English Version

Have you heard of hitori kakurenbo? Horror fans may already know the name. It is a Japanese urban legend often translated as “one-person hide-and-seek,” and it has a reputation as one of the more dangerous occult games shared online.

According to the legend, people who try it often report strange phenomena. It is absolutely not something we recommend attempting. There have even been horror films based on hitori kakurenbo, and if you are curious but do not want to take the risk, watching one of those movies is a much safer choice.

What is hitori kakurenbo?

Hitori kakurenbo is exactly what the name suggests: hide-and-seek played alone. But in folklore and internet horror circles, it is treated less like a game and more like a spirit-summoning ritual.

Some people say it can be even more dangerous than Kokkuri-san, Japan’s Ouija-like divination game. One reason is that hitori kakurenbo is sometimes described as a way of placing a curse on yourself.

The ritual is said to use ordinary household items: a stuffed animal with arms and legs, rice, your own fingernail clippings, a cutter or knife, sewing tools with red thread, salt water, and salt. Natural salt is often recommended in versions of the legend.

The stuffed animal is usually given a name. In the story, its stomach is opened, the stuffing is removed, and rice and fingernails are placed inside before it is sewn shut with red thread. The red thread is said to represent blood vessels or blood, while the rice is said to represent internal organs. Salt water is placed in the hiding spot, such as a closet.

At 3:00 a.m., the legend says the “game” begins. The person tells the doll that it is “it,” takes it to the bathroom, places it in the bathtub, turns off the lights except for the television, counts with their eyes closed, and then “finds” the doll before hiding. While hiding, various supernatural phenomena are said to occur.

This is not presented as a guide. The story involves knives, darkness, fear, and unsafe behavior, and it should not be attempted.

How the legend says it must end

Hitori kakurenbo is also known for having a required ending. In common versions, the person must take salt water into their mouth, return to the doll, pour the remaining salt water over it, and declare victory.

The doll used in the ritual is sometimes said to be burned afterward, though handling fire is dangerous and should not be done casually. The legend also warns that the ritual must be ended within one or two hours.

What people claim happens

Although hitori kakurenbo sounds like something that could be done with items found at home, it is treated in the legend as a form of spirit summoning. There are many online stories from people who claim that strange things happened after they tried it.

In one widely shared type of account, people livestream or post updates on social media while hiding in a closet. They claim the television suddenly turns off, that something looks into the closet, or that the stuffed animal that should have been left in the bathroom has somehow moved.

A moving doll may sound like a simple horror trope, but in the logic of the legend, it creates a serious problem: if you cannot find the doll, you cannot properly end the ritual. And even leaving the hiding place to return to the bathroom is said to be dangerous, because unexplained phenomena may occur on the way.

In other words, the legend’s fear is not only that something strange might happen. It is that starting hitori kakurenbo is easy, while ending it may become difficult.

The salt water placed in the hiding spot is often described as a kind of protective barrier. But the stories warn that if something especially powerful appears, salt water may not be enough.

Some versions also say the ritual becomes more dangerous if fingernails are replaced or combined with blood, animal flesh, hair, or other bodily materials. The article’s warning is clear: do not do this.

When you consider the symbolism—the red thread as blood vessels, the rice as organs, and part of your own body placed inside the doll—it becomes easier to understand why hitori kakurenbo is described as a spirit ritual that turns the curse back toward the person performing it.

Final thoughts

Hitori kakurenbo is often described as more dangerous than Kokkuri-san. In the stories, if the ritual cannot be ended properly, the consequences may be severe.

Whether you see it as folklore, internet horror, or an occult urban legend, it is not something to try out of curiosity. If you are interested in the atmosphere of hitori kakurenbo, the safer option is simple: watch a horror movie inspired by it instead.
