English Version
A man in a down jacket appears in a car’s side mirror in the middle of summer, then vanishes. Just after midnight, someone dressed like a hot spring guest in a yukata crosses in front of a car—but when the driver stops, no one is there. A motorcyclist feels their helmet being pulled from directly above. A car navigation system that worked normally during the day suddenly tries to guide the driver home at night along this remote tourist road, far from the Dōō Expressway.
These are some of the rumors linked to the sightseeing road that cuts through the mountains behind Noboribetsu Onsen. In daylight, it is an ordinary road used by tourists. After sunset, however, foot traffic disappears, the area grows dark, and the atmosphere changes completely.
The area has also been associated with past incidents, including a kokanee salmon poacher reportedly freezing to death at Lake Kuttara, a hanging suicide in the mountains, and an accident in which a drunken guest fell into a geyser. Because of stories like these, drivers who pass through at night have reported many strange and unexplained sightings.
Location: Tourist Road, Kojohama, Shiraoi Town, Shiraoi District, Hokkaido.
If you visit, go during daylight, drive carefully, and follow all road closures and local rules. Avoid stopping in unsafe places or entering restricted areas.
