Old Otori Tunnel: A Haunted Road Legend in Tsuruoka, Yamagata

Aomori’s Tomb of Christ: The Strange Backstory Behind Japan’s Jesus Legend
目次

English Version

The Old Otori Tunnel in Otori, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, is tied to a quiet but unsettling local rumor: the spirit of a worker who died is said to appear there.

The story is often mentioned together with the nearby Arasawa Dam. During construction work in 1955, it is said that many people lost their lives. Because of that history, some locals associate the area around the old tunnel with the presence of the dead.

The tunnel is located along Yamagata Prefectural Route 349, in a mountainous area that can be difficult to access depending on weather and road conditions. If you go looking for the atmosphere of the legend, do so safely: stay on public roads, obey closures and signs, and never enter restricted or unstable structures.
