Inunaki Pass in Fukuoka Prefecture is widely known among horror fans as one of the area’s most notorious haunted spots. The pass connects Hisayama Town and Miyawaka City, so it is also a road with regular traffic, not just a place from ghost stories.
Over the years, many young people and paranormal enthusiasts have gone there looking for fear and thrills. The old Inunaki Tunnel in particular has become famous nationwide through rumors, legends, and reports of strange experiences.
The following are stories said to have happened around Inunaki Pass. As always with haunted places, treat local roads, tunnels, dams, and bridges with caution and respect. Do not enter closed-off areas, trespass, or visit unsafe locations at night for a dare.
The Message on the Car Stereo
This happened more than ten years ago.
A university student and three friends drove to the old tunnel at Inunaki Pass late at night for a test of courage. They were riding in a beat-up compact car the student had bought with money from a part-time job.
One of their classmates, a girl who was said to have a little spiritual sensitivity, tried to stop them.
“You shouldn’t go to that pass,” she warned.
But they were young, excited, and unwilling to back down. The four of them headed into the mountains after midnight.
To reach the old road, they had to turn off before entering the tunnel currently in use. Beyond that turnoff, there were no streetlights. Everything was pitch-black.
Even if it had not been known as a haunted place, the darkness alone would have made it feel unsettling.
One of the four, the driver, finally said, “This really seems bad. I’m staying here.”
He remained in the car while the other three decided to go into the old tunnel, walk all the way to the other side, and come back.
The student left behind told them not to go, but they went anyway.
Sitting alone in the dark, he started to feel scared. To distract himself, he put a CD into the car stereo and played cheerful music at high volume.
After a while, just as he thought, “They should be coming back soon,” he heard something from the direction of the tunnel.
It was a scream.
Not even a proper scream, but a raw, panicked sound: “Aaaah!”
He grabbed a flashlight and was about to run toward the tunnel to help them. At that exact moment, the loud music suddenly stopped.
Startled, he looked at the stereo display.
It showed:
01:97 Re
Normally, the seconds on a playback timer should only run from 00 to 59. But the display read 01:97.
And then there was “Re.”
In Japanese number wordplay, 1-9-7 can be read as a warning meaning “don’t go.” The “Re” looked like “return.”
In other words, the display seemed to be saying: Don’t go. Return.
He was so shocked that he could not look away from the screen. Then, as suddenly as it had changed, the display went back to normal and the music started playing again.
Soon after, the three who had entered the tunnel came running back.
Two of them were frantic, shouting, “Hurry! Start the car! Go!”
The third barely spoke at all on the way back.
They rushed down the mountain and stopped at a convenience store. The two panicked students bought salt and began throwing it over themselves. The quiet one, for some reason, bought milk and drank it greedily.
Later, they explained what had happened inside the tunnel.
One of the three had been walking at the back of the group. Suddenly, he crouched down and refused to move. When the others tried to force him back onto his feet, his face changed into a terrifying expression.
“Why did you come here?” he shouted.
This shocked them because he was usually a calm, gentle classmate. They started running. Then, according to them, he grabbed a large wooden stick and chased after them.
They ran desperately for the entrance.
But when they got out, the classmate who should have been chasing them was lying collapsed at the tunnel entrance behind them.
After that night, misfortune reportedly followed the three who had entered the tunnel. The two who had been panicking fell ill one after another and were hospitalized. The one who had collapsed at the entrance was later injured in a traffic accident, and his motorcycle was stolen as well.
When the student finally got home, he emailed the spiritually sensitive classmate who had warned them not to go.
Her reply was chilling:
“I knew it. That’s why I told you: 197.”
The Bridge at Inunaki Dam
The old Inunaki Tunnel is nationally famous as a haunted spot, but there is also a bridge on the Miyawaka City side, on the way up toward the tunnel area. It is said that some people have jumped from this bridge.
One day, a carpenter was driving home after finishing work at a job site. As he approached the bridge near Inunaki Dam, he noticed something lying near the edge of the bridge, lit by a streetlamp.
Thinking someone might have dropped something, he crossed the bridge, parked near the foot of it, and walked back to see what it was.
There, he found a pair of sneakers he recognized.
They were red sneakers, just like the ones worn by a man he knew.
“Why would these be here?” he wondered.
Then he looked down from the bridge.
Far below, caught in the trees, he saw something pale blue and human-shaped. It appeared to be the man he knew, wearing light blue clothing.
At that moment, as he looked over the edge, he felt a sudden wave of dizziness. He described it as feeling as if something were trying to pull him in.
Just then, by chance, his wife called his phone. The sound snapped him back to himself.
Afterward, he called the police. The body was recovered the next morning, and the case was treated as a suicide.
The man had a family. There was reportedly no suicide note. He had debts, but only ordinary ones: a car loan and a home loan. His life appeared normal.
Why he jumped from the bridge remains unknown.
A Place to Treat With Respect
Many horror fans hear the words “haunted spot” and feel the urge to go see it for themselves. But some places carry real danger, whether spiritual, psychological, environmental, or legal.
If you are interested in the occult, that is all the more reason to approach these places with understanding and respect. Do not treat them as playgrounds. Do not disturb local communities, damage property, enter sealed tunnels, or put yourself and others at risk for a thrill.
Stories like the university students at the old tunnel, or the man at the bridge, are part of why Inunaki Pass remains surrounded by fear.
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, places like this can be dark, isolated, and dangerous. Go only where access is legal and safe, and never visit a haunted spot half-jokingly or with the intent to provoke whatever may be there.

。公開日：2019年9月17日 更新日：2020年1月13日 。車のオーディオが示したメッセージ。。今からもう10年以上前の話です。。ある大学生が友達と4人で、バイトしてかったボロボロの軽自動車に乗って犬鳴峠の旧トンネルに肝試しに向かったんです。その男子学生の同級生にはちょっとだけ霊感がある女の子がいたんですが、その子は「 あの峠には行かないほうがいいよ 」と止めたのですが、若さの勢いで4人は深夜の犬鳴峠に向かいます。。旧道に向かうには、今使用されているトンネルに入る前にある分岐点を曲がる訳です…当然、その分岐点の向こうは街灯もなく真っ暗。
ここが心霊スポットではなかったとしても、暗くて不気味な感じです。。車を運転していた1人は「 ちょっまじでやばそうだから俺はやめとくよ 」と言って車に残りました。そして、 他の3人は犬鳴峠旧道のトンネルに中に入って、反対側まで行ってから戻ってくる …というのです。。運転席に残された子は「やめとけよ」と行ったのですが、3人は行ってしまいます。真っ暗な中で怖くなったその大学生は、車のオーディオにCDを入れて陽気な音楽で気持ちを紛わそうとしました。
「そろそろ帰ってくる頃かな…」と思った時に、トンネルの方から。「ギャーーー」 という声にならない叫び声が聞こえたそう。。慌てて懐中電灯を持って助けに行こうとしたときに突如、大音量が流していた音楽がピタッと止まったんです。驚いてオーディオをみると。再生時間 01:97 Re 。分の表示は通常なら0～59までのハズ…。なのに 01:97と表示されていたのです。そして、Re…。つまり 【イクナ】【リターン】ということ…。。びっくりしてオーディオ画面から目を離せないでいると、いつもの表記に戻ってまた音楽が流れ出したのです。
その後すぐ、トンネルに入った3人が帰ってきました。2人は慌てた様子で「 はやくっ早く車をだせっ 」というばかり、そして、もう1人は帰り道ほとんど言葉を発しなくなってました。。慌てて山を下りて、コンビニに言ったそう…。ですが、 慌てていた2人は塩を購入して自らにかけまくり、黙ってしまったもう1人はなぜか牛乳を買ってがばがば飲んでいた のです。後で話しを聞くと、トンネルの中で最後尾にいた1人が突然しゃがみこんで歩かなくなったので、無理やり立たせようとしたらすごい形相で「 なぜここに来た！
」と怒鳴ったそう。いつもは温厚な同級生の変わりっぷりにびっくりして走り出すと、大きな木の棒を持って追いかけてきたそうで…必死で逃げて入り口から出たら、後ろから追いかけていたハズの同級生が入り口で倒れていたというんです。その後、トンネルに入った3人のうち、慌てていた2人は立て続けに病気になって入院、もう1人の入り口で倒れていた子は交通事故にあって怪我をした上にバイクを盗まれてしまいました。慌てて部屋まで戻って、霊感のある同級生にメールをしたら「 やっぱりね、だから197って言ったのに 」との返事がきたのです…。
犬鳴ダムの橋。。。旧犬鳴トンネルが心霊スポットだということは全国的に有名ですが、宮若市側から犬鳴トンネル登る途中にある橋…ここから飛びおりてしまう人もいるのです。あるとき、現場での仕事を終えて帰宅の戸についた大工さんが、犬鳴ダムの橋に差し掛かった時の事、街灯に照らされる橋の隅に何かが置いてあるのを見つけました。。誰かの落とし物かと思って、一旦橋を渡ってから車を橋の袂に止め、何かが落ちていたところまで歩いていきます。そうすると、そこには見覚えのあるスニーカーが置いてあったそうで…よく見てみると知り合いが履いている 赤いスニーカー だったんです。
「 なんでこんなところに 」と思ってふと橋の下を見ると。その知り合いの男性がはるか下の木に、 水色の服 と人らしき何かが引っ掛っているのが見えたそう…。。そして、橋から下を覗き込んだ時に一瞬「 引っ張り込まれるような 」めまいがしたといいます。ただ、そのときにたまたま奥さんから電話がかかってきたそうで、我に返った…と。そのあと、警察を呼び翌朝になってから遺体が回収され、自殺として処理されました。その男性には家族もいて、特に遺書もなかったそう。
