不老不死。しれは人類が追い求めている夢であり、実現不可能とされているものです。しかし、ある細胞が発見されたとともに遠い未来ではないとされているのです。今回は、 不死の細胞と不老不死のリスクについて 紹介したいと思います。1951 年の出来こと 。ヘンリエッタ・ラックスという女性の子宮にできたガンの治療のために、一部の細胞を取り出しました。しかし、治療は間に合わなくヘンリエッタ・ラックスは 31 歳という若さで亡くなってしまうのでした。亡くなっても細胞だけは研究の材料にしようと密に保管されていました。
ある日、保管されている細胞に不可解な動きをしているのを発見しました。通常体から切り離された細胞を徐々に死滅していくはずなのだが、この細胞はなんと増殖を始めたのです。もちろん増殖にも限界があります。なぜなら、人間の寿命にも関係しているからです。しかし、この細胞はそんなことはお構いなしに増殖の勢いは止まらず、増殖し続けたのです。ということは不老不死ということは遠い未来の話ではないということです。不死の細胞のその後 。。ヘンリエッタ・ラックスから採取されたこの細胞は、「 HeLa 細胞」と名付けられました。
この特性を生かして世界中で研究の材料として用いられました。その結果、様々な病気の治療法を確立することができたのでした。この細胞は現在でも使用されていて、かなりの高額で取引されているそうです。さらに、ヘンリエッタ・ラックスの人生について書かれた著書や映画まで公開されています。・ HeLa 細胞についての噂 。。アメリカのとある資産家はこの HeLa 細胞を若返りの薬と信じて、年間数百万ドルという大金を払って購入しているそうです。ある意味ヘンリエッタは不老不死となって世界中に現在でも広がっているのです。
不老不死のリスク 。。不老不死は死よりも恐ろしいとされているのです。精神的に老いていく。体は年を取りませんが、精神的には確実に年老いていくそうです。コンピュータと同じで脳が記憶できる容量は限られています。生き続けるため常に記憶する必要があります。いずれ容量オーバーを起こし脳の動きが遅くなってしまいます。食糧問題や人口増加問題。不老不死が可能になればたくさんの人が不老不死になりたがります。現在でも人口増加が問題視されている現代に人間が死ななくなってしまえば、さらに人口が増え続け、人間が地球では暮らせなくなってしまいます。
資源は有限であり、奪い合いが発生する可能性も低くはありません。精神崩壊が起きる。人間は暇を感じる生き物です。何年、何千年、何百万年も生きていくのは精神的につらいものです。もちろん不老不死を楽しむ人間もいるかもしれませんが、すべての人がそういうわけではないと思います。人間は生きていく中で、努力や達成感を感じることによって生きる意味を見出せているのではないかと思います。しかし、不老不死になることによって生きる意味を見出せなくなり、最終的に精神が崩壊し、廃人と化した人間になってしまうのかもしれません。
