Near Kamui Kotan Tunnel, people have reported seeing the ghost of a woman with long hair.
The nearby Ishikari River is known for its powerful current, and the water is said to reach depths of around 70 meters. The name Kamui Kotan is often translated as “the place where the gods live.” According to local rumors, the spirits of those who lost their lives in the Ishikari River are drawn to this area.
The site is also said to have seen many accidents. Some people claim that the spirits of those who died by suicide call others toward the same fate, though this remains part of the area’s ghost lore rather than a confirmed fact.
One especially eerie detail appears again and again in local stories: just before a strange phenomenon occurs, a deep, bell-like sound—described as a heavy “gong”—echoes inside the tunnel. If you visit, pay attention to the sounds around you.
Kamui Kotan is located in Kamui-cho, Asahikawa, Hokkaido, along the Kamui National Road area. Travelers should use caution near the river and road, avoid entering restricted or unsafe tunnel areas, and visit only from legally accessible public spaces.
