Among cryptids—often called UMA in Japan, short for “unidentified mysterious animals”—few are as famous as Nessie. The legendary creature of Scotland’s Loch Ness has appeared in countless photos, reports, and rumors over the years. Quite a few of those “proofs” have later been exposed as fakes, and the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre even explains how some famous Nessie images were made.
And yet, for many believers, Nessie remains one of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century. In October 2018, a new investigation set out to test whether Nessie had ever truly existed in Loch Ness.
Searching Loch Ness Again
This was not the first attempt to investigate the monster. In 2016, for example, an unmanned submersible was sent down to a depth of about 180 meters in Loch Ness, where it reportedly filmed something that looked like Nessie.
The explanation that followed was less mysterious: it was said to be a Nessie-shaped model made as a set piece for a 1970 Sherlock Holmes-related film. Once again, the evidence failed to establish Nessie’s existence.
Then, in October 2018, a team led by Professor Neil Gemmell of the University of Otago in New Zealand began a new kind of search.
The Environmental DNA Investigation
The method was modern and scientific. The team collected DNA samples from 250 locations around Loch Ness at various depths, then analyzed the vast amount of biological material in the water—known as environmental DNA, or eDNA.
On September 5, 2019, after the investigation and analysis were complete, Professor Gemmell held a press conference to announce the results.
What did they find in Loch Ness?
A large amount of eel DNA.
Loch Ness is already known to have many eels, so one possible idea is that some eels may have grown abnormally large due to mutation or unusual development. In other words, the “monster” sightings might have been giant eels.
However, Professor Gemmell also noted that there were still many points that remained unclear. Because of that, it may be too soon to declare that Nessie’s true identity is definitely an eel. For believers, at least, there is still room for mystery.
Other Lake Monsters Around the World
Loch Ness is not the only lake with a famous monster legend. Many countries have their own Nessie-like lake cryptids. Examples include Champ, the monster said to live in Lake Champlain in the eastern United States, and Kusshie, the creature rumored to inhabit Japan’s Lake Kussharo.
Among these legends, an especially strange story about Champ was once mentioned in the Japanese occult magazine Mu.
According to that rumor, the U.S. military successfully captured Champ.
The alleged operation supposedly took place in October 2002. The story claims that Champ was lured out using the calls of humpback whales, fitted with a transmitter, and tracked back to its nest. It even says that six juveniles were captured.
The reason for using humpback whale calls is also part of the strange claim: a baby Nessie supposedly captured in Britain had reacted to humpback whale sounds.
If that story were true, it would raise an even wilder possibility—that Nessie is no longer in Loch Ness at all, but was secretly captured and kept somewhere else. Of course, this remains an occult rumor, not confirmed evidence.
The 2018–2019 Loch Ness study found a massive amount of eel DNA and raised the possibility that Nessie sightings could be linked to unusually large eels. Still, the researchers also admitted that not everything was fully explained.
Were the unknown points simply gaps in the data? Or could they hint at something that once lived there but is no longer in the lake?
For now, the mystery of Nessie has only deepened.

未確認生物、UMA。その中でも代表格といっても良いほど有名なネッシーを知らない人はいないでしょう。これまでネッシーについては数多くの写真や情報が出回っていましたが、「作り物だ」と明かされたものもこれまた少なくはありません。イギリスのネス湖 エキシビジョンセンターではそのネッシー写真の作られ方の紹介までもがされています。しかし！20世期最大のミステリーとも言われているネッシーは存在する。そう信じる人々により2018年10月にネッシーがネス湖に存在したか否かを証明する調査が行われたのです。
ネス湖にて行われたネッシー調査。。これまでもネッシーに関する調査が行われた事はありました。例えば2016年。この年にはネス湖の水深180メートルにまで無人潜水艇を向かわせたところネッシーのような何かを撮影したそうです。ですがこの発表に対して返ってきた答えは「シャーロックホームズの傍系」という1970年の映画のセットとして作られたネッシー型の模型というもの。ネッシーの存在を確立する事はできませんてました。そして2018年10月、ニュージーランド・オタゴ大学のニール・ゲメル教授らのチームが新たな方法で調査に踏み切りました。
それは、「ネス湖を様々な水深で計250ヶ所にてDNAサンプルを採取し、ネス湖の水中に存在する膨大な生物由来のDNA（環境DNA）を分析するという近代的なものだったのです。研究チームが出した結論とは。。調査・解析が終了した2019年9月5日にゲメル教授によって記者会見が行われました。その発表によると、なんとネス湖から発見されたのは「大量のうなぎのDNA」だったのです。元々ネス湖にはうなぎが非常に多く生息しているので、うなぎの中の一部が突然変異などにより異常な成長を遂げて巨大化した可能性も考えられるそう。
ですが今回の結果において教授はよく分からない点も多く存在しているとも述べていたのでまだまだネッシーの正体がうなぎであると決めつけるには早く、希望はあると言えるでしょう。今回行われたネス湖のネッシーの調査結果は以上のようなものでしたが国ごとにその国のネッシーのような湖に生息するUMAが発見されています。例としてはアメリカ合衆国東部ジャンプレー湖の怪物チャンプ、日本の屈斜路湖に住むクッシーなどが挙げられますがその中でもチャンプについて、オカルト雑誌「ムー」では面白い話が記されていました。
それは、「アメリカ軍がチャンプの捕獲に成功した」というものです。チャンプの捕獲作戦が決行されたのは2002年10月のこと。なんとチャンプをザトウクジラの声を用いておびきだして発信器を埋め込み巣を特定することに成功。幼体を6匹捕獲することにも成功したという。この際に何故ザトウクジラの声を用いるに至ったのかについても驚くべき答えでした。その答えは、「イギリスで捕獲されたネッシーの子供がザトウクジラの声に反応した」から。という事は今ネッシーはネス湖にはおらず秘密裏に捕獲され飼育されているという可能性も浮上してきます。
確かに、今回の調査結果においてもウナギのDNAが大量に発見され、正体がウナギである可能性が挙げられているというのにまだまだ不明な点が多数あるとも述べられています。この不明な点が以前まではいたが現在は捕獲されてしまっている為なのか…まだまだ謎は深まるばかりです
