Fukaya Ohashi Bridge: A Haunted Bridge Legend in Shimane

The Nine Worlds of Norse Mythology: Where Humans, Elves, Gods, and Giants Live

English Version

Fukaya Ohashi Bridge in Tanohara, Yoshika Town, Kanoashi District, Shimane Prefecture, is associated with a grim local rumor.

According to the story, if someone looks down beneath the bridge, an unseen presence may push them from behind and send them falling. Some say the spirits of people who died by suicide wander the area, searching for someone to take with them.

Near the entrance to the bridge, there is reportedly a sign for a suicide prevention hotline, often referred to in Japan as the “Inochi no Denwa,” or “Life Line.” For some visitors, that sign has become part of the bridge’s unsettling reputation, suggesting that tragedies have occurred here more than once.

As with many haunted places in Japan, the details remain in the realm of rumor and local legend. If you visit, do so safely and respectfully: do not lean over the railing, stop in dangerous areas, trespass, or visit in a way that disturbs residents or traffic.
