Noma Tunnel sits near Noma Pass, a place often described by locals as one of the most frightening haunted spots in Kansai. It is well known among people in the region, and many ghost stories and unsettling experiences have been reported there.
The area’s darkest reputation centers on a place in the mountains called Shiokiba, an old execution ground near Noma Pass. According to local rumor, the spirits connected to Shiokiba are said to affect Noma Tunnel as well. What Are Noma Pass and Noma Tunnel?
Noma Pass is a mountain pass in the Noma area of Nose, Toyono District, Osaka Prefecture. It is part of the Hokusetsu area and provides access toward Mount Myoken in Nose.
The road is said to be narrow despite having two lanes, with a series of sharp hairpin curves. Noma Tunnel cuts through Noma Pass, and both the pass and the tunnel have become famous for reported paranormal phenomena.
If you visit the area, treat it as a mountain road first and a haunted location second. Drive carefully, avoid stopping in dangerous places, do not enter private or restricted land, and be respectful around memorials and religious sites.
Noma Pass and the Shiokiba Execution Ground
Deep in the mountains around Noma Pass, there is said to be the remains of an execution ground dating back to the Sengoku period. This place is known as Shiokiba, and it is said that beheadings were once carried out there.
Part of the old execution site is believed to still remain on Noma Pass. Shiokiba is located in the mountains, and after passing the tunnel, it is said to be reachable only on foot.
The entrance to Shiokiba is marked by a torii gate. After passing through it, visitors are said to come upon a small hut. The area around that hut is believed to be the former execution ground. Nearby, a memorial monument stands to pacify the spirits of the dead.
There is also a river near Shiokiba known in local lore as the “Neck-Washing River.” According to the legend, severed heads were washed in this river before being displayed, then left there until they decayed.
Hauntings Reported at Noma Tunnel
To reach the old execution ground at Noma Pass, people pass through Noma Tunnel. Many of the ghost stories are said to happen either while entering the tunnel or while traveling through it.

The History Behind Shiokiba
Shiokiba is said to have a deep and troubling history.
Long ago, two villages became locked in a conflict. The fighting reportedly continued for a long time and caused many deaths. According to the story, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, unable to ignore the situation, ordered both sides to stop fighting on one condition: each village would choose representatives, said to be five people in some versions and ten in others, and they would be exchanged and executed.
After that, the representatives from each village were reportedly handed over and put to death. This event is said to be the origin of Shiokiba, and a memorial from that time is said to remain there even today.
From the late Edo period into the Taisho era, the site is also said to have functioned as an actual execution ground for criminals. Executions there were reportedly carried out by beheading or crucifixion.
Why Noma Tunnel Became So Feared
In the mountains around Noma Pass and inside Noma Tunnel, there have been many stories of headless samurai, floating heads, and other disturbing apparitions. The main source of these ghost stories is believed to be the nearby Shiokiba execution ground.
Because of this connection, Noma Pass and Noma Tunnel are famous among locals as some of Kansai’s most frightening haunted places. Some even say the area’s reputation is so strong that taxi drivers avoid passing through it.

。野間峠。野間峠の山奥には戦国時代に作られた処刑場（しおき場）があり、その場所では打ち首がよく行われていたそうです。その 処刑場（しおき場）の一部がいまだにこの野間峠に残っている のです。「しおき場」は 山奥にあり、トンネルを過ぎたあたりからは徒歩でしか向かうことができません。。しおき場への入り口は鳥居で、そこをくぐると小さな小屋が見えてくると思います。その小屋がある場所こそ「しおき場」で処刑場の跡地なのです。近くには霊を沈めるための慰霊碑が建てられています。
