Nazi Germany’s human experiments were not carried out only by nameless camp staff. In many cases, they were proposed and directed by leading scientists, doctors, and military physicians of the time, with approval from high-ranking figures such as Heinrich Himmler and Adolf Hitler.
There is a saying that what goes around comes around. Among the brilliant but inhumane scientists who led these experiments, some were executed before the war ended, while others were condemned after the war in the Nuremberg trials. This article looks at several Nazi scientists whose names became tied to horrific experiments—and the dark endings that followed.
These stories involve real concentration camps and real victims. If you visit places such as Dachau or Auschwitz today, treat them as memorial sites, follow all rules, and approach them with respect.
Dr. Sigmund Rascher
Sigmund Rascher was one of the figures associated with atrocities at Dachau concentration camp, one of the earliest camps established by the Nazis.
Using his position as a captain and physician in the Luftwaffe, Rascher planned and led some of the most notorious human experiments, including low-pressure and oxygen-deprivation tests, as well as attempts to revive people from extreme hypothermia. At first, he was reportedly trusted by powerful officials, including Himmler.
It is said that more than 150 prisoners died from lack of oxygen, freezing, and related causes during Rascher’s experiments. His name remains infamous for these acts.
However, Rascher’s own end came inside Dachau. He and his wife had no children, and it was eventually discovered by Himmler that they had obtained other people’s children through kidnapping and paid trafficking, then raised them as their own. Rascher was executed in the same concentration camp where he had conducted his experiments.
Dr. August Hirt
Dr. August Hirt, a professor at the University of Strasbourg at the time, was another figure linked to Nazi human experimentation.
A specialist in anatomy and a member of the SS, Hirt carried out a grotesque project at Dachau: collecting the skulls of people the Nazi ideology marked for elimination, including Jews, communists, and Red Army political officers.
At Auschwitz, more than 100 prisoners were murdered by gas, and their bodies were used in anatomical research and human experimentation. After Nazi Germany’s defeat, Hirt’s life ended in suicide.
Dr. Josef Mengele
Josef Mengele is probably the most widely known Nazi doctor connected with Auschwitz, especially for his experiments on twins. That fame is not because of achievement, but because of the scale of his crimes.
Mengele is said to have carried out experiments on children, including attempts to create conjoined twins. According to accounts, most of the child subjects—sometimes described as numbering as many as 3,000 pairs—died. At Auschwitz, he was also feared for taking part in selections that sent prisoners either to the gas chambers or to human experiments.
His nickname among prisoners became the “Angel of Death.”
Mengele reportedly called his test subjects “guinea pigs,” and stories describe him humming classical music while moving from one experiment to the next. After the war, he escaped Allied capture and eventually fled to South America. He died in Brazil after suffering a heart attack while swimming in the ocean.
Even Simon Wiesenthal, famous for tracking down former Nazis, was never able to find Mengele. This infamous doctor has since appeared as a subject in several films and other works.
Dr. Viktor Brack
Viktor Brack, associated with the Reich public health apparatus, was involved in forced sterilization experiments—one of the most extreme expressions of Nazi racial ideology.
His experiments included forced infertility through radiation and the surgical removal of testicles from men. The details are almost too horrifying to imagine. After being sexually disabled, many victims were forced into labor, and numerous people who could no longer work were killed.
After the war, Brack attempted to defend himself in court, but he was sentenced to death.
The Ends of the Scientists Behind the Atrocities
As seen above, many of the scientists and doctors connected to these inhumane experiments met grim ends, including suicide and execution.
At the same time, there was also a country that absorbed Nazi Germany’s scientific and technical knowledge after the war: the United States. The operation that brought former Nazi specialists into American programs became known as Operation Paperclip.
In other words, even after the world condemned Nazi Germany as evil, parts of its scientific and technological system were folded into the postwar order. That darker side of postwar history is explored in related articles on the technology the victors wanted and the black science of Nazi Germany after the war.
