What Is Hachishakusama?
Hachishakusama is a woman from a modern Japanese internet ghost story, said to be over two meters tall and capable of killing the people she becomes fixated on. She is often described as appearing with an eerie smile and a strange, unsettling voice.
The story is best known from a post on 2channel, Japan’s famous anonymous message board. In the legend, Hachishakusama stalks the person she has “chosen,” and that person may die within a few days.
Her usual targets are said to be men and small children. She also has the ability to imitate the voices of family members or someone the victim loves, using those familiar voices to lure them outside.
The Story of Hachishakusama
In the story, the narrator’s father’s family home was less than two hours away. When the narrator was in high school, they often visited during long school breaks, such as summer and winter vacation.
After becoming an adult, however, they stopped visiting for many years. Then, for the first time in decades, the narrator went back to their grandfather’s house.
It was a pleasant, sunny day, and they were relaxing in the sun when they heard a strange sound:
Po po… poppo… popopopo…
It did not sound mechanical. It sounded as if a person were making the noise.
Wondering what it was, the narrator looked around and noticed what seemed to be a hat above the hedge. But the hat was not simply sitting there. It was moving sideways.
Then they saw a woman.
She was wearing a hat and a white one-piece dress. As she moved, she kept making that eerie sound.
Later, the narrator told their grandfather and grandmother what had happened while they were having tea in the living room. The moment the grandparents heard the story, they froze.
Then they said:
You have been noticed by Hachishakusama.
How People Say You Can Escape Her
In the legend, the most effective way to escape Hachishakusama is to leave the area where you saw her as quickly as possible.
If you cannot leave right away, the story says to prepare a room completely sealed off from the outside. Place salt in the four corners of the room and put protective talismans on the walls.
Even if you hear the voice of a family member calling from outside, you must not open the door. You are supposed to stay inside until morning.
When dawn comes, you get into a car, avoid looking outside, and leave the area. After that, you must never return to that town again.
Of course, this is part of the folklore and internet legend surrounding Hachishakusama. If you are traveling in Japan and hear stories tied to a real neighborhood or rural area, do not enter private property, abandoned buildings, shrines, or restricted sites without permission.
Is Hachishakusama Sealed Away?
According to one version of the legend, Hachishakusama is sealed in place by several Jizo statues, which prevents her from leaving a certain region.
The place where she is said to be sealed is rumored to be Hachakudo in Aomori Prefecture. The surrounding area is said to use the place name Hachaku, and one theory claims that Hachishakusama’s name may come from that regional name.
There are also said to be several people in the area with the surname Hachaku.
These details are part of the rumor and should be treated as local legend, not confirmed fact. If visiting any rural religious site, be respectful, avoid disturbing statues or offerings, and follow local rules.
Reported Sightings
Hachishakusama is often said to be seen in the Tohoku region of northeastern Japan.
One report describes a tall woman sticking her head out from behind a wall in a residential area. She was supposedly smiling in a disturbing way while murmuring Hachishakusama’s signature sound:
Poppo… popopo…
There are also claims that she was seen as recently as 2013.
A Famous Entertainer’s Story
The Japanese comedian Yuriyan Retriever has also said she may have seen Hachishakusama.
According to the story, she went cherry-blossom viewing with three senior colleagues, four people in total. On the way, they stopped to buy supplies at a supermarket and passed through a park.
There, behind a slide, she saw a woman standing alone.
The woman’s shoulders and upper body were visible above the slide. At her feet, Yuriyan saw what looked like a white skirt, and the woman had long hair. For some reason, she seemed to be hopping up and down in place.
After they reached the supermarket, Yuriyan asked her senior colleagues about it. They said they had not seen anything.
This was strange because, from the direction they had been walking, the woman should have been clearly visible to everyone. She was also said to be around 180 centimeters tall, so she should have stood out.
Later, when Yuriyan told the story at a ghost-story event, an expert reportedly told her, “That may have been Hachishakusama.”
Hachishakusama is often said to be visible only to men, but this story suggests that women may be able to see her too.
Common Features of Hachishakusama
Hachishakusama has been described in different ways, but the most common traits include:
- She is unusually tall, around 180 to over 200 centimeters.
- She wears something on her head, such as a hat.
- She behaves strangely or unnaturally.
- She makes an eerie sound, often written as po, poppo, or popopo.
- She has an unsettling smile.

封印されている場所は 青森県の八尺堂 といわれています。封印されている地域の名前が八尺という地名が使われていて、一説によると八尺様の名前の由来は地域名から来ているといわれています。その地域には、八尺という苗字の人がい複数いるそうです。あの有名人も目撃していた。。東北地方で多く目撃されていて、住宅街の堀から頭を出し、八尺様特有の不気味な声「ぽっぽっぽ、ぽぽぽ」とつぶやき、不気味な笑みを浮かべていたという情報がありました。最近では2013年にも目撃されたそうです。
あの有名芸能人「ゆりやんレトリィバァ」も八尺様を目撃しているのです。先輩3人計4人でお花見に行くことになり、スーパーに買い出しに向かっている時に公園を横切りました。すると、滑り台の裏に一人女の人がたっているのが見えました。滑り台から肩の上がはみ出ていて、足元は白いスカートで髪の毛はロングだったそうです。なぜかその場でピョンピョンと飛んでいたそうです。スーパーにつき先輩に聞いてみたが、先輩たちは何も見ていなかったそうです。向かう方向的に絶対に視界に入るためみんなが見えていてもおかしくはないし、身長も180cmくらいだったため大きさ的にも見えていたはずだったそうです。
