The Old Toyohama Tunnel in Furubira, Hokkaido, is said to be haunted by the spirit of a woman and by the ghost of someone who died by self-immolation.
The tunnel was closed in 1984 when the New Toyohama Tunnel opened. Later, an accident occurred in the new tunnel when falling rock struck a bus that was passing through. For three days, until the rock face could be blasted open, the driver and passengers remained buried inside.
During that period, the Old Toyohama Tunnel was reportedly reopened temporarily.
The area already had a reputation for supernatural rumors even before the accident. People had long said that a woman’s ghost appeared here. There are also stories of a cave-like space inside the tunnel where someone is said to have set themselves on fire and died.
Another rumor connects the strange phenomena to a nearby Ainu grave, with some claiming the hauntings are the result of an Ainu curse. Whether that is folklore, local fear, or something else is impossible to say.
The site is associated with the Raiden National Highway area of Furubira Town, Furubira District, Hokkaido. If you visit the area, do not enter closed tunnels or restricted zones. Check current road conditions, obey all signs and barriers, and view any historic or haunted sites only from safe, legal public areas.

女性の霊や焼身自殺者の霊が出ると言われている。1984年に新豊浜トンネルが開通されて旧豊浜トンネルは閉鎖された。その後、新豊浜トンネルで岩盤崩落事故により通行中だったバスが巻き込まれる事故が発生した。岩盤を爆破するまでの3日間、運転手と乗客が生き埋めになったままだった。そのあいだ一時的に旧豊浜トンネルが開通していた。もともとこのあたりでは心霊的な噂があり事故が起きる前から女性の霊が出ると言われていた。またトンネル内には洞窟のような空間がありそこで焼身自殺をした人もいると言われている。
