English Version

Leonardo da Vinci’s manuscripts are, in simple terms, the notes he left behind.

Da Vinci was what we might call an obsessive note-taker. In his time, there were no smartphones, so he could not instantly post a thought the moment it crossed his mind. Instead, he wrote things down: observations of people, observations of nature, ideas, flashes of inspiration, and whatever he happened to feel in the moment.

When people hear “note-taking,” it may sound like something from a self-help book. But masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper were born from Da Vinci’s daily observations of human beings and his constant sketching.

Because he recorded everything that caught his attention, some of the most famous works of art in the world became possible. There may really be a strange power in notes—the power to produce ideas that change the world. Da Vinci was not just a note-taker. He was a master of manuscripts.

What Was Written in Da Vinci’s Manuscripts?

Da Vinci is said to have continued writing manuscripts for about 40 years. In total, they are believed to have reached around 15,000 pages.

Only about one-third of them survive today: roughly 5,000 pages.

Those pages contain an astonishing range of subjects, including drawing, mathematics, geometry, astronomy, anatomy, botany, zoology, civil engineering, and military technology. It almost feels as if every field of knowledge in the world passed through Da Vinci’s curiosity at some point.

Among them are ideas far ahead of their time, such as tanks, helicopters, and studies of a fetus in the womb. There are also sketches that can feel a little unsettling or strangely intense to modern eyes.

It is exciting to imagine how the world might be different if the lost two-thirds of his manuscripts still existed. At the same time, some of his notes were apparently as ordinary as a casual social media post—something like “the coffee was good.” That small detail makes him feel even more like a true note addict: he really wrote down everything.

The Manuscripts Were Divided Into 10 Major Groups

During his life, Da Vinci reportedly tried several times to organize his notes systematically. But the number of pages was simply too enormous, and he was never able to fully sort them by subject while he was alive.

After Da Vinci’s death, all of the manuscripts were inherited by his pupil Francesco Melzi. Over time, they were compiled in various ways and are now generally divided into 10 major groups.

Here are four of the best-known examples.

Codex Atlanticus

Estimated period: 1478–1518 Collection: Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan Main contents: Drawing, mathematics, geometry, astronomy, botany, zoology, civil engineering, military technology

Da Vinci was around 30 years old when he began the notes that became the Codex Atlanticus. The range of his interests is overwhelming, and so is the precision of his drawings.

Paris Manuscripts

Estimated period: 1487–1515 Collection: Institut de France, Paris Main contents: Military technology, optics, hydraulics, geometry, and studies, reflections, and drawings related to the flight of birds

The famous “helicopter,” or a machine designed to carry a human through the air, appears in these manuscripts.

Because these were ideas left by Da Vinci, it is tempting to imagine that they were all possible. But many were simply his own concepts, and not every invention could actually have been built or flown.

Codex Leicester

Estimated period: 1506–1510 Collection: Private collection, owned by Bill Gates Main contents: Hydraulics and astronomy

The most famous Da Vinci manuscript in private hands is the Codex Leicester, now owned by Bill Gates.

At an auction on November 11, 1994, it sold for $30,802,500—about 570 million yen in 2019 prices—making it the second most expensive book ever sold.

Its contents include forward-looking ideas such as reflections on plate tectonics, studies of the movement of water, and explanations of the brightness of the Moon and earthshine. Still, it is hard not to be distracted by the sale price, which is several times the lifetime earnings of an average office worker.

Codex on the Flight of Birds

Estimated period: 1505 Collection: Royal Library of Turin Main contents: Studies and reflections on the flight of birds

Why can birds fly? How much air resistance do they face? Do they ride the wind and air currents?

This manuscript focuses on the flight of birds, using Da Vinci’s extraordinary powers of observation. The ancient human dream of flying was something Da Vinci tried to approach by watching birds closely.

To Understand Da Vinci, Start With the Manuscripts

In addition to the four above, other important groups include the Windsor Manuscripts, Arundel Manuscript, Forster Manuscripts, Madrid Codices, Ashburnham Manuscripts, and Trivulzian Codex. Each contains material that is essential for understanding Da Vinci.

When people think of Leonardo da Vinci, they often think first of paintings like the Mona Lisa. But the manuscripts reveal something different: his raw thoughts, his interests at the time, and even the surprisingly human side of a man remembered as a genius.

To Da Vinci, they may have been “just notes.” To the rest of us, they are valuable works in their own right.

If you are interested in Da Vinci, try beginning not with his finished masterpieces, but with his manuscripts. They offer a fascinating and rare glimpse into the private mind of one of history’s greatest geniuses.
