Deep in the mountains of Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, Yamagami Tunnel has long been known as one of the area’s most frightening haunted spots. It has appeared in paranormal TV shows and books, and locals are said to fear it as a “haunted tunnel.”
The stories around it are unusually crowded: ghost sightings, a so-called zero magnetic field where compasses stop working, rumors of murders and accidents, and even tales of people vanishing without a trace. For horror fans, it has become one of Kanagawa’s most famous occult zones.
Because this is a real mountain area and an active tunnel, visitors should be cautious: go only in daylight, stay on public paths, avoid closed or abandoned facilities, and check local conditions. The area is also known for wildlife, including boars and reported bear activity, as well as mountain leeches after rain.
Three Rumored Incidents and Accidents
Yamagami Tunnel is located along a hiking course in the mountains of Atsugi. Unlike many “haunted tunnels” in Japan, it is not fully abandoned and is still used. During the day, hikers pass through and the atmosphere may not feel especially terrifying. At night, however, very few people approach it.
Part of that is simply practical. The surrounding mountains are home to animals such as raccoon dogs and wild boars, and there are even bear warning signs in the area. Mountain leeches are also common; people say that after walking there following rain, they found their legs covered in blood.
Still, the biggest reason people avoid it after dark is its reputation as a haunted place—and as a site connected to several disturbing rumors.
The Construction Accident Rumor
One old story says that during the construction of Yamagami Tunnel, a serious accident occurred and many workers were killed or injured. Because of this, the tunnel became famous for sightings of ghosts wearing work clothes.
However, there does not appear to be any surviving record of a large-scale disaster with many deaths at this tunnel. Of course, if only a few people died in a smaller accident, it may not have left an easily traceable record.
There is also a possible source of confusion: in Kyushu, there is a tunnel called Yamagami No. 2 Tunnel, where an accident in 1945 reportedly killed more than 50 people. It is possible that the two stories became mixed together over time.
The Murder Rumor
Another famous rumor says that a murder once took place near Yamagami Tunnel. According to the story, a woman was attacked and killed in a public restroom near the tunnel, then abandoned in a nearby hut.
The remains of that hut were still reportedly visible in the 2000s, but by 2016 they had been completely removed and the area had been turned into a simple restroom facility. Even so, ghost stories connected to the location continued. People say the restroom door opens by itself, or that the shadowy figure of a woman appears inside and vanishes in an instant.
This murder story also seems to remain in the realm of rumor. In newspaper searches, no matching case from the past 30 years could be found.
The “Kamikakushi” Vanishing Stories
Yamagami Tunnel is also linked to stories of kamikakushi—mysterious disappearances, as if someone had been spirited away.
In the 1990s, people say there were several signs near the tunnel entrance reading something like, “So-and-so is missing. If you have any information, please contact the number below.”
There were especially many stories about people who went there on a late-night test of courage and never came back. Whether these were truly ghost stories or something tied to the stranger occult reputation of the area is another question.
A Zero Magnetic Field?
The mountains around Yamagami Tunnel are also said to contain a “zero magnetic field” zone. In Japanese paranormal culture, a zero magnetic field is a mysterious natural spot where north and south magnetic forces are believed to cancel each other out. Nagano’s famous Bungui Pass is often described this way and is known as a power spot.
If such places are considered power spots, perhaps they also attract things that do not belong to this world. Some people claim that compasses occasionally stop working inside Yamagami Tunnel.
If the tunnel’s rumored incidents and accidents never actually happened, then some might argue that the ghost stories and strange experiences are all being blamed on this supposed magnetic anomaly.
Reported Paranormal Phenomena
Although Yamagami Tunnel was feared locally for a long time, it did not become widely known across Japan at first. Its reputation grew after the 1998 book A Journey Through Mystery Spots Near the Kanto Region introduced it as a place where the ghost of a construction worker appears. The account was associated with Takashi Ikeda, known in Japan as a paranormal researcher.
After that, the tunnel appeared on various ghost-related TV programs, including a paranormal segment on the popular show Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!!
The tunnel itself is only about 200 meters long, but there are no lights inside. Even during the day, once you walk a short distance in, the surroundings become completely dark.
People claim to have seen the ghost of a woman inside the tunnel or heard eerie voices in the darkness. In 2018, a Google Maps Street View image also drew attention because an object resembling an orb appeared in the tunnel.
Beyond the tunnel is only an abandoned campground, meaning Yamagami Tunnel is now effectively a dead end. That campground is also known as a haunted spot. There are many reports of a black shadow there, which some people say is the mountain god.
The name “Yamagami” itself is connected to the idea of a mountain deity, and there is a small shrine nearby dedicated to the Yama no Kami, or “god of the mountain.” Perhaps the strange phenomena at Yamagami Tunnel are said to be the result of a mountain god angered by a tunnel being driven through its domain.
Kanagawa has many other haunted places as well, including sites associated with real incidents and long-running local rumors. Yamagami Tunnel remains one of the prefecture’s best-known examples: a place where hiking route, local legend, and modern occult culture all overlap.
