In this series, Occult Online has covered the repression of Tibetans and Uyghurs under Chinese rule. The Chinese government does not acknowledge these accusations in the way critics describe them, but survivor testimony and concerns raised by the United Nations have made the issue impossible to dismiss. And this is not only a matter of the past. Reports of abuse under the name of “education” in detention facilities, violence, confiscation, and intimidation continue to surround Tibet and the Uyghur region.

But the story does not end there. China also carried out nuclear tests on land taken from the Uyghurs.

Nuclear tests in East Turkestan

The area the Chinese government calls the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is also known by many Uyghur advocates as East Turkestan. Between 1964 and 1996, China conducted nuclear tests there.

According to the figures cited in the original article, there were 46 tests in total. Their combined yield reached 22 megatons, said to be equivalent to about 1,370 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs.

The first test was an aboveground detonation in October 1964. After that, the tests continued for decades. The final underground nuclear test was carried out in 1996.

Naturally, local residents opposed them. But their voices were not heard. One analysis has claimed that as many as one million people may have been exposed to radiation from China’s repeated nuclear testing, though the full extent of the damage has never been publicly clarified.

For a long time, the reality of China’s nuclear testing was not widely reported, including in Japan. Aboveground nuclear tests are especially dangerous because radioactive materials can spread widely and cause severe contamination.

Of course, that does not mean underground nuclear testing is safe or acceptable. But China chose to carry out high-risk aboveground tests in East Turkestan, on land taken from the Uyghur people.

Lop Nur

China’s first nuclear test site was Lop Nur, a beautiful salt-lake region in East Turkestan, now within the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Both underground and aboveground nuclear tests were carried out there, and entry was prohibited.

For travelers and dark-history enthusiasts, Lop Nur is not a casual destination. It has been connected to military restrictions and nuclear testing, and unauthorized access should not be attempted.

The exact size of China’s nuclear arsenal is not publicly known. The original article cites claims that China may possess around 3,000 nuclear weapons, referring to a Sunday Times report titled “China has up to 3,000 nukes hidden in tunnels.”

From this perspective, China strengthened its military power through nuclear development, while testing those weapons not in its political heartland, but in East Turkestan.

A shepherd’s testimony

The Japan Uyghur Association, a nonprofit organization in Japan, has published testimony from an elderly shepherd:

“He said, ‘I have seen God.’ It was a brightness one hundred times stronger than the sun. Then the ground shook violently, and a terrible storm came. Half of his body became covered in keloid scars. Soldiers took him to a hospital and examined him. Then they bought all of his sheep, more than one hundred animals. The old man died two years later.”

Reading this testimony, it is hard not to wonder whether the man had been warned about the nuclear test at all. The fact that he was taken to a hospital and that his sheep were bought afterward gives the chilling impression that not only the land, but also people and livestock, may have been treated as experimental material.

A hidden irradiated land

Japan is often described as the only country to have suffered atomic bombing in war, after Hiroshima and Nagasaki were attacked by the United States during World War II. That statement is true in the specific sense of wartime nuclear attack.

But if we speak more broadly about people and lands exposed to nuclear devastation, East Turkestan—the Uyghur homeland—can also be seen as a place that suffered radiation exposure.

If a state conducts nuclear tests on its own land and harms its own people, the responsibility is already grave. But in the Uyghur case, the land itself was taken, and then nuclear tests were carried out there 46 times.

The consequences were severe. Land, water, and air were contaminated, and some areas may have become impossible to live in. Yet the Uyghurs have not been widely recognized as victims of nuclear exposure. Their suffering continues under ongoing repression.

For Japan, a country that calls itself the only nation attacked with atomic bombs in war, this raises a difficult question: how should we remember places like East Turkestan?

Closing thoughts

Japan is often called the world’s only atomic-bombed nation. In the wartime sense, that is not wrong. But we should not forget the hidden irradiated land of East Turkestan, known today under Chinese administration as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The land was taken, nuclear tests were carried out, and the Uyghur people continue to face repression. Their history deserves far more attention.

参考資料: “China ‘has up to 3,000 nukes hidden in tunnels’-Claims three-year study of secret documents “sundaytimes 。
