Albert Einstein, the genius physicist famous for the theory of relativity, is usually associated with space, time, and physics. But one ominous warning often attributed to him is not about the universe at all. It is about the natural world.
The so-called prophecy is this: “If bees disappeared from the face of the Earth, humans would have no more than four years to live.” Whether treated as a quote, a rumor, or a symbolic warning, it has remained unsettling because Einstein was known for his broad understanding of science.
So what would actually happen if bees became extinct?
If Bees Disappeared
To put it bluntly, the fear is that humanity could face collapse.
Pollinators play an extremely important role in Earth’s ecosystems. Many people know the basic process: pollen from a male flower is carried to a female flower, fertilization occurs, and after a few days, fruit or flowers begin to form. Bees are responsible for a large part of that process.
Of course, bees are not the only pollinators. Bats, butterflies, flies, and birds also play important roles. But bees are especially well suited to the job.
One reason is that bees need pollen to raise their larvae. They are biologically driven to gather it. Another reason is their bodies: bees are covered in tiny hairs, which makes it easy for pollen to cling to them and increases the chance of pollination.
If some major upheaval caused bees to vanish from the planet, a large part of the food chain could begin to break down.
Bees Are Already in Danger
Some readers may think, “A catastrophe like that would never happen. Bees couldn’t just disappear in a single day.”
Unfortunately, the possibility of severe bee decline is not just fantasy. There is a phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD, in which honeybee colonies suddenly vanish, sometimes almost overnight.
In recent years, reported cases of CCD have decreased, but that does not mean the problem is over. Environmental issues remain, including parasitic mites such as the Varroa mite, which can infect and kill honeybees.
There are also political and social concerns. In 2013, former President Barack Obama introduced a Pollinator Health Task Force and related research efforts. The plan called on government agencies to reconsider ways to protect birds, bats, butterflies, and bees.
Based on this effort, restrictions on pesticide use and the expansion of habitats were expected to become important first steps in protecting vulnerable pollinators.
Pesticide regulation is a major issue, especially when it comes to neonicotinoid pesticides. These chemicals are considered to have relatively low toxicity for humans, but even small amounts can affect honeybees’ sense of direction.
According to this account, President Donald Trump’s administration promised to reduce or weaken the Environmental Protection Agency and roll back environmental regulations from the Obama era. As a result, the pollinator protection plan was cut short.
If such protections disappear, waterways and natural environments may become more polluted, increasing the risk of harm to pollinators.
Did Bees Disappear From the Northern Hemisphere?
Beginning in 2006, incidents were reported in the United States, Europe, and other regions in which Western honeybees seemed to disappear all at once, sometimes overnight.
By 2007, some reports claimed that one-quarter of the honeybees living in the Northern Hemisphere had vanished.
A Chilling Warning
Einstein’s alleged prophecy feels more disturbing today because parts of it seem to echo real environmental fears.
If the warning attributed to him is coming true in any form, then protecting bees is not a small issue. However tiny they may be, bees hold an essential place in the global food chain.
Just imagining a world where bees have disappeared from Earth is enough to send a chill down the spine.

相対性理論で有名な天才物理学者アインシュタイン。アインシュタインが特化している分野は物理学だが、彼の残した予言は宇宙や物理学だけではないのです。それは自然科学に関する予言です。今回はアインシュタインの残した予言について迫っていきたいと思います。アインシュタインが残した予言。。「もしハチが地球上からいなくなると、人間は４年以上生きられない」。アインシュタインは自然科学全般に精通していたので、この予言はかなり信ぴょう性の高いものといえます。
実際にハチが絶滅したらどうなるのか詳しく見ていきましょう。もしハチが絶滅したら？。。結論から言うと 「人類は滅亡する」 。地球の生態系における、送粉者はかなり重要になります。雄花から出る花粉を雌花に運び受粉すると、数日後に実や花がなるという仕組みになっているのは多くの方が理解していると思います。その大部分を担っているのがハチなのです。もちろん、送粉者の役割を担っているのはハチだけではなりません。「コウモリ・蝶・ハエ・鳥」といった種も重要な役割を担っています。
ハチは送粉という仕事が一番適しているのです。何故かというと、ハチは幼虫を育てていくために花粉が必要だからです。そのためハチは生物学的に突き動かされて花粉を集めているのです。他の適している理由を挙げるとしたら、ハチは体に多くの毛が生えていて、その毛に花粉が付きやすいため、受粉率が上がるのです。もし、なんらかの大変動が地球に起き、 地球上からハチが消え去ったとすると、食物連鎖の大部分が崩れてしまう でしょう。ハチは危険に侵されている。。「大変動も起こるわけないし、一日にしてハチが消えることなんてありえないだろ！
」。このように思った方も少なくはないはずです。しかし、残念ながら、ハチが絶滅する可能性は大いにあり得ることなのです。一晩にミツバチの群れが消え去ってしまうことを「蜜蜂群崩壊症候群（ Colony Collapse Disorder ： CCD ）といいます。ここ数年の蜜蜂群崩壊症候群の発生件数は減少気味にありますが、だからと言って大丈夫というわけではありません。環境における問題は「ミツバチヘギイタダニ」という寄生ダニがミツバチに感染して死んでしまうという事態も起きています。
そして、社会的にも大きな問題に直面しています。それは 新大統領による新政権 です。２０１３年にオバマ前大統領は「送粉者保護研究計画」を実施していました。これは政府機関に鳥やコウモリ、蝶・ハチを保護する手段を再検討する計画です。これを元に、農薬使用や、生息地の拡大などを行い、脆弱な送粉者たちを守るための第一歩として期待されていたのです。農薬の使用の規制は大きく、ネオニコチノイド系の農薬が大きく関係しています。この農薬は、人類に対しての毒性は弱いものの、ミツバチに対しては、少量でも方向感覚に影響を与えてしまうのです。
そして、新大統領トランプ大統領が環境保護庁の縮小廃止、そしてオバマ政権時代の環境法後の規制法を後退することを約束したのです。そのため、送粉者保護計画は短くも終わってしまったのでした。この送粉者保護計画が終わることによって、水辺や自然環境が汚染され、送粉者たちに悪影響が及んでしまう可能性が大きくなってしまうのです。北半球からハチが消滅した？！。。２００６年から米国やヨーロッパなどでセイヨウミツバチが一晩にして一斉失踪する時間が起きました。
２００７年までに、 北半球に生息するミツバチの４分の１が消えた という報告がありました。まとめ。いかがだったでしょうか？。アインシュタインの予言が近年になってあたりつつありますね。もしこのアインシュタインが残したとされる予言が現実になりつつあるなら、今すぐハチを保護するために行動する必要があります。いくら小さくても地球上の食物連鎖という重要な役割を担っていることには変わりはありません。もし、地球からハチがいなくなってしまったと考えただけでぞっとするような内容ですね
