Have you ever gone mountain climbing? Maybe you climbed a small mountain on a school trip, or maybe hiking is one of your hobbies. When people think of dangerous high mountains, names like Everest, where bodies have reportedly become landmarks, K2, one of the world’s hardest peaks, and Annapurna, known for its high fatality rate, often come up.
And yet, all of those mountains were first summited decades ago.
Even today, there are still mountains on Earth where no human being is known to have stood on the summit. These are called unclimbed peaks.
What Is an Unclimbed Peak?
An unclimbed peak is not simply a mountain that is “too high.” Every 8,000-meter peak on Earth, including Mount Everest, has already been climbed. K2 is the only 8,000-meter peak that has not been summited in winter, but because people have reached its top in other seasons, it is not considered unclimbed.
Still, there are mountains whose summits remain untouched by recorded human history.
They are not necessarily deep ocean trenches or erupting volcanoes. They are on land, visible on maps, and yet no one has successfully reached their highest point. In an age of synthetic fabrics, advanced climbing gear, satellite images, and modern expedition planning, that can feel strangely hard to believe.
If you include little-known and unnamed mountains, the number of unclimbed peaks is said to be countless. Some of the better-known examples include:
- Machapuchare — 6,993 m
- Gangkhar Puensum — 7,570 m
- Meili Snow Mountain — 6,740 m
- Mount Kailash — 6,656 m
- Zanskar — 6,045 m
- Kyungari — 6,599 m
- Muchu Chhish — 7,452 m
There are many more besides these.
Meili Snow Mountain, a beautiful sacred mountain in Tibet, has appeared on occult and mystery sites before. At under 7,000 meters, it may not look impossible compared with the world’s highest peaks. But it is known for a tragic accident in which an avalanche struck a final camp only a few hundred meters below the summit, wiping out the climbing party.
For some adventurers, the idea of stepping on snow and earth that no one has ever touched may be irresistible. But the reasons these peaks remain unclimbed are often complicated.
Why Some Peaks Remain Unclimbed
There are many reasons a mountain can remain unclimbed.
The 8,000-meter peaks were climbed relatively early partly because there are only 14 of them in the world. They became famous objectives, attracting climbers and alpinists from around the globe. By comparison, there are far more 7,000-meter and 6,000-meter mountains, including many obscure peaks that receive little attention.
But the highest mountain often described as an unclimbed peak is not obscure at all: Gangkhar Puensum, the highest mountain in Bhutan. At 7,570 meters, it may fall short of 8,000 meters, but it is still an enormous mountain.
The strange part is that the highest peak of an entire country remains unclimbed.
The reason is that Gangkhar Puensum is not open for climbing. For many people in Bhutan, the mountain is an object of religious reverence. Bhutan briefly opened mountaineering in 1983, and four expeditions attempted the mountain, but only subsidiary peaks were reached.
Rising near the border area between Bhutan and Tibet, Gangkhar Puensum is famous as one of the world’s highest unclimbed mountains. It is protected by faith, and there is also uncertainty over exactly which country the true summit belongs to. In other words, even the maps are not completely clear. It remains, in a sense, an unexplored place.
Travelers should also remember that sacred mountains and restricted regions are not adventure playgrounds. If climbing is prohibited or permits are not granted, those rules should be respected.
Sacred Mountains and Blank Spaces on the Map
Mount Kailash is another famous unclimbed peak, also revered as a sacred mountain. There are legends that a legendary figure once climbed it, but aside from such stories, it is generally regarded as unclimbed.
Machapuchare stands near Annapurna, the mountain known for its high fatality rate. Machapuchare is also sacred, and climbing to its summit is prohibited.
Then there are places like Zanskar, Kyungari, and Muchu Chhish, where information itself becomes scarce.
Kyungari lies deep in the Himalayas. It is not just that no one has summited it; routes to even reach the mountain are said to be undeveloped. It is described as such an untouched area that even local people may not know a practical way to approach it. Beyond that unknown terrain rises a 6,000-meter-class peak.
Kyungari is part of the Himalayan range, with Manaslu not far away, and yet it remains unclimbed. Will someone stand on its summit someday? No one can say.
A World Still Unknown
Unclimbed peaks are reminders that even on the surface of the Earth, there are still places where no one is known to have stood.
Some remain untouched because they are sacred. Others are protected by weather, terrain, remoteness, avalanches, or sheer lack of information. Thinking about these mountains, it is hard not to feel that the world still hides many things humanity has yet to understand.

つまり、 人類がまだ「誰も足を踏み入れたことがない場所」 があるんです。深海だとか、危険な火山というわけではなくても登られていない山。登れない山があるのはなんとなく不思議な気もしてきますよね。だって、陸地なのに…化学繊維やクライミングギアが発展した減退でも登れないんですから…。未踏峰は無名の山々を入れると数えきれないほどありますが、主な山をチェックしてみましょう。・マチャプチャレ 6,993m。・ガンケルプンスム 7,570 m。・梅里雪山 6,740m。

標高は7000メートル以下ですし、天候が良ければ登れで不思議ではないのですが、 頂上からわずか数百メートルの最終キャンプ地を雪崩が襲い、登山隊壁全滅するという痛ましい事故が起きた ことでも知られています。他にも伝説的な人物を除いて、まだ誰も登っていない高山がこんなに地球上には残されているんです。誰も踏んだことがない土を雪を踏みしめたい…そんな冒険家もいることでしょう。未踏峰になる理由は実に様々…宗教的な理由も…。。未踏峰として山が残される理由は実に様々です。
8000メートル峰は地球上の14座しかないということもあって、早くから多くのクライマーやアルピニストが挑戦してきたので、早く登頂がなされたというのもひとつの事実です。8000メートル峰と比べて7000メートル峰や6000メートル峰はその数が多く、無名の山々も多いのです。ですが、未踏峰の中で最も標高が高いといわれている、ガンカープンスムは、 ブータン最高峰の山 です。8000メートルには届かないものの高さも7570メートルとなかなかのもの・・。
ましてや、 ひとつの国の最高峰が未だに未踏峰 というのはなんとなく違和感があるのではないでしょうか。実はガンカープンスムは、 登頂の許可が降りない山 なのです。ブータンの人にとって、この山は信仰の対象になっています。1983年にブータンは一度、登山を解禁したのですが、その際に4つの遠征隊が結成されましたが、登頂できたのは衛星峰のみでした。チベットとブータンにまたがるようにそびえるこの山は、世界で一番高い未踏峰としてとても有名…。信仰対象なので、登れないというのも事実ですが、 頂上がどちらの国に属しているのかが実は微妙…つまり地図もハッキリしない未開の地なのです。
。未踏峰として有名なカイラスも信仰の対象となっている山で、ここに伝説的な人物が登頂したという伝説があるのみです。。マチャプチャレは死亡率が高いあの山…アンナプルナの近くにある高山です。ここも信仰の対象になっているため登頂は禁止されています。そして、ザンスカールやキュンガリ、ムチュ・チシに至っては、もう 情報がほとんどない状況 です。ヒマラヤの奥地にあるキュンガリは登頂どころか、山にたどり着くルートすらも開拓されていないんです。地元の人でも、山に近づくルートを知らない未開の地…その先にそびえる6000メートル級の山 ということになります。
キュンガリはヒマラヤ山脈の一角で、近くにはマナスルもあるわけですが、キュンガリが未踏峰のまま…。いつか誰かが登頂するのでしょうか…。まとめ。未踏峰…同じ地上でありながら誰もその場所に立ったことがない頂が世界にはまだたくさん残されています。信仰の対象になっていたり、気候や山の形状で登山が困難だったりといろいろの理由があるわけです。こう考えてみると、人類が知らないものがまだまだ地球上にはたくさん隠されているのかもしれません。。ライター。Miiko 福岡県在住フリーライター
