Suzuran Park: Rumors of Crying Babies in Otofuke, Hokkaido

The Yokkaichi Jusco Mistaken Arrest Death: An Unsolved Japan Case, Part 4

English Version

Suzuran Park in Otofuke, Hokkaido, has gathered a few unsettling rumors over the years.

Some say that late at night, the sound of a baby crying can be heard somewhere in the park. Others claim they have felt something wrap itself around their legs while walking there.

On the north side of the park, many stone statues connected to memorial prayers for mizuko—children who died before birth or in infancy—are lined up together. Some of the statues are tilted so sharply that they look as if they might fall at any moment.

Could the spirits of mizuko who have not found peace still be wandering this area? That is the rumor whispered about Suzuran Park.

The park is located around Minami Suzuran Minami 3-chome, Otofuke, Kato District, Hokkaido. If you visit, be respectful of the memorial statues, avoid entering restricted or unsafe areas, and take extra care if going after dark.
