Ancient Chinese history is full of cruel punishments and inhuman episodes, but many of them were carried out under the banners of war or government rule. The story of Fan Ju is different.

A small misunderstanding led to his being beaten, imprisoned, and treated as less than human. Yet he survived, escaped, and eventually rose to become chancellor of Qin under King Zhaoxiang. He also advised Qin’s foreign policy and was involved in the execution of the famed general Bai Qi.

Here is the disturbing story of the violence Fan Ju endured, and how he crawled back from the edge of death.

The Beating and Imprisonment of Fan Ju

Fan Ju was originally born in the state of Wei. According to the “Biographies of Fan Ju and Cai Ze” in the Records of the Grand Historian, he came from poverty and struggled for a long time to find a position by traveling and offering his political counsel.

At last, he entered the service of Xu Jia, a noble of Wei. On one occasion, Fan Ju accompanied him as part of an envoy to the state of Qi, where they met King Xiang of Qi.

By this time, Fan Ju’s talent as a politician and strategist was already impressive enough to catch the attention of a ruler. King Xiang was so taken with Fan Ju’s eloquence that he tried to give him a reward far beyond what would normally be offered to a mere attendant in a diplomatic mission.

But during China’s Warring States period, accepting gifts from another state while serving as an envoy could easily lead to suspicions of treason. Fan Ju understood the danger and refused the offer.

Even so, when Xu Jia heard about the attempted reward, he became suspicious. After returning to Wei, he reported the matter to Wei Qi, the chancellor of Wei.

The accusation was simple and deadly: Fan Ju must have revealed Wei’s secrets to the king of Qi, and that was why the reward had been offered.

There was no truth to it. But Wei Qi was enraged. He had Fan Ju beaten mercilessly. Fan Ju was struck again and again with bamboo boards and subjected to whipping.

Realizing that he might be killed, Fan Ju pretended to be dead. By then, his ribs had been broken and his teeth smashed. He was wrapped up like a bundle and thrown into a latrine, where he was left behind.

According to the story, even when Fan Ju begged for help, the men who had branded him a traitor mocked him, urinated on him, and walked away.

At the time, many criminals were executed or exiled. Fan Ju, however, was treated as if he were no longer human at all. It is a horrifying scene to imagine.

But even in that state, he did not give up. He bribed a gatekeeper, escaped, and with the help of a friend, slipped away by joining the party of an envoy from Qin heading west.

Fan Ju’s Escape to Qin

The man who had come from Qin to Wei was Wang Ji. He recognized Fan Ju’s ability, gave him an alias, and brought him back to Qin.

Wang Ji recommended Fan Ju to King Zhaoxiang, but the king showed little interest at first. Nearly a year passed in Qin without Fan Ju being granted an audience.

Eventually, Fan Ju decided he could not wait any longer. He sent word to the king, asking to be tested. If he proved useless, he said, the king could have him executed.

That finally earned him a meeting.

During this audience, Fan Ju presented the diplomatic strategy later known as “befriend the distant, attack the near.” As the phrase suggests, the policy called for Qin to use diplomacy with distant states while waging war against nearby ones.

At the time, Qi was a major power, while Wei and Han, both closer to Qin, stood in opposition to it. Fan Ju argued that Qin should first invade Wei and Han, using those victories to increase pressure on larger states such as Chu and Qi.

This strategy was carried out by generals including Bai Qi, and it became one of the foundations of Qin’s growing power.

After earning King Zhaoxiang’s trust, Fan Ju also succeeded in taking revenge on Xu Jia, the man who had informed on him. His own final fate, however, remains debated among historians.

One version says that after Fan Ju helped bring about the execution of General Bai Qi, a man he later recommended betrayed Qin for Zhao. Under this theory, Fan Ju was executed as an accomplice. Another version says that he was not punished for the incident.

Either way, Fan Ju’s arrival in Qin is said to have helped lay the groundwork for the powerful state that would eventually unify China for the first time.

He was a man who rose from the edge of death to shape history itself.
