Fujiya is a famous Japanese sweets company known for cakes, ice cream, and other Western-style desserts. Its beloved mascot, Peko-chan, is instantly recognizable: a cheerful little girl with a smile and her tongue sticking out.
But behind that cute expression, there is a disturbing urban legend. This is the story often told about why Peko-chan is always shown with her tongue out.
Why Is Peko-chan Sticking Out Her Tongue?
If someone asks you to picture Peko-chan, many people will imagine her with that familiar playful expression, her tongue peeking out. But have you ever wondered why she looks that way?
One of the most commonly repeated rumors says that Peko-chan was based on a real girl who lived during wartime. According to the legend, her father had been sent away to fight as a soldier, leaving the girl and her mother to survive together in poverty.
Food was scarce, and the two lived in constant hunger. Every day was filled with anxiety over how they would make it to the next meal.
When they reached their limit, the mother supposedly told the girl to cut off and eat her arm. In other words, she offered part of her own body as food so her daughter could live.
Under normal circumstances, anyone would hesitate. But the legend says Peko-chan was beyond the point of clear judgment from starvation. She ate her mother’s arm and, for the first time in a long while, her hunger was satisfied.
But hunger only fades for a short time.
When that unbearable hunger returned, Peko-chan could not forget the taste of her mother. Eventually, according to the rumor, she killed her mother and ate her flesh.
The legend says Peko-chan sticks out her tongue either to lick away the blood left around her mouth, or to hide the evidence of what she had done.
The Meaning Hidden in Milky
The same legend is sometimes connected to Milky, Fujiya’s famous milk-flavored candy, which also features Peko-chan as a mascot.
Many people in Japan know the candy’s commercial jingle, which says that Milky tastes like “Mama’s flavor.” Normally, that phrase sounds warm and nostalgic, like the taste of a mother’s cooking or the comfort of childhood.
But when connected to the urban legend above, some people interpret it in a much darker way: “Mama’s flavor” could mean the taste of the mother’s flesh.
There is also a rumor about the name Milky itself. While it may simply come from the candy’s creamy, milky taste, some people have pointed out that, depending on how it is pronounced, it can sound a little like “kill me.”
Of course, this is only an eerie interpretation, not a confirmed meaning.
A Tragic War Story Turned Urban Legend
This is a frightening story, and not one most people would want to believe. At the same time, the legend carries a sense of tragedy: a mother’s desperate wish for her daughter to survive, even at the cost of her own body.

ケーキやアイスクリームといった洋菓子を数多く販売している不二家。この不二家にはあの人気なマスコットキャラクターペコちゃんがいますね。ニコッとしたかわいらしい舌を出した表情のペコちゃんには実は恐怖の都市伝説が存在するのです。今回はペコちゃんの笑顔の裏に隠された都市伝説を紹介したいと思います。ペコちゃんが舌を出している理由。。今、ここでペコちゃんを想像してくださいと言ったら、多くの人が舌をペロッと出した表情を思い浮かべるかと思います。考えたことはないでしょうか？
。なぜ、ペコちゃんは舌を出しているのか？。この謎に包まれたペコちゃんの舌で最も多く語られているのが、キャラクターのモデルとなった少女と母親の話です。ペコちゃんのモデルとなった少女は、戦時中に実在していた人物だそうです。父親は戦時中のため兵士として戦場に駆り出されているため、ペコちゃんと母親の二人で日々貧しい暮らしを送っていました。当然食べるものも少なく常にお腹をすかせた状態で、日々をどう食いつないでいくのかと不安な日々が続いていました。
限界を超えた時に、母親がペコちゃんに 「自分の腕を切り落として食べなさい」 と自分の腕を食糧にしろと娘へと差し出したのです。普通ならためらうかも知れませんが、すでに空腹具合は限界を突破していたペコちゃんは 母親の腕を食べてしまう のでした。この時すでに正常な判断ができなかったことが考えられますね。久々の食事にペコちゃんは、空腹が満たされたのでした。空腹というのは一時的にしか満たされないため、再度狂うような空腹が襲ってきた際に、ペコちゃんはあの時の母親の味を忘れることができなかったため、ついには 母親の命を奪ってまでその肉を食べてしまった のです。
その時に口元に付着した母親の血液をなめとるために舌を出している又はそれを隠すためにペコちゃんは常に舌を出しているといわれているのです。ミルキーに隠された意味。。上記ではペコちゃんの舌について解説してきました。ここで紹介するのは、ペコちゃんをマスコットキャラクターとする不二家を代表するお菓子、ミルキーについてです。「ミルキーは、ママの味～」 。というコマーシャルを耳にしたことはあると思います。。小さいときに、必ずしも食べたことがある甘くておいしいミルク味のキャンディーです。
一般的な解釈でこの歌を聞けば、「お母さんの味なんだな」「おふくろの味」このような意味としてとらえることができるかもしれません。しかし、上記で紹介した都市伝説を兼ねて考えてみると、 ママの味とは「母親の肉の味」 を示しているのではないかと考えられますね。そして、ミルキーという商品名ですが、おそらくクリーミーから由来しているのかもしれませんが、発音や言い方を変えてみると、「KILL ME（私を殺して）」という風に聞こえるのは筆者だけなのでしょうか？
