English Version

If you asked people around the world, “What is the most famous painting on Earth?” the answer would probably be the Mona Lisa.

It has been called the most recognized, most viewed, most written-about, most sung-about, and most parodied work of art in the world. Even if you have never seen the original in person, you have almost certainly encountered her somewhere: on TV, online, in print, or in one of countless homages and parody works.

But how can a painting this famous still have mysteries?

For fans of historical mysteries, that question is irresistible. And the biggest mystery may be the most basic one of all: who was the model for the Mona Lisa?

Here are the most famous theories about her identity, including the strongest candidate and five other names that continue to appear in discussions.

So, who was the Mona Lisa?

The most widely accepted theory is that the model was an Italian woman named Lisa del Giocondo.

The name “Mona” is often explained as a shortened form of the Italian “ma donna,” meaning “my lady.” In other words, Mona Lisa can be understood as “my lady Lisa.”

According to the leading theory, Lisa’s husband commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to paint his wife’s portrait. If so, the title itself reflects the husband’s point of view: “my lady, Lisa.”

Still, people who love mysteries have proposed many other possible identities for the woman in the painting. There are more than ten candidates in total, and many come with reasons that sound surprisingly plausible.

Below are five of the best-known alternatives.

Isabella d’Este

Isabella d’Este was one of the leading cultural and political figures of the Renaissance, the same era in which Leonardo da Vinci lived.

Known as a great lover of the arts, Isabella asked Leonardo, who was already an extremely popular artist, to paint her portrait. Because of this connection, some have suggested that Isabella d’Este may have been the model for the Mona Lisa.

In reality, however, the only work Leonardo is known to have made for her is a single drawing.

Leonardo was famously slow to finish projects, and when he was not interested in something, he tended not to touch it at all. Aside from that drawing, there is no completed portrait of Isabella by Leonardo. She is said to have patiently asked him again and again to finish the portrait, but Leonardo kept ignoring the requests.

Even toward one of Italy’s most important nobles, Leonardo could be remarkably difficult. In a way, that is very Leonardo.

Giuliano de’ Medici’s lover

Another important figure in Italian history is Giuliano di Lorenzo de’ Medici, ruler of Florence and a friend of Leonardo da Vinci.

He was a major figure in Italy, a cultured man who loved art more than politics, and someone with a close connection to Leonardo. Because of that, one theory claims that the Mona Lisa was commissioned by Giuliano de’ Medici for his lover.

This idea attracted attention for a time, but today the Lisa del Giocondo theory is generally considered stronger. As a result, the Medici lover theory is not as widely supported as it once was.

Caterina Sforza

Caterina Sforza, one of the most powerful women of her age, has also been suggested as a possible model for the Mona Lisa.

She was the ruler of Forlì in Italy’s Romagna region and is remembered as a symbolic figure from the final period of Forlì’s independence.

Leonardo is believed to have begun working on the Mona Lisa around 1503 to 1504. This overlaps with the period when Caterina married a cousin of the Medici family. Because she was a prominent woman of the era and may have had a connection that brought her into Leonardo’s circle, her name has been linked to the painting.

Leonardo da Vinci’s mother

Another theory is more emotional: the Mona Lisa may have been inspired by Leonardo’s own mother.

Leonardo lived with his mother until he was about five years old. After that, his father remarried, and Leonardo was raised with a stepmother, who also died when he was around sixteen.

Because of this, some believe Leonardo did not truly know his biological mother or experience lasting maternal affection, and that he longed for it throughout his life. According to this interpretation, the Mona Lisa was the result of his feelings for a mother whose face he may not even have remembered clearly.

Leonardo da Vinci himself

Leonardo is often imagined today as a stern old genius, but historical descriptions suggest he was handsome, witty, humorous, and widely admired. In other words, he may have been exactly the kind of person who would make an ideal portrait model.

Because of this, some have suggested that Leonardo used himself as a model when painting his ideal woman.

It may sound strange at first, but in the strange world of the Mona Lisa, even this theory has a certain fascination.

The mystery is part of the fun

The strongest candidate for the model of the Mona Lisa is still Lisa del Giocondo.

Other theories have named Isabella d’Este, Giuliano de’ Medici’s lover, Caterina Sforza, Leonardo’s mother, Leonardo himself, and many others.

Of course, if someone simply declares, “The Mona Lisa was definitely Lisa del Giocondo,” then one more historical mystery seems to vanish. For mystery lovers, that can feel a little disappointing.

Sometimes the most enjoyable part of history is leaving a question partly unanswered and imagining the possibilities.

Which theory you believe is up to you.
