Cape Chikyu in Muroran, Hokkaido, is known as a dramatic coastal viewpoint, but it also has a darker reputation among ghost-story fans.
According to local rumors, the sound of a bell can be heard there late at night. Some say that anyone who hears it may become possessed by the spirit of the dead. Others claim that ghostly images can appear in photos taken near the bell.
One story connected to the cape tells of a couple who once attempted suicide by jumping from the cliffs together. As the rumor goes, the man died instantly, but the woman became caught in a tree. Still alive, she was said to have been attacked by crows and died while screaming. The tale also claims that her body was not found right away and remained exposed for about a month.
These accounts are rumors and local ghost stories rather than confirmed history, but they have helped give Cape Chikyu an eerie reputation after dark.
