Hata Tunnel in Hanno City, Saitama Prefecture, is an abandoned tunnel with the atmosphere of a Meiji-era cultural relic. It has been used as a filming location for an AKB48 music video, and some rumors even claim it is connected to the famous urban legend of the “human-faced dog.” Thanks to stories like these, the tunnel is known far beyond the local area.
At the same time, Hata Tunnel has a darker reputation: many people call it one of Saitama’s most frightening haunted spots. For more than 20 years, stories have circulated about a female ghost, something appearing in a curved traffic mirror, an old woman crawling on all fours, a headless rider, and even a smiling stain on the ceiling.
The History of Hata Tunnel
Hata Tunnel is located on an old road near Okawara and Shimohata in Hanno City, Saitama, now designated as City Road 4-540-1. It was carved through rock in 1908 and is said to have been Saitama Prefecture’s first brick-lined tunnel.
For 77 years, it served as part of a prefectural road and contributed to the development of the local area. However, after a bypass was completed in 1987, the old tunnel gradually fell out of use. By the late 1990s, passage through the tunnel had been prohibited.
Even today, the brick structure stands quietly in a wooded area, and some people value it as a piece of modern cultural heritage. It certainly has a strong atmosphere. That may be why it was chosen as a filming location for AKB48’s second single, “Seifuku ga Jama o Suru.”
But Hata Tunnel is also famous as one of Saitama’s most notorious haunted places. Abandoned roads and old tunnels often attract ghost stories, but in Hata Tunnel’s case, there are also some unsettling real-world details.
The area is prone to fog. Bears have also been reported nearby. In places like this, accidents, injuries, or even fatal incidents are not impossible. Another well-known local rumor claims that someone once died by suicide near the tunnel exit.
Ghost Stories and Strange Encounters
Although Hata Tunnel is more than 100 years old, it was already feared as a haunted place at least 20 years ago. Over the years, many strange experiences have been told about it.
Locals reportedly called it “Bake-ton,” short for “ghost tunnel,” and it seems to have been a popular test-of-courage spot for young people. The well-known ghost storyteller Junji Inagawa also visited and introduced the tunnel in a video.
Today, however, visiting as a haunted spot is not recommended. Local residents have complained about nuisance behavior, and the area has problems such as illegal dumping, deterioration, and safety risks. If a road, tunnel, or surrounding land is closed or restricted, do not enter.
One especially famous urban legend from the 1990s is the “human-faced dog.” There have been multiple claimed sightings of this creature around Hata Tunnel. Some people even say Hata Tunnel is where the legend began, though the truth is unclear.
Among the ghost stories told about Hata Tunnel are the following:
- If you look back at the tunnel exit, an old woman on all fours is said to chase you with a terrifying expression and incredible speed.
- The ghosts of a parent and child who died in an accident are said to appear.
- A headless motorcycle rider is said to show up.
- If you look back from the tunnel and check the curved traffic mirror, something is said to appear in it.
- The ghost of a woman in a one-piece dress, said to have died by suicide, is said to appear.
The Curse of the Smiling Stain
One of the best-known stories connected to Hata Tunnel is the so-called “curse of the stain.”
On the ceiling of the tunnel, there are several white stains. Some are said to resemble human faces. Most supposedly look like faces twisted in pain.
But among them, according to the rumor, there is one stain that looks like it is smiling.
It is said that anyone who sees the smiling stain will inevitably die.
In one version of the story, a group visited the tunnel for a test of courage. One young woman, whether she knew the rumor or not, pointed at the ceiling and said, “Oh! That stain is smiling. Haha, that’s funny.”
The others could not find the smiling stain she was pointing at. As she kept pointing upward, she laughed by herself. The sight unsettled everyone around her.
Afterward, she reportedly began behaving strangely and was eventually hospitalized. One day, she suddenly died of heart failure. According to the story, she died staring at the hospital ceiling, laughing to herself.
Hata Tunnel remains one of Saitama’s most talked-about haunted locations, combining Meiji-era history, abandoned-road atmosphere, urban legends, and decades of eerie rumors. Saitama has many other famous haunted places as well, including the Shin-Misato Tunnel and Yakushido no Maki, but Hata Tunnel continues to stand out for the sheer number of stories attached to it.

埼玉県 飯能市 の 「畑トンネル」 といえば、 明治時代 に作られた文化遺産的な香りが漂う 廃トンネル です。AKB48 のPVのロケ地にも使われたり、 有名な都市伝説「人面犬」の発祥の地 という噂もあり、全国的にも知名度があります。しかし この畑トンネル、実は埼玉県最恐と名高い 心霊スポット なんです。女性の霊、何かが映るカーブミラー、四つんばいの老婆、首なしライダー、笑顔のシミ などなど……20年以上前から数々の心霊体験が語られています。
今回は埼玉県の心霊スポット、「畑トンネル」の歴史や心霊現象を紹介します。埼玉県の心霊スポット「畑トンネル」の歴史。。埼玉県最恐の心霊スポット「畑トンネル」 は、埼玉県飯能市大河原・下畑付近の旧道（現・市道4-540-1号線）にあります。明治41年に岩をくりぬいて造られたトンネルで、 埼玉県初の煉瓦巻トンネル でもありました。77年間県道として利用され、地域の発展に役立った歴史あるトンネルなのですが、昭和62年にバイパスが完成したことで次第に使われなくなり、 1990年代末には通行禁止になりました 。
しかし 静かな樹林帯に今もひっそりとたたずむレンガ建築物 は、 近代文化遺産 として価値があるという声もあるほどです。実際に、かなり雰囲気があります。AKB48のセカンドシングル『制服が邪魔をする』のPVロケ地に選ばれたのは、そういった理由からなのでしょう 。。しかしこの畑トンネル、同時に 埼玉県最恐の心霊スポット としても名高いのです……。そもそも廃道や廃トンネルというものは、総じて心霊スポットになりやすいものですが、畑トンネルに関しては、実際に 不気味な事実 がいくつかあるのです。
まず、 霧 が出やすいです。そして畑トンネルの付近には、 クマ が出没します。怪我を負った人や、最悪死亡した例も過去にはあったのでしょう。そして地元の間でささやかれている有名な噂としては、出口付近で 首つり自殺 があったというものがあります。埼玉県の心霊スポット「畑トンネル」の心霊体験。。畑トンネル自体は100年以上の歴史を持ちますが、 20年前にはもう心霊スポットとして恐れられていました から、これまでに多くの心霊体験が語られています。
地元では 「化けトン」 （お化けトンネル）と呼ばれて親しまれていたようで、おそらく少年少女たちから肝試しスポットとして重宝されてきたのでしょう。怪談師の稲川淳二氏も訪れて、ビデオで紹介されたこともあります 。しかし今では近隣住民から迷惑の声が上がったり、不法投棄や荒れ放題で危険もありますので、心霊スポットとして訪れることはオススメしません。ちなみに、 90年代に流行った有名な都市伝説 で 「人面犬」 というものがありますが……この人面犬、畑トンネルでも目撃情報がいくつもあるのです。
中には、 「畑トンネルが人面犬の発祥の地だ」 といっている人もいます。真相はわかりませんが……。。ではここで、畑トンネルで語られた心霊体験をいくつか紹介しましょう。トンネルの出口で後ろを振りかえると、 四つんばいの老婆 がものすごい形相とスピードで追いかけてくる 事故で亡くなった 親子の霊 が出る 首なしライダー が出る トンネルから後ろを振り向いてカーブミラーを見ると、必ず 何か が映る ワンピースの女性の 自殺者の霊 が出る 「畑トンネル」の笑うシミの呪い。
。最後に、畑トンネルに伝わる 「シミの呪い」 という話を紹介します。畑トンネルの天井には、 白いシミ がいくつかあり、 人の顔 に見えるものもあります。ほとんどは 苦痛の表情を浮かべた顔 に見えるのですが……。中には、 笑った顔のシミ があるらしいのです。しかしこの笑顔のシミを見た者は、 必ず死ぬ といいます。肝試しに訪れたあるメンバーの一人の女性がそんな噂を知ってか知らずか。「あっ！あの染み笑ってるよ。あはは、面白～い。」と染みを指さしながら言った。
