In a rural town in Fukushima Prefecture stands a large abandoned apartment building that is no longer in use. Known as the “Red Room,” it has long been described by local ghost-story fans as one of Fukushima’s most frightening haunted spots, with numerous alleged paranormal reports attached to it.
What Is the Red Room?
The Red Room is an abandoned apartment building in Kanda-nishi, Yabuki Town, Nishishirakawa District, Fukushima Prefecture. It is said to have been a three-story apartment block with room for 12 households, and residents were reportedly confirmed to have lived there until the 1990s.
The nickname “Red Room” is said to come from the eerie sight of red blinds visible in the window frame of an upper-floor room. In the past, it was a well-known haunted location in Fukushima. Today, however, the building is strictly managed by its owner, and all rooms are locked.
This is private, managed property. Entering without permission or taking items from the site is illegal and can result in legal penalties.
Rumors Surrounding the Red Room
According to local rumors, a family once lived on an upper floor of the apartment. The crying of their child allegedly caused a man living on the floor below to suffer a nervous breakdown, and he is said to have died by suicide.
After that, the family reportedly began receiving silent phone calls. As the calls continued, the rumor says the family also became mentally unstable. In one version of the story, the entire family later died in a family suicide or murder-suicide. These are rumors, and the details have not been confirmed.
Reported Paranormal Phenomena
The room known as the Red Room is said to be located in an upper corner of the building, and some versions of the story claim it was the room where the rumored family lived.
Reported phenomena include:
- When people look into a three-sided mirror inside the room, an unknown person appears in the reflection.
- A black rotary phone rings, even though the building is not supposed to have electricity.
Outside of the ghost stories, other rooms reportedly still contain everyday items such as futons, washbasins, and VHS tapes. Because these belongings were left behind, some people speculate that the residents may have left for a reason other than a normal move.
Inside the rumored Red Room itself, the interior is said to be badly charred, suggesting that a fire may have occurred there. The upper part of the entrance door is darkened, and the white-painted interior walls are also blackened with soot. Most of the room appears to have burned, yet items such as dishes and scraps of paper—seemingly from the time when people lived there—still give the space an unsettling sense of daily life interrupted.
Interestingly, the red blinds that supposedly gave the Red Room its name could not be found from either the outside or the inside. Today, there seems to be no trace of them. Were they destroyed in the fire? That remains part of the mystery.
Other Haunted Spots in Fukushima
Fukushima Prefecture is home to several other places often mentioned in local ghost stories.
Takakonuma Greenland is said to be associated with rumors of hearing a woman’s voice, and some claim that visiting at night can drive people into a panic.
The so-called Ghost Pension is tied to a grim rumor that the owner died by suicide in the basement, and that his wife, after witnessing it, lost her mind and killed their son. As with many haunted-place stories, these claims are unverified rumors.

The Red Room is an abandoned apartment building in Kanda-nishi, Yabuki Town, Nishishirakawa District, Fukushima Prefecture. A local elementary school is said to be nearby, and the building is reportedly along a school route.

。噂では、このアパートの上階に住んでいた家族の子供の泣き声が原因で、下の階に住む男性が ノイローゼになってしまい自殺 したと言われています。それ以降、 その家族のもとに無言電話がかかってくるようになり、次第にその家族もノイローゼになり壊れてしまい、一説では一家心中を遂げた と噂されているのです。「赤い部屋」の心霊現象。「赤い部屋」はそのアパートの上階の角に存在し、その部屋に噂となった一家が住んでたと言われています。心霊現象① 部屋の中にある三面鏡を覗くと知らない人も映る。
心霊現象② 電気は通っていないはずなのに、黒電話が鳴る。心霊現象とは他に、「赤い部屋」とは別の部屋には布団や洗面器、VHSなどの生活用品などが残っていることから、 引っ越しではない何らかの理由により部屋を出て行った と考えられます。そして、噂の「赤い部屋」の内部は、 真っ黒焦げの状態で火事があったこととが推測 されます。入り口の扉上部は黒くくすんでおり、内部の白く塗装された壁も黒くくすんでいます。おそらく火災によって、ほとんどが燃えてしまっているのですが、当時のものと思われる食器や紙切れなどが生活感をにおわせているのがまた不気味です。
そして、 肝心な「赤い部屋」の名前の由来となった赤いブランドなのですが、外側からも内側からも見つけることはできません でした。現在は赤いブラインドの存在はなく、この火事によって燃えてしまったのでしょうか？。福島県の心霊スポットは。福島県の心霊スポット 高子沼グリーンランド 。女性の声が聞こえたり、夜に行くと発狂したりすると言われている・・・。福島県の心霊スポット 幽霊ペンション 。このペンションにてオーナーが地下室で自殺し、それを見て狂った妻が自分の息子を殺すという噂がある。
