The Roswell Incident is one of the most famous alleged UFO crash stories in the world. According to the legend, an unidentified flying object crashed near Roswell, New Mexico, and was recovered by people connected to the U.S. government.
For travelers and horror fans, Roswell has become a major destination for UFO museums, alien-themed shops, and strange American folklore. But the story itself is tangled in official statements, rumors, and unanswered questions.
From Discovery to Recovery
The incident first became public through a Roswell evening newspaper. Its headline reported that the RAAF had “captured a flying saucer” on a ranch near Roswell.
The report said that, although there had been many rumors about flying saucers, one had apparently become real the day before. The intelligence office of the 509th Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force, at Roswell Army Air Field had reportedly obtained a “disc” with the help of a local ranch worker and the sheriff’s office in Chaves County.
According to the article, the object had landed sometime the previous week on a ranch near Roswell. Because there was no telephone service, the ranch worker kept the object until he could contact the sheriff’s office. The sheriff then informed Major Jesse A. Marcel of the 509th Bomb Group intelligence office.
Action was taken quickly, and the object was removed from the rancher’s home. It was examined at Roswell Army Air Field and later sent onward by Major Marcel to a higher command.
The same report also mentioned local witnesses, the Wilmot couple, who said they saw a shining object appear in the sky late at night on July 2 and fly toward the northwest.
They reportedly saw it for only a few seconds before it disappeared at tremendous speed.
What Was the “Flying Saucer”?
Only a few hours after the newspaper report was published, a military commander issued a correction.
The recovered object, the military said, was not a flying saucer. It was a weather observation balloon.
At the time, the strange change in explanation did not become the massive controversy it would later become. The mystery of the “disc” remained unresolved in the public imagination, and the story was gradually forgotten for a while.
The U.S. Military’s Official Explanation
Beginning in 1994, the U.S. military released an official explanation suggesting that the “flying saucer” involved in the Roswell Incident was most likely a balloon from the once top-secret Project Mogul.
Project Mogul used balloons carrying special equipment designed to detect sound waves from Soviet nuclear tests. According to this explanation, the balloon equipment may have been misidentified after it crashed.
The project also involved dummy figures in some tests, and the official view suggested that witnesses may have mistaken these dummies for alien bodies.
At the time, Project Mogul was classified. The project was active around 1947–1948, which overlaps with the timing of the Roswell Incident. Because of that, some other UFO sightings from the same era have also been linked to Project Mogul balloons.
Lingering Doubts
Even with the official explanation, many people still feel that something about the story does not add up.
Skeptics of the government version ask why a once-classified project could be revealed so plainly later on. Others argue that a balloon, especially one made with relatively simple materials, should not have been mistaken for a flying saucer.
There are also later claims that many witnesses saw not only a disc-like object but also what they believed were three alien bodies. These claims remain part of the Roswell legend, though they are disputed and difficult to verify.
In the end, the Roswell Incident remains a mix of official records, sudden corrections, Cold War secrecy, and UFO folklore. Whether it was a secret military balloon, a misunderstanding, or something stranger, the story continues to fuel the suspicion that the U.S. military may have hidden more than it revealed.

夫妻は物体を目撃していたのはほんの数秒だけだったそうです。猛スピードでどこかへ去って行ってしまったそうです。空飛ぶ円盤の正体 。この夕刊紙が発行された数時間後になんと軍司令官が内容の訂正を発表したのです。回収されたものは 「空飛ぶ円盤」ではなく、気象観測用気球であった としました。しかし、このような奇妙な出来事は大きく問題視されずに円盤の正体は解決されずにそのまま忘れ去られてしまうのでした。アメリカ軍の公式見解 。1994 年以降に、 ロズウェル事件の空飛ぶ円盤の正体は、極秘とされていた「モーグル計画」の気球の可能性が高い とアメリカ軍が公式見解を出したのです。
このモーグル計画は、ソ連の核実験によって発生した音波を検出するために特殊な機材を積んだ気球です。その気球には特殊機材だけではなく、ダミー人形も載せていたため、墜落した際にその人形を目撃者が宇宙人と勘違いしていたとされています。当時は極秘扱いされていたそうです。モーグル計画が企画された時期が 1947 年～ 1948 年なのでロズウェル事件とちょうど時期が重なります。しかも、この事件だけではなくほかの UFO 目撃事件がこのモーグル計画の気球ではないかといわれて始めています。
