia | Shortest presidency in US history, at 31 days | | Abraham Lincoln | 1865 | Assassination | Famous for the Emancipation Proclamation | | James Garfield | 1881 | Assassination | Second-shortest presidency, about six months | | William McKinley | 1901 | Assassination | Associated with the gold standard in the American market | | Warren Harding | 1923 | Heart attack | A central figure of the Roaring Twenties | | Franklin D. Roosevelt | 1945 | Cerebral hemorrhage | Famous for the New Deal | | John F. Kennedy | 1963 | Assassination | Famous for his response to the Cuban Missile Crisis |
The Roaring Twenties refers to the period of rapid prosperity in the United States during the 1920s, when jazz, automobiles, and movies developed dramatically.
Did Tecumseh’s Curse End?
Looking at the list above, it is easy to see why people connected these presidential deaths to Tecumseh’s Curse. However, the curse may have ended in 1963.
That is because Ronald Reagan, who became president roughly 20 years after John F. Kennedy’s assassination, survived. Reagan, a former movie actor, was shot in an assassination attempt in 1981, but the attack failed.
Another 20 years later, George W. Bush also completed his presidency. During his time in office, incidents included a grenade being thrown during a speech and Bush fainting while eating, but he still served out his term.
Because of cases like these, many people say Tecumseh’s Curse has already come to an end.
Was It Just Luck?
Still, some people argue that Reagan and Bush survived only by chance.
In Reagan’s case, the assassination attempt failed, but some point out that he might have died if the bullet had traveled differently or if there had not been a hospital nearby.
Reagan was also diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 1994. In occult rumor, some have suggested this was the price he paid for breaking Tecumseh’s Curse.
Others say Reagan and Bush were protected because Christian groups prayed for them to avoid the curse. In fact, Christianity and US presidential elections are deeply connected, and it is widely said that many of Bush’s supporters were Christian fundamentalists.
For anyone who wants to understand this background more deeply, the 2006 documentary Jesus Camp offers a look at conservative Christian culture in the United States. For viewers from more secular cultures, the worldview shown in the film may feel surprising or even shocking.
Could the Curse Return in 2020?
If Tecumseh’s Curse had not truly ended, the next cycle would have pointed to 2020.
At the time this article was written in November 2019, the United States was approaching another presidential election. Candidates included Bernie Sanders, who had strong support among young voters, and Andrew Yang, who had the possibility of becoming the first Asian American president. Donald Trump, the sitting president at the time, was also running for reelection.
Tecumseh’s Curse was already said by many to be over. Even so, if something were to happen in that election year, the legend would become impossible for horror fans and urban-legend watchers to ignore.
