Tsugane Otoshi Falls: Hidden Christian Ghost Rumors in Saikai, Nagasaki

English Version

Tsugane Otoshi Falls is a waterfall in Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture, with a handful of quiet but eerie rumors attached to it.

On the way to the falls, there is said to be a small tunnel. According to local stories, visitors have reported seeing a pale white face appear inside the tunnel, or hearing what sounds like a woman crying.

The waterfall itself has its own rumors. Some say the spirits of persecuted Christians appear there. Others claim that something can be seen walking across the surface of the waterfall’s water.

These stories are often connected to the area’s history. It is said that Christians once hid and lived around this place, and that the legends may be tied to the mass killings known as Christian hunts.

The reported location is around 379 Yukiura Kawadorigo, Oseto-cho, Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture. If you visit, treat the area as a real natural site: stay on marked paths, avoid unsafe tunnels or restricted areas, and do not go alone at night or during bad weather.
