Italy is often jokingly described as a country relaxed about punctuality. But in 2011, on the island of Sicily, something strange happened: digital clocks reportedly began running 15 minutes fast all at once.
People in different places said they were arriving at work early by accident. In a place where being a little late was treated as normal, the sudden disappearance of lateness felt almost uncanny.
A Strange Discovery in Sicily
Francesco Nicosia, an electrical engineer living in Sicily, was one of the first people to notice the oddity.
He was leaving for work at his usual time, yet somehow he kept arriving early. At first, he thought one clock in his home might be broken. But when he checked, he found that every digital clock in the house was running 15 to 20 minutes fast.
He wondered if it was a prank. Then people at his workplace began reporting the same thing. Before long, no one seemed to be late anymore.
Curious whether the phenomenon was limited to their office, Nicosia and another electrical engineer, Andrea De Luca, asked online for similar reports. According to the story, responses came in from across the island: digital clocks were going wrong in many different places.
The Leading Theory
As the rumor spread, people in Sicily discussed all kinds of explanations, from ghosts to increased volcanic activity. For a while, it reportedly caused a small panic.
Emanuele Dilettoso, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Catania, offered a more down-to-earth hypothesis. He suggested that generators connected to the power grid, such as solar power systems with larger voltage fluctuations, might have been subtly affecting the electrical frequency.
The idea was introduced on local television: if unstable-frequency current flowed from wall outlets into digital clocks, it could throw off their timekeeping and make them run fast.
Was It Really a Time Warp?
In the end, no completely definitive answer was given. The explanation involving the electrical grid and frequency changes is often treated as the most plausible theory.
Notably, only digital clocks were said to have been affected at the time. Analog clocks reportedly showed no strange behavior.
A Similar “Time Slip” Story from Japan
There is also a Japanese story that feels strangely similar, though it is more like an urban legend than a verified incident.
A couple had arranged to meet in front of a clock tower near a station. The man arrived and waited, but his girlfriend, who was usually punctual, did not appear. He called her.
She said, “I’m already here. Are you going to be late?”
He replied, “I’m here too.”
At first, he thought she was teasing him. It was Halloween season, and many people in costume were gathered around the area. To prove he was really there, he said, “I’m serious. Goku, Majin Buu, and Frieza just walked right in front of me.”
She answered, “Those same people just walked past me too.”
Feeling that something was wrong, they decided to take photos and send them to each other on LINE. The photos showed exactly the same scenery.
They tried moving to other spots, but that day, they were never able to meet. According to the story, they finally saw each other the next day. Was it a distortion in time and space that kept them apart? Or something else entirely?
Final Thoughts
A time shift happening across one island is a very unusual story, and it is easy to see why people connected it to ideas like spacetime distortion or even Einstein’s theory of relativity.
Still, the Sicily case may have had a technical explanation. In Japan, many digital clocks are battery-powered, while some accounts suggest that the affected clocks in Italy may have been powered through wall outlets. If so, Professor Dilettoso’s frequency hypothesis cannot be completely dismissed.
Whatever the cause, the strangest result may be the most practical one: thanks to the mysterious clock problem, lateness in that part of Italy reportedly dropped dramatically.

遅刻が当たり前の国イタリア・。2011 年に 定時になっても仕事場に訪れないのは日常のシチリア島である事件 が起こりました。デジタル式の時計が一斉に 15 分早く進むという謎の現象が発生 しました。各所で 「仕事に早くついてしまった」 という被害が発生したそうです。時空の歪みが起こったイタリア 。遅刻が当たり前のイタリアでおかしなことが起きたのです。イタリア・シチリア島に住む電気技師のフランチェスコ・ニコシアはある奇妙なことに気づいたのです。
いつもの時間に出勤しているはずなのに、職場に早くついてしまった。このようなことが続いたのです。時計が故障しているのかと思い調べてみると、 なぜか家中のすべてのデジタル時計が 15 ～ 20 分早く進んでいることが判明 しました。誰かのいたずらだと思ったが、同じ職場の人たちにも同じ現象が起こり始め、誰も遅刻しなくなったのです。この現象は自分たちだけなのかと思い、もう一人の電気技師アンドレア・デ・ルカと一緒にネットで事例について募集したところ、島中のいたるところでデジタル時計が狂っていることが判明したのです。
有力説 。島では幽霊の仕業説から火山活動の活発化説まであらゆる可能性が論じられちょっとしたパニック状態になっていました。カタニア大学の電気工学科の教授エマニュエル・ディレトーソは。「電力網に接続されている発電機のうち、例えば電圧の変動が大きい太陽電池のようなものが周波数に微妙な影響を与えている可能性がある」 。このような仮説を出しました。周波数が安定しない電流がコンセントから時計に流れると時計の進みがくるってしまうという仮説を地元のテレビ局で紹介しました。
時空の歪みの真相は？。結局はっきりとしたことはわかっていません。先ほどカタニア大学の電気工学科の教授エマニュエル・ディレトーソが語ったことが一番の有力説といわれています。当時狂ったのはデジタル時計だけでアナログ時計には何の影響も受けていなかったそうです。日本でも起きていた時空の歪み 。とあるカップルがデートの待ち合わせをしているときの話です。駅前の時計台の前で待ち合わせをしていました。いつも時間通りにやってくるはずの彼女がこの日に限って時間通りに現れなかったため、男性は彼女に電話をかけることにしました。
彼女：「もう着いているけど、おくれる？」。と彼女が言い出したのです。男性：「俺ももうついているよ」。男性ははじめ彼女にからかわれていると思ったそうです。ハロウィンシーズンだったため仮想した人たちがたくさん集まっていました。男性：「本当だよ。目の前に悟空と魔人ブウとフリーザが通ったよ」。彼女：「その人たち、私の目の前も通った」。これはおかしいと思い、お互いに写真を撮って LINE で送りあうことにしたのです。届いた写真には全く同じ風景が写っていたのです。
奇妙に感じてほかの場所に移ったりしてみましたがその日は結局会うことができなかったのです。翌日になり、やっと会うことができたそうです。この時二人は時空の歪みによって会えなかった とでもいうのでしょうか？。まとめ 。いかがだったでしょうか？。このように時間のずれが島限定で起きるなんてとても珍しい話ですね。アインシュタインの相対性理論的な話でとても面白いと思いました。日本では電池式のデジタル時計が使用されていますが、イタリアではおそらくコンセント式が使用されていると書かれていたためエマニュエル・ディレトーソが立てた仮説も完全に否定できませんね。
この事件のおかげでイタリアでは遅刻者が激減したそうです
