Roswell. MJ-12. For many UFO fans, the rumored relationship between aliens and the U.S. military is almost an American mythology of its own.
It has inspired Hollywood films such as Independence Day, and for believers, parts of the story feel close enough to reality to remain unsettling. In this two-part look back, we trace the major legends and claims surrounding the U.S. military and extraterrestrials.

The Beginning: The Roswell Incident
In July 1947, a shock ran through the small town of Roswell, New Mexico.
According to the legend, a UFO crashed in this rural town, and the U.S. military secretly recovered it. Soon after, however, the military denied the local newspaper’s report that it had recovered an unidentified flying object, announcing instead that the wreckage had been a weather balloon.
Still, the local press had reported strange debris on a ranch, and to UFO believers, the official explanation has never felt entirely convincing. Adding to the mystery, the first press release describing the recovered object as a “flying disc” came from a public information officer who was a lieutenant at Roswell Army Air Field.
At the time, the story gradually faded under the military’s weather balloon explanation. Even so, many researchers point to 1947 as the moment when the modern relationship between the U.S. military and UFO lore truly began. Some even call it the “first year of the UFO era.”
The Expansion: Area 51 and MJ-12
Roughly 40 years after Roswell, the history of aliens and the U.S. military suddenly began to move again.
The MJ-12 Documents
One day in 1987, mysterious documents were delivered by an unknown person to an American TV station. They would have a major impact on UFO culture in the United States.
These were the so-called MJ-12 documents.
Their contents were explosive. According to the documents, the object that crashed at Roswell really had been a flying saucer carrying extraterrestrials, and the bodies of four aliens had been recovered. The documents also claimed that President Harry S. Truman assembled a team of 12 people to investigate the matter.
That secret committee, the story goes, was MJ-12, commonly known as Majestic Twelve.
According to the legend, MJ-12 remained at the forefront of alien research for the next 60 years. Even the familiar “Gray” alien is said, in this version of the story, to be connected to the results of MJ-12 research.
Area 51
Two years later, in 1989, a man named Bob Lazar appeared with another shocking claim.
Lazar said he had worked at an Air Force base called Area 51 and had been involved in UFO research. He further claimed that the craft he worked on was the same kind of disc connected to Roswell.
At the time, Area 51 was officially a base that did not exist.
Lazar also claimed that while at Area 51, he saw government documents stating that extraterrestrial life had already made contact with humans and with life forms on Earth. The testimony shook the United States, at least within UFO circles.
Of course, the truth of the story was unclear. Questions were raised about Lazar’s background, and many people treated his claims with skepticism.
Then, in 2013, the United States officially acknowledged the existence of Area 51.
It was also revealed that the Groom Lake facility associated with Area 51 had been used for work on the U-2, a cutting-edge high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft of its time. It also became known that stealth aircraft such as the F-117 had been developed there—machines whose unusual shapes had long led some people to suspect that UFO technology had been involved.
In other words, Area 51 was not simply a baseless fabrication. It was a real facility.
For travelers and curious horror fans: Area 51 and the Groom Lake site are restricted military areas. Do not attempt to enter, cross barriers, or approach guarded zones. View only from legal public areas and follow all posted rules.
From Suspicion Toward Belief
Naturally, there are many counterarguments to these stories. But believers argue that those objections address only part of the evidence and do not disprove everything.

なんと、この 小さな田舎町にUFOが墜落、それを米軍が極秘裏に回収した というのです。しかし直後、地元新聞の「 未確認飛行物体を米軍が回収 」という発表を米軍が即座に否定、気象観測用気球だったと発表します。ただ、このとき牧場に異常な残骸があったと地元紙は伝えており、米軍発表の信憑性は薄いと言わざるを得ません。。しかも、このロズウェルに墜落した未確認物体を空飛ぶ円盤であると最初にプレスリリースしたのは、 ロズウェル陸軍飛行場の中尉であった報道官 なのです。
しかし、当時、この事件は気象観測気球とした米軍発表とともに風化していきます。ただ、間違いなく米軍と宇宙人の関係性が始まったのはこの瞬間であると言え、研究者たちはこの 1947年を「UFO元年」として一つの記念すべき年である としているのです。発展期 エリア51とMJ12。ロズウェル事件からおよそ40年。宇宙人と米軍をめぐる歴史は、突如動き始めます。。・MJ12文章。。1987年のある日、アメリカのTV局に謎の人物から届けられた資料がアメリカの宇宙人の歴史に大きなインパクトを与えます。
そうそれこそがMJ12文章。。その内容はまさに衝撃の内容で、あのロズウェルに墜落した物体はやはり宇宙人の乗った円盤であり、4体の宇宙人の死体が回収されていたというものだったのです。そして、当時のトルーマン大統領がその解明チームとして集めた12人、それこそがMJ12、俗にマジュスティック・トゥエルブと呼ばれる極秘委員会だというのです。そして、それから60年に渡り、このMJ12が宇宙人研究の最先端を担ってきたとされています。。みなさんおなじみの宇宙人グレイも、MJ12の研究成果のひとつです。
。・エリア51。。そしてさらに2年後の1989年に、 ボブ・ラザーという物理学者が現れ衝撃の証言 をします。それが「自分はエリア51という空軍基地に勤務し、UFOの研究に携わっていた」というもので、しかもそれこそがロズウェルのあの円盤だというのです。しかも当時、この エリア51というのは存在しない空軍基地 だったのです。さらに、ボブ・ラザー氏はそのエリア51内において、すでに宇宙人（地球外生命体）が地球人や 地球上の生命体とコンタクトを取っているとした政府文章を見たと証言してアメリカを震撼 させます。
もちろん当時はその真偽の程は闇に包まれ、ボブ・ラザー氏の経歴にも疑問が生まれるなどして眉唾扱いする傾向も根強くありました。しかし、なんと2013年に、 アメリカ合衆国は公的にこのエリア51の存在を発表 したのです。。そのエリア51であるグルーム・レイク空軍基地は当時最先端であった高高度偵察機「U－2」が行われていたことも明らかになりました。それどころか、その形状からUFOの技術が転用されていると開発当初から疑われていた「F－117」などのステルス機の開発さえも行われていたこともわかったのです。
そうエリア51は信憑性のないでっちあげでもなんでもなく、実在する基地だったのです。疑念から確信へ時代は動いていく。。もちろん、この節には多くの反証があります。しかし、それは多く残されている事実のごく一部に対するもので、全てが否定されたわけではありません。というわけで次回は「隠しきれない真実 宇宙人と米軍の歴史2」です
