A Ghost Marriage, but Not Quite
In occult culture, there are stories of people marrying the dead. In some traditions, a so-called ghost marriage has a ritual meaning: a woman may want to marry a fiancé or lover who died, or the family may feel it is pitiful to let someone depart into the afterlife alone.
But the story of the woman who married a 300-year-old ghost is a little different.
According to reports, she was a single woman living in Northern Europe who had a strong interest in fortune-telling, spiritualism, and the occult. One day, a medium introduced her to the spirit of a man said to have been executed 300 years earlier. The woman later claimed that she herself was able to contact this ghost through her own psychic abilities.
In other words, she decided to marry a ghost that only she and the medium could supposedly see—a man she had never met while he was alive. Even before anything else happened, it was already an extremely occult kind of love story.
Of course, the pirate ghost could not be seen by ordinary people. He could not be introduced to her family and friends in the usual way. Still, the woman said she fell in love with him, and eventually the two held a wedding ceremony.
It was reportedly a large ceremony held on a rented boat. This shipboard wedding was covered by the media in 2018. An engagement ring was prepared and exchanged, and except for the fact that the groom was a ghost, the ceremony apparently went smoothly.
And so, at least in her own understanding, the two became husband and wife.
The Frightening Reason for the Divorce
For a while, the newlyweds were said to have been happy. But not long after the wedding, something changed: the woman began to suffer from a mysterious illness.
Her condition became serious enough that she had to be hospitalized. Even then, she reportedly still wanted to continue her newly married life with her ghost husband.
Eventually, however, she developed sepsis and needed surgery. She had kept wearing the engagement ring as proof of her marriage to the ghost, but before the operation, the ring had to be removed.
When it came off, she said she suddenly felt better.
That experience seems to have made her wonder whether marrying the ghost might have been connected to her poor health. She then announced on Twitter that she was divorcing her ghost husband.
Of course, this was not a legal divorce. There were no divorce papers to file and no property to divide. In this case, simply declaring the marriage over was apparently enough—because the other party was a ghost.
After the Divorce
After she ended the marriage, her health reportedly began to improve. But the story did not end there.
She still felt as if she was being possessed. From the time the medium introduced her to the ghost, she had claimed she could communicate with him psychically. After the divorce, she said the ghost threatened her, telling her that if she tried to cut ties with him, he would kill her.
Feeling increasingly in danger, she turned to someone said to have strong exorcism abilities and asked for the spirit to be removed.
After that, perhaps out of fear, she decided to stop all contact with the pirate ghost she had once loved so much that she held a wedding on a boat. Her health then reportedly continued to improve, and she gradually returned to her normal self.
Was her illness truly caused by the ghost of a pirate? Or was it the result of intense belief, stress, or something else entirely? There is no way to know from the reports alone.
What we can say is that there are people in the world who sincerely believe they have married ghosts introduced to them by mediums.
Other People Who Claim to Marry Ghosts
This woman is not the only person who has claimed to marry a ghost. There are other reports of people saying a ghost boyfriend proposed to them in a cave, or that they planned to marry a spirit and even hoped to become pregnant.
If both people are happy, perhaps marriage is usually their own business. But dating or marrying a ghost is something only a small number of people—those who believe they can communicate with the dead—would even consider possible.
Legally, a marriage to a ghost cannot be recognized. And no matter how much someone may wish for it, having a child with a dead person is not possible in the ordinary physical sense.
So can a marriage like that really continue?
Romance with a ghost may be the ultimate long-distance relationship. But as this story suggests, breaking up may be harder than expected.

夫婦になった２人はしばらくは幸せな時間を過ごしたそうですが、あるときこの女性が謎の体調不良にみまわれます。幽霊と離婚？！その理由が恐ろしい。３００年前に処刑された海賊の幽霊と自ら進んで結婚した女性…周りからどう見えていたかは別にですが、はじめのうちは幸せだったことでしょう。ですが、 結婚からほどなくしてこの女性に異変 がおこりました。それが体調不良です。この体調不良のせいで女性はとうとう入院することになってしまいました。。。。。命に関わるほどの病に襲われた新妻は、身体に異変が起こってもなお、 幽霊の旦那との新婚生活を続けることを望みました。
