According to a famous conspiracy legend, the United States once carried out an experiment to hide a massive warship from enemy eyes. The goal was invisibility—but in the story, the ship did not simply vanish from sight. It disappeared completely, then seemed to teleport.
Even more strangely, the tale claims that some of the most famous scientific minds of the age were involved.
The Alleged Philadelphia Experiment
The so-called Philadelphia Experiment is said to have taken place on October 28, 1943, off the coast of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1930s, according to the legend, the US Navy was planning a method to generate a powerful magnetic field around a warship, making it impossible to detect by radar or even by the naked eye.
In other words, the plan was to make a warship invisible.
The story claims that Nikola Tesla was involved, along with John von Neumann, known for his contributions to the foundations of computing, and even Albert Einstein. One version of the tale gives the year 1836 for an early Tesla experiment using a Tesla coil on an unmanned vessel, although that date is impossible for Tesla and is one reason the story is treated as legend rather than confirmed history. In that version, the experiment partially succeeded in making the ship invisible, leading to plans for tests with human crew members.
Tesla’s Warning
By 1942, a manned experiment using a military vessel was allegedly being planned. Tesla, however, is said to have opposed it, warning that using such a powerful magnetic-field generator on human beings would be dangerous.
As World War II intensified, the Navy supposedly rushed the project forward. According to the legend, Tesla was removed from the plan, and von Neumann took over the work.
The Experiment Begins
On October 28, 1943, the experiment was finally carried out aboard the destroyer escort USS Eldridge, with crew members on board.
The Eldridge was fitted with a device designed to generate an intense magnetic field. The secret test was allegedly conducted at a military facility in Philadelphia. Once the experiment began and the magnetic field grew stronger, the ship was wrapped in a strange blue-green mist.
As the mist covered the entire vessel, the Eldridge disappeared from the sight of those watching.
At first, it seemed as if the experiment had succeeded. Then something far more disturbing was said to have happened.
A Sudden Appearance in Norfolk
After vanishing from the waters off Philadelphia, the Eldridge reportedly appeared at the naval port in Norfolk, Virginia—about 470 kilometers away in a straight line.
The story says it was seen there by crew members aboard transport and cargo ships anchored in the harbor. Then, just as suddenly, the Eldridge returned to the Philadelphia area.
The original goal had supposedly been invisibility. Instead, the experiment appeared to have caused a mysterious teleportation event.
But the strangest part of the legend concerns what happened to the crew.
Some sailors were allegedly found in impossible conditions:
- Some were engulfed in flames.
- Some kept disappearing and reappearing.
- Some were fused into the walls or body of the ship.
The story also claims that half of the crew suffered severe mental trauma afterward.
How the Story Became Public
If the experiment was secret, how did the story become known?
The legend is said to begin with a letter sent to Morris K. Jessup, a man with a doctorate in astronomy. The letter came from someone named Carlos Miguel Allende, and it allegedly described the experiment in remarkable detail.
Three years later, in 1959, Jessup died in what was reported as a suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning, with exhaust fumes routed into his car through a hose. Because of the strange nature of the Philadelphia Experiment story, his death became another mystery attached to the legend.
Searches for Allende, the man said to have sent the letter, reportedly failed to produce clear answers.
And so the Philadelphia Experiment remains one of the most famous modern military legends: a story of invisibility, teleportation, vanished evidence, and questions that seem to disappear into the dark.
For travelers interested in the real locations connected to the legend, Philadelphia and Norfolk both have public waterfront areas and museums. Do not enter restricted naval or military facilities; stick to legal, public sites.

エルドリッジ号には磁場発生装置を積み込み、そこから発生する強力な磁場を利用し軍艦を透明化するというものでした。そして、ペンシルベニア州フィラデルフィアにある軍の兵器工場で秘密裏に実験が開始されたのでした。実験開始後、強力な磁場が発生し始めると、エルドリッジ号は青緑色の霧のようなものに包まれたのです。その霧に船全体が覆われ、その姿を見守る人々の目から見事に消えたのでした。実験は成功と思われましたが・・・。予想外の緊急事態発生 。。エルドリッジ号が姿を消し、実験は成功かと思われたが衝撃的なことが起きたのです。
透明化されたエルドリッジ号はフィラデルフィア沖から直線距離で 470 キロ離れているバージニア州ノーフォーク軍港に突如現れたのです。当時軍港に停泊していた輸送船と貨物船の乗員によって目撃されていたのです。それからエルドリッジ号は再びフィラデルフィア沖に舞い戻ってきたのでした。透明化させることが実験の目的だったはずか、何故か瞬間移動するという謎の現象を引き起こしてしまったのでした。しかし、事態はそれだけでは済まなかったのでした。エルドリッジ号の乗員は常識では考えられない状態で発見されたのです。

しかし、この手紙を受け取ったモーリス・ケッチャム・ジェサップは 3 年後の 1959 年に排気ガスをホースで社内に引き込み、一酸化炭素中毒で死亡という謎の自殺を遂げたのでした。手紙を出したアレンデという男を捜索するが見つからなかったそうです。すべては闇に葬られたとてもいうのでしょうか・・・
