In Kingdom, flashbacks sometimes look back on King Zhaoxiang of Qin and the Six Great Generals who served under him. In terms of popularity, many fans would probably choose General Ouki, famous for his unforgettable laugh. But in historical tradition, the strongest of the great commanders who supported King Zhaoxiang is often said to have been Bai Qi.
Ancient Chinese warriors and generals are often surrounded by stories of brutality, but Bai Qi stands apart. In Kingdom, his actions are used as one reason the people of Zhao hold such deep hatred toward Qin. Historically, that hatred is not hard to understand.
A General Said to Have Killed Like No Other
No other general of his era is said to have killed as many enemy soldiers as Bai Qi.
Bai Qi’s life has been remembered as that of a brilliant but merciless commander: a man respected and feared both inside and outside Qin because he was simply too strong in war. Records such as the Records of the Grand Historian come from a very distant age, and Kingdom naturally adds a great deal of dramatization. Even so, the surviving accounts connected to Bai Qi describe the killing of nearly one million enemy soldiers, surrendered troops, and prisoners.
In modern China, population growth has created many kinds of problems. In ancient China, however, population decline could threaten the operation of an entire state. Fewer people available for war also meant fewer farmers. Food shortages caused by poor harvests made the lives of farming soldiers unstable and dangerous.
A later solution often associated with Cao Cao, who would become the ruler of Wei in the Three Kingdoms period, was the tuntian system of state-run agricultural colonies. But in the generations before the First Emperor of Qin, such measures had not yet been put in place.
So what exactly did Bai Qi do in war? The major episodes are usually told in the following order.
The Battle of Yique: 240,000 Beheaded, Tens of Thousands Buried Alive
The first battle in which Bai Qi is said to have killed vast numbers of enemy troops was the Battle of Yique, recorded in the Records of the Grand Historian in the biographies of Bai Qi and Wang Jian.
This battle took place during the reign of King Zhaoxiang of Qin, before the age of the First Emperor. Qin fought against the states of Han and Wei. In this war, Bai Qi is said to have beheaded 240,000 enemy soldiers and buried alive tens of thousands of prisoners.
After stepping onto the main stage of history, Bai Qi immediately appears in the records as a man responsible for the execution of at least 250,000 people. And this was only the beginning.
The Battle of Huayang: 130,000 Beheaded
The Battle of Huayang occurred around 273–275 BCE, again against Wei. Bai Qi had already been active in campaigns against Chu and Wei before this, but at Huayang he is said to have beheaded 130,000 men.
It may be possible that Bai Qi chose these measures depending on time and circumstance. Even so, no other commander of that era is remembered as having carried out punishment on such a scale. In that sense, Bai Qi was unique.
The following year, when he fought a Zhao general, he is also said to have drowned as many as 20,000 soldiers in the Yellow River.
Xingcheng: 50,000 Beheaded
In 265–264 BCE, Bai Qi again fought Han. During the attack on Xingcheng, he is said to have killed and beheaded 50,000 people.
And then came the event that made his name especially terrifying.
The Battle of Changping: Surrendered Soldiers Buried Alive
Around 260 BCE, Bai Qi fought in the Battle of Changping, an event also shown in flashback in Kingdom. After using starvation tactics, Bai Qi is said to have buried alive an enormous number of surrendered Zhao soldiers.
The number varies depending on the account. Some traditions say 450,000 men were buried alive, while other estimates range from 200,000 to 450,000. It is also said that only 240 boy soldiers were spared.
Bai Qi is often said to have killed more people in war than even Xiang Yu. For that reason, he is remembered as one of the harshest and most brutal generals in ancient Chinese history.
The End of Bai Qi, the Massacre King
Despite his terrifying record, Bai Qi’s final moments are often described in a surprisingly human way.
Bai Qi had been the leading military figure supporting King Zhaoxiang of Qin. But Fan Ju, the Qin chancellor at the time, began to see him as dangerous. In the end, King Zhaoxiang ordered Bai Qi to take his own life.
Bai Qi had won too much. He was not brought down by an enemy state, but by a minister of Qin—the very country he had served.
At first, Bai Qi reportedly could not accept the death sentence. According to one account, however, he eventually realized that after burying more than 400,000 people alive at Changping, he was no longer a man who deserved to live.
