Old Komine Tunnel, also known as Komine Zuido, is located in Hachioji, Tokyo. Among Japan’s haunted-place fans, it has a reputation as one of the country’s most notorious ghost spots.
The story most often connected to the tunnel involves the Tokyo-Saitama serial child abduction and murder case of 1988 to 1989, committed by Tsutomu Miyazaki. A rumor claims that one of the victims was killed in this tunnel and that her body was found there. Because of that, stories have spread of a young girl’s ghost appearing without hands or limbs.
But how much of that is true? The history of Old Komine Tunnel is a mixture of documented facts, older ghost rumors, and later urban legends that became tied to a real and tragic case.
The history of Old Komine Tunnel
The official name of Old Komine Tunnel is Komine Zuido. It sits on an old road in Hachioji, Tokyo, and first opened in 1916.
Because the tunnel was narrow and considered inconvenient and unsafe, construction eventually began on a newer tunnel route that would bypass it. When New Komine Tunnel opened in 1999, the old tunnel effectively became abandoned.
Today, gates have been installed at both the entrance and exit, and vehicles cannot pass through. Walking through may technically be possible in some circumstances, but visitors should respect any closures, barriers, local rules, and safety warnings. This is an old tunnel in a mountainous area, so do not trespass, enter restricted zones, or attempt risky night visits.
Abandoned tunnels often become haunted spots in Japan, but Old Komine Tunnel had a ghostly reputation even before the newer tunnel was built. For example, the October 2, 1988 issue of the local Akigawa Shimbun reported that a woman’s ghost appeared at Komine Tunnel.
Other accounts of strange experiences at the tunnel also appeared in magazines such as Weekly Myojo and Josei Seven in September 1989. Still, Old Komine Tunnel seems to have become nationally famous as a “terrifying haunted spot” only after 1989.

Old Komine Tunnel and the Tsutomu Miyazaki case
From 1988 to 1989, Japan was shaken by the Tokyo-Saitama serial child abduction and murder case. Four young girls were abducted and killed. The perpetrator, Tsutomu Miyazaki, became one of Japan’s most infamous serial killers.
The case also had a major cultural impact. It fueled intense public backlash against otaku culture, horror media, and certain parts of Japanese subculture.
A rumor later spread that the fourth victim in the Miyazaki case had been killed at Old Komine Tunnel and that her body was found there. Because of this, people began saying that the ghost of a little girl without wrists appears in the tunnel.
However, this is only a rumor, and at least part of it is false.
There is no confirmed fact that any victim was killed inside Old Komine Tunnel. What is true is that on September 13, 1989, bones from the victim’s hands and feet were found in the woods around Komine Pass. The area is related geographically, but the discovery site was more than two kilometers from Old Komine Tunnel.
Because the tunnel was already rumored to be haunted by a woman’s ghost, and because it was in the same broader area as the later discovery, the story may have changed over time into the claim that the victim was killed at the tunnel itself.
Even so, stories about the ghost of a young girl near Komine Pass were already being told around that period. In The Tsutomu Miyazaki Trial, published by Asahi Shimbun in 1991 and written by Ryuzo Saki, there is a passage saying that around the spring of 1989, rumors spread of a ghost at Komine Pass: a young girl waving her hand, but when seen closely, she had no wrist. The passage also notes that people said the ghost stopped appearing after Miyazaki’s arrest.
There is another strange and bitter connection. The 1988 Akigawa Shimbun article about ghost sightings at Old Komine Tunnel was edited and published by none other than Tsutomu Miyazaki’s father.
After the crimes committed by his son, Miyazaki’s father died by suicide in 1994. When Tsutomu Miyazaki heard the news, he reportedly said he felt “relieved.”
It is a grim, empty, and deeply sad chain of events, whether viewed as crime history, local rumor, or haunted folklore.
Reported phenomena at Old Komine Tunnel
Many of the ghost stories now told about Old Komine Tunnel are connected to the Miyazaki case, even though the direct tunnel connection is not supported as fact.
Common reports include:
- The ghost of a little girl
- Sudden nausea or feeling unwell
- Strange noises in or around the tunnel
- A female voice heard or recorded
- Sleep paralysis or an oppressive presence reported after visiting
When the popular YouTuber group Fischer’s visited the location, they reportedly experienced phenomena such as sleep paralysis and what sounded like a woman’s voice on recording.
Still, because Old Komine Tunnel was known as a haunted place even before the Miyazaki case became linked to it, some believers say there may have already been “something” there.
The tunnel’s physical structure may also contribute to its eerie reputation. Some people describe it as feeling distorted or warped, and that unsettling atmosphere may cause visitors to feel sick or disoriented. Although it is an abandoned tunnel, lights remain inside. The red glow reflecting on the tunnel walls can make the passage look as if it has been stained with blood, inevitably calling the tragic rumors to mind.
Old Komine Tunnel is not the only haunted place in Hachioji. The area is also known for Hachioji Castle Ruins, another famous ghost spot. Elsewhere in Tokyo, places such as the Prudential Tower, Ueno Park, Sendagaya Tunnel, and even Roppongi Hills have their own occult reputations.
Old Komine Tunnel remains one of Tokyo’s most talked-about haunted sites, but its most famous legend should be treated carefully: the tunnel’s connection to the Miyazaki case is largely rumor, while the real history behind it is far more tragic than any ghost story.

東京都の心霊スポット「旧小峰トンネル」の歴史【秋川新聞】。。東京都の心霊スポット、 旧小峰トンネル の正式名称は 「小峰隧道（こみねずいどう）」 といいます。八王子市の旧道にあるトンネルです。1916年に開通した旧小峰トンネルでしたが、 幅が狭く利便性や安全性が悪かった ということで、旧小峰トンネルをう回するかたちでの 新しいトンネル の建設がはじまりました。1999年に「新小峰トンネル」が開通されると、旧小峰トンネルは廃トンネルと化しました 。

。4人の幼女が誘拐・殺害された、いわゆる猟奇殺人事件です 。犯人の 宮崎勤 はシリアルキラーと呼ばれました。オタクバッシング や ホラーバッシング が起こり、日本のサブカルチャーに大きな影響を与えたことでも有名な事件ですよね。実はこの 宮崎勤事件の第4の被害者がこの 旧小峰トンネル で殺害され、その遺体が発見された と噂されているのです。そのため旧小峰トンネルでは、 手首のない幼女の霊が現れる といいます。。しかしこれはあくまで噂で、半分はデマです。
。まず、 旧小峰トンネルで被害者が殺害されたという事実はありません 。しかし 1989年9月13日に小峰峠の山林で、被害者の手足の骨が発見されたのは事実 です。とはいえ発見地と旧小峰トンネルは地域こそ同じものの、 2km以上も離れていますが 。もともと「女性の霊が現れる」と噂があった心霊スポットである旧小峰トンネルと地域が同じだったため、この 旧小峰トンネルで殺害された という噂が誕生したのでしょう。。とはいえ旧小峰トンネルに幼女の霊が出たという心霊体験は、当時から語られていたようです。
1991年に朝日新聞社から出版された 『宮崎勤裁判』 （佐木隆三著）にも、 「89年春ころから、小峰峠に幽霊が出るとの噂が立った。幼女が手を振っており、よく見ると手首がない‥‥しかし、宮崎の逮捕後は出なくなったとか」 と書かれています。しかも先ほど述べた、 『秋川新聞』の旧小峰トンネルの心霊体験の記事を編集し発行していたのは、皮肉にも 宮崎勤の父親 だった のです。その後宮崎勤の父親は、息子が起こした事件に対する自負の念から1994年に 自殺 をしてしまいました。
その知らせを聞いた宮崎勤は、 「スーッとした」 と言ったそうです。なんとも因縁めいた、虚しく哀しいお話ですよね……。。東京都の心霊スポット「旧小峰トンネル」の心霊現象。。東京都の心霊スポット、旧小峰トンネルで語られる心霊体験としては、やはり宮崎勤事件に関連したものが多いです。幼女の霊が出る 気分が悪くなる 異音がする 心霊系YouTuberのフィッシャーズ氏が訪れた際には、金縛りに遭ったり、女性の声が撮られるなどの心霊現象が認められました 。
