Oshikado Tunnel, located in Okawa, Iwaizumi Town, Shimohei District, Iwate Prefecture, is associated with several unsettling local rumors.
People say that simply approaching the area can bring on headaches or nausea. Other stories claim that the ghost of someone who died by suicide after setting a car on fire appears there. Another rumor speaks of the spirits of a couple who died by drowning suicide.
The tunnel is connected with Oshikado Pass, a rugged mountain route known for its many steep slopes. Construction through this difficult terrain is said to have been extremely hard.
There is also a darker rumor: that Korean laborers were forced into severe working conditions during the construction, and that those who collapsed were buried as human pillars. As with many tunnel legends, this story is passed down as rumor rather than confirmed fact.
If you visit the area, treat it as a real mountain road, not just a ghost spot. Avoid entering restricted or unsafe places, do not stop in dangerous traffic areas, and be especially cautious at night or in bad weather.
