In Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, there is an old bridge long associated with reports of suicides and ghostly phenomena: Uchikoshi Bridge. It has also become a place visited and filmed by many Japanese horror YouTubers.

Below is a closer look at the history of Uchikoshi Bridge and the rumors that surround it.

The History of Uchikoshi Bridge

After the Great Kanto Earthquake, a reconstruction project was carried out around Uchikoshi Hill, once known as Ushijimayama. The hill was cut through from north to south to create a passageway for the Yokohama city tram.

Uchikoshi Bridge was also built as part of this earthquake recovery work. It spans the cutting and connects the Yamate area with the Minami Ward side of Yokohama. The bridge was completed in August 1928, and that same month, tram service opened between Kurumabashi and Yamamoto-cho.

The bridge was designed by the Yokohama City Civil Engineering Bureau and constructed by Yokohama Dock Company. It is a deck-type steel Langer bridge made up of a two-hinged arch and a truss-stiffened girder resting above it. Its vivid reddish color and tall arch lines are especially distinctive.

Because the bridge crosses the cutting diagonally at an angle of about 70 degrees, the arches have a varied cross-section. Depending on where you view it from, the two arch lines appear slightly misaligned and overlap in a way that creates a unique atmosphere. The abutments are reinforced concrete with stone facing, blending with the mood of the cutting below. As a whole, the bridge forms a striking landscape that feels integrated with its surroundings.

Reported Hauntings and Rumors

Uchikoshi Bridge is considered one of Kanagawa’s better-known haunted spots. According to local rumors, the following phenomena have been reported:

  • The spirits of people who died by suicide are said to jump down toward cars passing beneath the bridge.
  • Some drivers claim that as they pass under the bridge, the steering wheel is pulled or the car behaves strangely.
  • Another rumor says that dismembered body parts, including heads, legs, arms, ears, and eyes, float around the bridge.

There is a significant height difference between the bridge and the ground below, and the site has long been associated with repeated suicides. Because of this, a tall fence has reportedly been installed to prevent people from jumping. Some say the number of suicides has decreased in recent years as a result.

A Ghost-Spot Report

One visitor’s report describes the bridge as follows:

The bridge has slopes on both sides, and the writer says they felt as though they were being pulled by a powerful gravity. Standing on the bridge, they claimed to feel an intense urge to jump.

They warned that people should not pass through the area at night, saying that countless unsettled spirits seemed to be drifting there. According to the report, those thinking about suicide may feel “pulled” by this force and jump before they even realize what they are doing. The writer also claimed that such spirits do not understand they have died and continue to pull in others one after another.

The report ends with a blunt warning: this is not a safe place.

The Jizo Statue Rumor

There is also a rumor about a Jizo statue beneath the bridge. According to one account, so many people jumped from the bridge that the statue eventually came to face upward. The story claims that a paper talisman was placed over its face. This statue is supposedly known as the “upward-facing Jizo.”

As with many haunted-spot stories, this should be treated as local rumor rather than confirmed fact.

A Driver’s Near-Accident Story

Another person reported having a strange experience while driving near the bridge.

They were on their way to visit a client located up on the hill. Just before reaching the area beneath the bridge, the steering wheel suddenly pulled to one side, sending the car into the opposite lane. Fortunately, there was no oncoming vehicle, and they avoided an accident.

It was a clear evening on a gentle uphill curve, and at first the driver blamed themself for being distracted. About a month later, however, they passed through the same road at the same time of day. Once again, the car veered into the opposite lane. Again, there was no oncoming traffic.

The driver said the experience left them terrified. After passing the bridge, they turned on their hazard lights, stopped for a while to calm down, and decided never to take that road again, even in an emergency.

Final Notes

Uchikoshi Bridge was completed in 1928 and survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake reconstruction era and the destruction of World War II. Some people have suggested that the surrounding area may carry a troubled history, especially because Yokohama suffered heavy air raids during the war.

Today, the area around the bridge includes residential neighborhoods and active roads. If you visit, be respectful of local residents, do not block traffic, do not climb fences, and avoid any unsafe behavior. The stories may be frightening, but this is still a real public place where people live and travel every day.

。引用:THE YOKOHAMA STANDARD 。
