Humans spend about one-third of their lives asleep. Some people may even think, “Honestly, I sleep more than that.” And when we sleep, we dream.
Dreams can be strange, impossible, funny, frightening, or strangely revealing. Sometimes they seem to reflect our wishes. Sometimes people say they show what is hidden deep in the subconscious. Among all the dreams we have, this article focuses on two especially mysterious kinds: precognitive dreams and “true dreams,” or dreams that appear to come true.
Have you ever had one?
What are precognitive dreams and true dreams?
In Japanese, the terms often used are yochimu, meaning a dream that predicts the future, and masayume, meaning a dream that becomes reality. They are often used in similar ways: something seen in a dream later happens in real life.
A precognitive dream tends to sound more spiritual or dramatic. People often use the term when talking about major incidents, accidents, disasters, or big events that someone supposedly foresaw in a dream.
A true dream, on the other hand, often feels smaller and more personal. It may be used when something from an ordinary dream quietly appears in daily life: a conversation, an outfit, a meal, or a scene you feel you have already seen.
Dreams are said to be influenced by desire and the subconscious, which is why dream interpretation and dream diagnosis remain popular. A dream is, in a sense, the most private world we have. But can that private world really show us something from the waking world before it happens?
“I had a dream that came true”
If you talk with friends or family long enough, you may hear someone say, “Actually, I once had a dream that came true.” The scale of these dreams varies widely, but stories of precognitive dreams and true dreams are surprisingly common.
You may hear claims that someone recorded dreams that seemed to predict the September 11 attacks in New York. You may also hear rumors that, days before Mount Ontake erupted in Japan, someone had dreamed of a volcanic eruption. Whether or not such stories can be proven, they may feel familiar because many people have had at least one dream that seemed too close to reality to dismiss.
Here are a few accounts from people who say they experienced this kind of dream.
The first story comes from a female university student. According to her, she had always felt she had a slightly sharp “sixth sense.” After entering university, however, she began having true dreams much more often.
The dreams themselves were not dramatic. She would dream of chatting with friends on campus or eating a meal. But when she remembered the details clearly, especially the conversation, the exact same scene would usually happen the next day.
She says the clothing worn by friends and teachers, the words people said, and even the type of lunch being eaten would match the dream. Sometimes it was enough to make her shiver.
“For now, they’re only dreams about daily life, so it’s fine,” she said. “But what if someday I dream about an accident or something terrible, and that becomes real?”
The next account is larger in scale. It comes from a man who says he had true dreams often as a child, and that the frequency has increased recently.
His dreams are about natural disasters. In the dream, he is sitting in his living room watching television coverage: flooded roads, rescue operations, and members of the Self-Defense Forces helping people.
Then, about a week later, he says he often sees the same kind of scene on the actual news.
At first, he wondered if he was imagining the connection. So he began writing down his dreams immediately after waking. When he checked later, he found that quite a few seemed to match real events, which frightened him.
“Even if I can peek at a future I can’t do anything about, it only scares me,” he said.
Spiritual abilities like precognitive dreams may sound convenient at first. But if the dream concerns a disaster or something beyond your control, knowing about it may bring only anxiety.
A charm to keep a bad dream from coming true
Whether or not you believe in precognitive dreams, most people have had a nightmare they did not want to become real. In Japanese folk belief, there is a simple way to keep a bad dream from manifesting.
Tell someone about it.
If you have a disturbing dream, it is said that you should talk about it with another person, even casually: “I had this awful dream, and I really hope it doesn’t come true.” According to the belief, speaking the dream aloud can help prevent it from becoming reality.
Of course, from a practical point of view, this also makes sense. Talking about fear can relieve stress. And once you say what you are afraid of, you may unconsciously take steps to avoid that outcome. In other words, if a dream is weighing on you, it may be better to share it than to sit alone with the fear.
That said, people who claim to have especially intense precognitive dreams sometimes say this kind of charm does not always work.
So, are these dreams real?
Precognitive dreams and true dreams are often treated as one of the most familiar forms of the supernatural. But when you listen to people who say they experience them, it can sound less exciting and more unsettling.
Would you want to see the future in a dream?
If you could glimpse what was coming, what would you do?
If you ever have a bad dream that lingers in your mind, it may help to tell someone and release that energy. That does not guarantee the dream will be avoided, but it may at least keep you from carrying the fear alone.
Precognitive dreams, true dreams, and omens
Stories about dreams that seem to predict reality are common. Similar experiences are sometimes described as omens or gut feelings, even when they do not happen during sleep.
The writer of the original article also recalls a strange experience from around the time the movie Ring became popular. While watching the VHS version of Ring, they later dreamed that the “cursed videotape” scene was playing on a television screen.
For some reason, their body was frozen in sleep paralysis, so they realized, “This is a dream.” But the instant they jolted awake and looked at the television, the exact same scene began playing.
Nothing like Sadako appearing in the room happened, but the timing was eerie enough to leave a lasting chill.
The famous psychic Edgar Cayce is also said to have studied precognitive dreams. Whether taken as supernatural signs, coincidences, or reflections of the subconscious, these stories continue to fascinate people who are drawn to the border between dreams and reality.
