English Version
Spontaneous human combustion, often shortened to SHC, refers to the terrifying phenomenon in which a person’s body is said to suddenly burst into flames with no obvious source of fire nearby. Reports of this strange and unsettling event have appeared in many parts of the world.
The mystery is that, according to these accounts, the fire begins without warning. In some SHC lore, the heat is described as being even higher than that of a cremation furnace, which usually reaches around 970 to 1,300 degrees Celsius. In the most extreme stories, a body is said to be reduced to ash in less than five minutes.
What makes these cases so disturbing is not just the burning itself, but the surroundings. In many reports, investigators could not find anything nearby that should have started a fire. The victim’s body burned, yet the entire house or room did not burn down.
Records of this phenomenon are said to go back as far as 1641. Including more recent reports, there are said to be more than 200 cases worldwide.
Common Features in Reported Cases
Many reported SHC cases share several details:
- The source of the fire is unknown.
- Only the victim burned, while the home did not completely burn down.
- The torso was often burned so severely that even bones turned to ash, while the feet tended to remain.
Cases of Spontaneous Human Combustion
The Vietnamese Girl Whose Hair Caught Fire
Among the many stories of spontaneous human combustion, one unusual case involved a 15-year-old girl in Vietnam. In most reports, clothing is said to ignite first. In this case, however, the fire reportedly began in her hair.
While she was in class at school, she heard a hissing sound and realized that her hair had caught fire. Even stranger, the same phenomenon reportedly happened for three days in a row.
According to the account, the girl did not feel pain or heat at the time. However, immediately after the ignition, she experienced an intense headache. Investigations continued, but the true cause was never clearly identified.
The Case of Mary Reeser
One famous case took place on July 1, 1951, in an apartment in Florida, USA.
The victim was Mary Reeser. According to the story, her son Richard visited her apartment and found that she had burned to death, leaving only her feet still wearing slippers.
The day before, he had visited his mother and said she had been reading. Later, during a phone call, she reportedly told him she was going to take four sleeping pills.
The Case of Alfred Ashton
Another well-known case occurred on January 8, 1988, in Southampton, in southern England.
The victim, Alfred Ashton, was found burned to death, while the lower half of his body remained clearly visible. The room had reportedly become extremely hot, but no obvious source of ignition was found nearby.
The Case of Michael Faherty
On December 22, 2010, in Galway in western Ireland, 76-year-old Michael Faherty was found burned to death in the living room of his home.
He was already dead when discovered, but there were reportedly no clear burn marks in the surrounding area. The coroner is said to have ruled his cause of death as spontaneous human combustion.
Main Theories
Several theories have been suggested to explain spontaneous human combustion, though none fully solves the mystery.
Alcohol Consumption
One theory claims that heavy drinking could leave enough alcohol in the body to cause ignition. However, this explanation is often rejected today because some reported victims were not drinkers.
Phosphorus
Another theory suggests that phosphorus, a substance that burns intensely in air, might ignite inside the body. This idea is also considered unlikely, since it is difficult to imagine phosphorus burning within the human body in that way.
Plasma
Some have suggested that plasma may somehow transfer to a person by chance and cause ignition. This theory may have developed because plasma-related phenomena are said to occur often in Britain, and many SHC stories have been reported there.
The Human Candle, or Wick Effect
The “human candle” theory suggests that a body can burn in a way similar to a candle, with body fat acting like wax and clothing acting like a wick. However, this theory does not explain what started the fire in the first place.
Electrical Charge in the Body
Another idea is that a certain voltage builds up inside the body, creates intense heat, and somehow causes ignition. This remains only a theory.
Final Thoughts
It sounds almost impossible: a person suddenly catching fire with no warning. Yet reports of spontaneous human combustion have appeared around the world for centuries.
The greatest mystery is that, even now, the exact cause of these fires has not been definitively explained. That uncertainty is what keeps SHC one of the strangest and most unsettling phenomena in paranormal history.
