Who Was John von Neumann?
John von Neumann was a mathematician from Hungary in Central Europe.
He was born in 1903 and died of cancer on February 8, 1957. It is often said that his illness may have been connected to his involvement in atomic bomb testing through the Manhattan Project, though accounts of the exact cause are usually treated with caution.
Because he lived in the modern era and published several books himself, von Neumann is not exactly a mysterious historical figure. The strange part is that many of the stories about him do not need much exaggeration to sound unbelievable.

At age 6, von Neumann could reportedly divide eight-digit numbers. In Japan, children usually begin learning division around age 8.
At age 8, he had mastered differential and integral calculus, which is generally high-school-level material.
At age 12, he read through a textbook on complex analysis, also known as function theory, which is university-level mathematics.
At age 17, he wrote his first paper, “On the Zeros of Certain Minimal Polynomials and Transfinite Diameter.” It was published in a journal of the German Mathematical Society.
At age 30, he became a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. One of the other members was the famous Albert Einstein.
He was said to play a “game” in which he instantly added up all the numbers printed in a telephone directory.
He also helped formulate the basic structure and operating principles behind what is now called the von Neumann architecture—the foundation of modern computers.
Economic Talent
Von Neumann helped establish the foundations of game theory, a field that later produced many Nobel Prize winners in economics.
Language Talent
At age 6, he had learned Greek well enough to tell jokes in it.
He was also said to be able to recite a 44-volume world history set and novels by Goethe word for word without making a mistake.
Meteorological Talent
Von Neumann was among the first to use mathematical models and computers for weather forecasting.
