English Version

To understand the Japan-Jewish common ancestry theory, one piece of background is impossible to ignore: the origins and history of ancient Israel, and the mystery of the Lost Ten Tribes.

This is important because the theory, often treated as an urban legend or occult historical rumor, broadly suggests that some ancient Israelite tribes may have separated from Israel and eventually reached Japan. In other words, to understand why anyone would claim that Jewish people might have come to Japan in ancient times, we first need to look at the history of ancient Israel.

The words “Jewish” and “ancient Israelite” are often used together, but strictly speaking, “Jewish” later came to refer to one branch of the ancient Israelites. Not every ancient Israelite was originally called Jewish.

As the name “Lost Ten Tribes” suggests, some ancient Israelites seem to have disappeared from the historical record. The mystery of the Lost Ten Tribes is still often described as one of the great unsolved mysteries of world history. This first part will introduce the path followed by ancient Israel and the Jewish people. Since this background is essential to the Japan-Jewish common ancestry theory, we will cover it in two parts.

A Brief History of Ancient Israel

Many figures connected to ancient Israel appear in the Old Testament, but covering everything would mean summarizing nearly 4,000 years of history. Here, we will focus only on the key points.

The names used for these people also change depending on the period: Hebrews, Israelites, Jewish people, and so on. To make things clearer, here is a rough overview.

  • Hebrews: A name associated with Abram, later Abraham, around 2000 BCE, when he moved toward Egypt.
  • Israelites: A collective people made up of the twelve tribes descended from the Hebrews.
  • Jewish people: A later name associated especially with the tribe of Judah, one of the twelve tribes.

Abraham later had two sons, Ishmael and Isaac. Ishmael is traditionally called the father of the Arab peoples. Isaac then had twin sons, Esau and Jacob.

Jacob, the grandson of Abraham, was later renamed “Israel” and became known as the father of all the Israelites. According to the Old Testament, Jacob’s new name was given by divine command.

The Israelites and the Twelve Tribes

After Jacob became the father of the Israelites, he took four wives and had twelve sons. After Jacob’s death, each of these sons led his own family line, and they became the heads of the Twelve Tribes of Israel.

There are several ways to count the Twelve Tribes. One common view is that the tribe of Levi is not counted as an ordinary tribe because it held priestly duties. Instead, the two sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, are each counted as tribes, bringing the total to twelve.

According to the Old Testament, Joseph, Jacob’s eleventh son, suffered a terrible betrayal when his brothers sold him into Egypt. Later, a major famine struck the world, and the Israelites, including Jacob, fled to Egypt with all their possessions.

There, they found Joseph, who had risen to become a high official, second only to the Pharaoh. Joseph forgave his brothers, and the Israelites began to prosper in Egypt.

After Joseph: The Israelites Become Slaves

At first, the Israelites flourished in Egypt under Joseph’s protection. But after Joseph’s death and the expulsion of the Hyksos, the Israelites had become powerful enough that the Pharaoh feared them. Their status quickly collapsed, and they were forced into slavery.

This marked the beginning of a long period of hardship. According to tradition, in 1290 BCE, the prophet Moses, chosen by God, led the Israelites in an attempt to escape from Egypt.

Moses, the Exodus, and the Kingdom of Israel

Just as Jacob was said to have been named the father of the Israelites by divine command, Moses was, in a sense, seen as a savior figure for the Israelite people.

Moses, who appears in the Old Testament, led all the Israelites out of Egypt. Together, they wandered as a people without a settled home.

During this time, God is said to have given Moses sacred objects as proof of the covenant between God and the Israelites: the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, the jar of manna, and Aaron’s rod. These were placed inside the Ark of the Covenant, often simply called the Ark.

The Ark and these sacred objects are sometimes mentioned as part of the supposed evidence used in the Japan-Jewish common ancestry theory, so they are worth remembering.

With this covenant, the Israelites became the people chosen by God, and the earliest form of Judaism, ancient Hebrew religion, was established.

After Moses, Joshua led the Twelve Tribes across the Jordan River. They conquered Canaan, the Promised Land, and the Kingdom of Israel was founded.

In this framework, the founding of Israel meant that the homeland of the Twelve Tribes became the region now known as Palestine.
